    Little Higgs Model Completed with a Chiral Fermionic Sector

    The implementation of the little Higgs mechanism to solve the hierarchy problem provides an interesting guiding principle to build particle physics models beyond the electroweak scale. Most model building works, however, pay not much attention to the fermionic sector. Through a case example, we illustrate how a complete and consistent fermionic sector of the TeV effective field theory may actually be largely dictated by the gauge structure of the model. The completed fermionic sector has specific flavor physics structure, and many phenomenological constraints on the model can thus be obtained beyond gauge, Higgs, and top physics.     Diffusive Radiation in One-dimensional Langmuir Turbulence

    We calculate spectra of radiation produced by a relativistic particle in the presence of one-dimensional Langmuir turbulence which might be generated by a streaming instability in the plasma, in particular, in the shock front or at the shock-shock interactions. The shape of the radiation spectra is shown to depend sensitively on the angle between the particle velocity and electric field direction. The radiation spectrum in the case of exactly transverse particle motion is degenerate and similar to that of spatially uniform Langmuir oscillations. In case of oblique propagation, the spectrum is more complex, it consists of a number of power-law regions and may contain a distinct high-frequency spectral peak. %at \omega=2\omega\pe \gamma^2.     Pseudorandomness for Regular Branching Programs via Fourier Analysis

    We present an explicit pseudorandom generator for oblivious, read-once, permutation branching programs of constant width that can read their input bits in any order. The seed length is O(log2n)O(\log^2 n), where nn is the length of the branching program. The previous best seed length known for this model was n1/2+o(1)n^{1/2+o(1)}, which follows as a special case of a generator due to Impagliazzo, Meka, and Zuckerman (FOCS 2012) (which gives a seed length of s1/2+o(1)s^{1/2+o(1)} for arbitrary branching programs of size ss). Our techniques also give seed length n1/2+o(1)n^{1/2+o(1)} for general oblivious, read-once branching programs of width 2no(1)2^{n^{o(1)}}, which is incomparable to the results of Impagliazzo et al.Our pseudorandom generator is similar to the one used by Gopalan et al. (FOCS 2012) for read-once CNFs, but the analysis is quite different; ours is based on Fourier analysis of branching programs. In particular, we show that an oblivious, read-once, regular branching program of width ww has Fourier mass at most (2w2)k(2w^2)^k at level kk, independent of the length of the program.Comment: RANDOM 201

    Application of Photovoice with Focus Groups to Explore Dietary Behaviors of Older Filipino Adults with Cardiovascular Disease

    Filipino Americans have high rates of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This study explored the dietary behaviors, a modifiable risk factor, of Filipinos with CVD. Filipinos with CVD were recruited and trained to do Photovoice. Participants took photos to depict their “food experience,” defined as their daily dietary activities. Participants then shared their photos during focus groups. Focus group transcripts were analyzed using an iterative, grounded theory approach. Among 38 Filipino participants, the mean age was 70 years old and all were foreign-born. Major themes included efforts to retain connection to Filipino culture through food, and dietary habits shaped by cultural health beliefs. Many believed that traditional dietary practices increased CVD risk. Receiving a CVD diagnosis and clinician advice changed their dietary behaviors. Household members, the physical environment, and economic constraints also influenced dietary behaviors. Photovoice is feasible among older Filipinos and may enhance understanding of drivers of dietary behaviors

    Semiclassical spatial correlations in chaotic wave functions

    We study the spatial autocorrelation of energy eigenfunctions ψn(q)\psi_n({\bf q}) corresponding to classically chaotic systems in the semiclassical regime. Our analysis is based on the Weyl-Wigner formalism for the spectral average Cϵ(q+,q,E)C_{\epsilon}({\bf q^{+}},{\bf q^{-}},E) of ψn(q+)ψn(q)\psi_n({\bf q}^{+})\psi_n^*({\bf q}^{-}), defined as the average over eigenstates within an energy window ϵ\epsilon centered at EE. In this framework CϵC_{\epsilon} is the Fourier transform in momentum space of the spectral Wigner function W(x,E;ϵ)W({\bf x},E;\epsilon). Our study reveals the chord structure that CϵC_{\epsilon} inherits from the spectral Wigner function showing the interplay between the size of the spectral average window, and the spatial separation scale. We discuss under which conditions is it possible to define a local system independent regime for CϵC_{\epsilon}. In doing so, we derive an expression that bridges the existing formulae in the literature and find expressions for Cϵ(q+,q,E)C_{\epsilon}({\bf q^{+}}, {\bf q^{-}},E) valid for any separation size q+q|{\bf q^{+}}-{\bf q^{-}}|.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR
