Networking Behavior in Thin Film and Nanostructure Growth Dynamics

Thin film coatings have been essential in development of several micro and nano-scale devices. To realize thin film coatings various deposition techniques are employed, each yielding surface morphologies with different characteristics of interest. Therefore, understanding and control of the surface growth is of great interest. In this paper, we devise a novel network-based modeling of the growth dynamics of such thin films and nano-structures. We specifically map dynamic steps taking place during the growth to components (e.g., nodes, links) of a corresponding network. We present initial results showing that this network-based modeling approach to the growth dynamics can simplify our understanding of the fundamental physical dynamics such as shadowing and re-emission effects

Inverse-square law between time and amplitude for crossing tipping thresholds

A classical scenario for tipping is that a dynamical system experiences a slow parameter drift across a fold tipping point, caused by a run-away positive feedback loop. We study what happens if one turns around after one has crossed the threshold. We derive a simple criterion that relates how far the parameter exceeds the tipping threshold maximally and how long the parameter stays above the threshold to avoid tipping in an inverse-square law to observable properties of the dynamical system near the fold. For the case when the dynamical system is subject to stochastic forcing we give an approximation to the probability of tipping if a parameter changing in time reverses} near the tipping point. The derived approximations are valid if the parameter change in time is sufficiently slow. We demonstrate for a higher dimensional system, a model for the Indian Summer Monsoon, how numerically observed escape from the equilibrium converge to our asymptotic expressions. The inverse-square law between peak of the parameter forcing and the time the parameter spends above a given threshold is also visible in the level curves of equal probability when the system is subject to random disturbances.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, Supplementary Material found at https://figshare.com/articles/Monsoon_supplementary_material_final_pdf/760582

Developing and verifying a set of principles for the cyber security of the critical infrastructures of Turkey

Critical infrastructures are vital assets for countries as a harm given to critical infrastructures may affect public order, economic welfare and/or national security. Today, cyber systems are extensively used to control and monitor critical infrastructures. Therefore, cyber threats have the potential to adversely affect the order of societies and countries. In this PhD study, the root causes of the susceptibility of the critical infrastructures of Turkey to the cyber threats are identified by analyzing the qualitative data with the grounded theory method. The extracted root causes are verified by two experts. The set of principles for the cyber security of the critical infrastructures are determined by introducing the root causes to six experts in a five-phased Delphi survey. A state-level cyber security maturity model to measure the readiness level of the critical infrastructure protection efforts is developed by using the set of principles. Because maturity criteria are grounded on the root causes of the susceptibility to cyber threats, the maturity model is named Vulnerability Driven National Cyber Security Maturity Model. The readiness level of the critical infrastructure protection efforts of Turkey is measured by the participation of ten former/current government officials in the maturity survey. The root causes, the set of principles, and the results of the maturity survey are compared with the relevant studies of the academia, non-profit organizations and governments

AN OVERVIEW OF WOMEN AND THEIR PROBLEMS IN TANZIMAT (REFORM) ERA BASED ON THE NOVEL “ESCAPADE” (SERGÜZEŞT)

Abstract. The Imperial Edict of Gulhane, which was proclaimed in 1839, marked a breakthrough in the civilization understanding which was in domination for centuries. After that year Turkish society adopted rapid cultural changes in almost every field and tried to renovate itself in many areas by seeing an example in the West and especially in France. Literary works are the most important sources that we can refer to in order to understand this change and some problems that it led to. It is clear that careful and detailed reading of such novels will reveal many points that are left between the lines or somehow went unnoticed until today (Nazoktabar & Tohidi, 2014; Muyambiri & Chabaefe, 2018). Based on these premises, an attempt has been made to analyze in detail from the viewpoint of problems between men and women the “Sergüzeşt” novel which is considered an important work of Tanzimat Era by representing the transition from romanticism to realism in Turkish literature. Departing from the main character of the novel, Dilber, the authors tried to display the cariye (female slaves) character portrayed in Tanzimat novels and some problems related to women which developed within the female slavery understanding of that period.Keywords: Woman, Slavery, Freedom, Education, Love

MINDFULNESS IN PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELOR EDUCATION

Mindfulness, an essential concept in psychological counseling education, includes focusing the individual's attention and being aware of his experiences in the present. Psychological counselor candidates with a high level of mindfulness can be a big plus for themselves and their clients to gain this skill while working as field experts. In this context, this study examines the counselor candidates' mindfulness in counselor education and the relations between self-knowledge and mindfulness. Regarding this aim, we conducted the research with 309 psychological counselor candidates continuing their education at xx University, the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling. We used the Integrative Self-Knowledge Scale and the Toronto Mindfulness Scale for data collection. Results showed positive and significant correlations between the self-knowledge of the counselor candidates and their mindfulness. Another finding revealed that the curiosity sub-dimension of mindfulness was a significant predictor of the self-knowledge of counselor candidates. Findings revealed that mindfulness and self-knowledge differed statistically significantly regarding gender and grade level. These results underline that mindfulness, which is influential in developing dimensions such as therapeutic communication and social skills, should be included in counselor training
