The conception of substitution of the equals sign plays a unique role in students' algebra performance

Students’ conceptions of the equals sign are related to algebraic success. Research has identified two common conceptions held by children: operational and relational. The latter has been widely operationalised in terms of the sameness of the values on each side of the equals sign, but Jones, Inglis, Gilmore and Dowens (2012) argued that the substitution component of relational equivalence should also be operationalised. In this study, we investigated whether students’ endorsement of the substitution definition of the equals sign is a unique predictor of their algebra performance independent of the other two definitions (operational and sameness). Secondary school students were asked to rate the ‘cleverness’ of operational, sameness, and substitution definitions of the equals sign and completed an algebra test. Our findings demonstrate that endorsement of substitution plays a unique role in explaining secondary school students’ algebra performance above and beyond school year and the other definitions. These findings contribute new insights into how students’ algebra learning relates to their conceptions of the equals sign

Socio-demographic factors and network configuration among MENA entrepreneurs

    – The field of entrepreneurship has seen a dramatic increase in studies focusing on networks and relations. Research in this area has thus far focused on how the structure and quality of entrepreneurs\u27 existing interpersonal ties shape information access and thereby influence entrepreneurial outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to extend the focus further by examining how the entrepreneur\u27s socio-demographic profile affects advisory network configuration in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) context. – In this paper, the authors used Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) data, at the individual level (total early-stage entrepreneurial activities) in 14 countries within the MENA region over the course of three years (2009, 2010 and 2011). The sample of networks is obtained from the entrepreneurs identified among the adults interviewed in the adult population survey of GEM participating countries from the MENA region. – Strong evidence was found that socio-demographic variables such as gender, age, income and education have an impact on the usage of advice-seeking networks by entrepreneurs across MENA. For instance, the findings suggest that women entrepreneurs in the MENA region tend to rely more on personal networks compared to male entrepreneurs. – The paper\u27s contribution is novel in providing empirical evidence exposing the interplay between socio-demographic factors, new venture start-up phases, to entrepreneurial networks. Prospective scholarly research need to improve our understanding about the effects of network evolution on the entrepreneurial trajectory, as well to develop a greater understanding on how, when and why MENA-based entrepreneurial networks emerge, develop and change over time. © 2013, Emerald Group Publishing Limite

BACKGROUND: Current knowledge on the ideal local anesthetic concentration for the ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane block (TAPB) in pediatrics is scarce. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of US-guided TAPB at two different concentrations of bupivacaine in pediatrics undergoing unilateral inguinal hernia repair. METHODS: After random allocation, 74 children aged 1-8 were randomized to receive US-guided TAPB by using 1 mg.kg RESULTS: Sixty-four children were recruited for the study. Postoperative pain scores were equal between the two groups. There was no need for a rescue analgesic in any group after the postoperative 6 CONCLUSION: TAPB using 1 mg.kg TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial was retrospectively registered at Clinicaltrals.gov , NCT04202367

Systemic immune-inflammation index, and neutrophilto-lymphocyte and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios can predict clinical outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome

PMID: 37145864WOS:000989138200001Objective: Inflammatory mechanisms play an important role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. The clinical and prognostic importance of inflammatory parameters, such as neutrophil-lymphocyte (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratios (PLR) in complete blood counts in acute myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular diseases has been demonstrated. However, systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) calculated from neutrophils, lymphocytes and platelets in the complete blood cell count has not been studied sufficiently and is thought to provide a better prediction. This study investigated whether haematological parameters such as SII, NLR and PLR were associated with clinical outcomes in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients. Methods: We included 1 103 patients who underwent coronary angiography for ACS between January 2017 and December 2021. The association between major adverse cardiac events (MACE) that developed in hospital and at 50 months of follow up and SII, NLR and PLR was compared. Long-term MACE were defined as mortality, re-infarction and target-vessel revascularisation. SII was calculated using the formula: NLR × total platelet count in the peripheral blood (per mm3). Results: Of the 1 103 patients, 403 were diagnosed with ST-elevation myocardial infarction and 700 with non-STelevation myocardial infarction. The patients were divided into a MACE and a non-MACE group. In hospital and during the 50-month follow up, 195 MACE were observed. SII, PLR and NLR were found to be statistically significantly higher in the MACE group (p < 0.001). SII, C-reactive protein level, age and white blood cell count were independent predictors of MACE in ACS patients. Conclusions: SII was found to be a strong independent predictor of poor outcomes in ACS patients. This predictive power was greater than that of PLR and NLR

High triglyceride-glucose index is associated with poor prognosis in patients with acute coronary syndrome in long-term follow-up

    No full text
WOS:000854797500001 PubMed ID36112779The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is calculated from fasting triglycerides and fasting glucose levels and is an indicator of insulin resistance. The present study investigates whether the TyG index has a role in predicting clinical outcomes in cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This retrospective study included 646 patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and 1048 patients with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). The association between major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) that developed in-hospital and at 60 months of follow-up and TyG index values were compared. Patients were divided into 2 groups: TyG index values of >= 8.65 and = 8.65 (P < .001). TyG index, C-reactive protein, and age were independent predictors of MACEs in both the NSTEMI and STEMI groups. The present study found a significant association between higher TyG index values and increased risk of MACEs in ACS patients. The TyG index may prove useful to predict clinical outcomes in ACS patients
