A Note on the Thermodynamics of the Wet-and Dry-Bulb Hygrometer
The paper deals with the thermodynamic study of the wet-and-dry bulb
hygrometer as applied to other liquids besides water. Hygroscopic liquids are also included.

Antibody localization in horse, rabbit, and goat antilymphocyte sera
The localization of antibodies was studied in rabbit, goat, and horse ALS raised by weekly immunization with canine or human spleen cells for 4 to 12 weeks. A combination of analytic techniques was used including column chromatography, electrophoresis, immunoelectrophoresis, determination of protein concentration, and measurement of antibody titers. In the rabbit and goat ALS, virtually all of the leukoagglutinins and lymphocytotoxins were in the easily separable IgG; accidentally induced thromboagglutinins were in the same location. In the rabbit hemagglutinins were found in both the IgG and IgM, whereas in the goat these were almost exclusively in the IgM. The antiwhite cell antibodies were most widely distributed in the horse. The cytotoxins were primarily in the IgG, but the leukoagglutinins were most heavily concentrated in the T-equine globulin which consists mostly of IgA. By differential ammonium sulfate precipitation of a horse antidoglymphocyte serum, fractions were prepared that were rich in IgG and IgA. Both were able to delay the rejection of canine renal homografts, the IgA-rich preparation to a somewhat greater degree. The findings in this study have been discussed in relation to the refining techniques that have been used for the production of globulin from heterologous ALS. © 1970
Novel duplex vapor electrochemical method for silicon solar cells
Progress in the development of low-cost solar arrays is reported. Topics covered include: (1) development of a simplified feed system for the Na used in the Na-SiF4 reactor; (2) production of high purity silicon through the reduction of sodium fluosilicate with sodium metal; (3) the leaching process for recovering silicon from the reaction products of the SiF4-Na reaction; and (4) silicon separation by the melting of the reaction product
Barriers to Changing Dietary Behavior
Abstract
Dietary change requires giving up long established patterns of eating behavior and acquiring new habits. ‘Noncompliance’
to diet advice may be a result of inability to provide diet self-management training and getting the
right messages across to change eating behavior. Using a pre-tested questionnaire based interview, we carried out a
study amongst 350 adults (> 20 years) with type 2 diabetes from two metro cities in South India, who had previously
received diet advice with the objective to understand perceptions, attitudes and practices, as well as study factors
that enhance or reduce compliance to diet advice. Ninety six patients (28%) followed diet for the full duration of
diabetes (Group1), 131 (38%) followed diet for a partial duration varying between more than a quarter to three
quarters of the total diabetes duration (Group 2) and 115 (34%) did not follow diet advice (Group 3) – followed for
a duration less than a quarter of their diabetes duration.
Study results show that many factors both patient and health care provider related influence outcomes of dietary
advice. Factors that have a positive impact on compliance are – older age, shorter duration, nuclear family, good
family support, less busy work life, higher health consciousness, advice given by dietician, more frequent visits to
dietician, advice that includes elements to promote overall health not merely control of blood sugar, diet counseling
that is easy to understand and use and includes healthy food options, cooking methods, practical guidance to
deal with lifestyle issues. We conclude that patient barriers related to life circumstance are mostly non-modifiable,
most modifiable barriers are related to behavioural aspect and the inability of the health care provider to provide
individualized diet advice and self management training. Efforts must be made to improve counseling skills
Towards the Formal Reliability Analysis of Oil and Gas Pipelines
It is customary to assess the reliability of underground oil and gas
pipelines in the presence of excessive loading and corrosion effects to ensure
a leak-free transport of hazardous materials. The main idea behind this
reliability analysis is to model the given pipeline system as a Reliability
Block Diagram (RBD) of segments such that the reliability of an individual
pipeline segment can be represented by a random variable. Traditionally,
computer simulation is used to perform this reliability analysis but it
provides approximate results and requires an enormous amount of CPU time for
attaining reasonable estimates. Due to its approximate nature, simulation is
not very suitable for analyzing safety-critical systems like oil and gas
pipelines, where even minor analysis flaws may result in catastrophic
consequences. As an accurate alternative, we propose to use a
higher-order-logic theorem prover (HOL) for the reliability analysis of
pipelines. As a first step towards this idea, this paper provides a
higher-order-logic formalization of reliability and the series RBD using the
HOL theorem prover. For illustration, we present the formal analysis of a
simple pipeline that can be modeled as a series RBD of segments with
exponentially distributed failure times.Comment: 15 page

HOPE: Help fOr People with money, employment, benefit or housing problems: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial
Background:
Self-harm and suicide increase in times of economic recession. Factors including job loss, austerity measures, financial difficulties and house repossession contribute to the risk. Vulnerable individuals commonly experience difficulties in navigating the benefits system and in accessing the available sources of welfare and debt advice, and this contributes to their distress. Our aim is to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a brief psychosocial intervention (the “HOPE” service) for people presenting to hospital emergency departments (ED) following self-harm or in acute distress because of financial, employment, or welfare (benefit) difficulties.
Method:
A pilot study including randomisation will be employed to determine whether it is possible to undertake a full-scale trial. Twenty people presenting to the ED who have self-harmed, have suicidal thoughts and depression and/or are in crisis and where financial, employment or benefit problems are cited as contributory factors will be asked to consent to random allocation to the intervention or control arm on a 2:1 basis. People who require secondary mental health follow-up will be excluded. Those randomised to the intervention arm will receive up to six sessions with a mental health worker who will provide practical help with financial and other problems. The mental health worker will use the motivational interviewing method in their interactions with participants. Control participants will receive one session signposting them to existing relevant support organisations. Participants will be followed up after 3 months. Participants and the mental health workers will take part in qualitative interviews to enable refinement of the intervention. The acceptability of outcome measures including the PHQ-9, GAD-7, repeat self-harm, EQ5D-5L and questions about debt, employment and welfare benefits will be explored.
Discussion:
This study will assess whether a full-scale randomised trial of this novel intervention to prevent self-harm among those distressed because of financial difficulties is feasible, including the acceptability of randomisation, potential rate of recruitment and the acceptability of outcome measures.

Novel duplex vapor-electrochemical method for silicon solar cells
A process was developed for the economic production of high purity Si from inexpensive reactants, based on the Na reduction of SiF4 gas. The products of reaction (NaF, Si) are separated by either aqueous leaching or by direct melting of the NaF-Si product mixture. Impurities known to degrade solar cell performance are all present at sufficiently low concentrations so that melt solidification (e.g., Czochralski) will provide a silicon material suitable for solar cells
