Abstract : In the 21st century most organizations, whether public or private, look at innovation as a survival factor. Innovation comes from the recombination of existing knowledge or from the creation of new knowledge which may occur in the context of knowledge sharing. Hence, knowledge sharing has a leading role in the context of innovation. Among the strategies for sharing knowledge both Communities of Practice (CoPs) and Virtual Communities of Practice (VCoPs) stand out for their possibility to act as catalysts for innovation processes. The aim of this study is to identify characteristics of VCoPs that influence innovation processes in a Brazilian public entreprise. To achieve this, an exploratory qualitative research -a kind of case study was conducted in three VCoPs who helped to carry out incremental innovations in the Brazilian Postal Service (Correios). The data were collected in semi-structured interviews with members of the surveyed VCoPs. After comparing the characteristics of VCoPs that influence innovation processes found in the reviewed literature and the ones identified in the case study, it was found that those characteristics are related to the structural configuration of VCoPs, to their domain, to their dynamics, and to the people in the group  both members and moderators. This research shows that most of those characteristics are associated with the presence of persons that are open to share what they know and to create something new: the topic of VCoPs for innovation entails an anthropocentric approach. This Master s thesis contributes to the theoretical area with a study to understand how VCoPs have supported innovation processes in a Brazilian company of the public sector. This research may also contribute to practical applications of innovation management by using VCoPs in organizations in spite of the main limitation of the study: the results cannot be generalized. Nevertheless the results can be used as starting point for future studies with the aim to generalize the subject

Impact of Various Effects of Smoking in the Mouth on Motivating Dental Patients to Quit Smoking

We explored the impact of addressing personally relevant effects of smoking in the mouth on promoting the motivation to quit in a dental setting at personal and public levels. Stages of behavior change and attempts to quit smoking by smokers were recorded during dental visits. Dentists selected and gave motivational information from 24 topics relevant to a patient's oral health status, risk, or dental treatment. During the dental visit, each topic was presented to patients. Topics of gingival melanin pigmentation and periodontal disease risk were most frequently presented. Progression through stages of behavior change and attempts to quit smoking were observed after presentation of each topic. At a personal level, progression through stages was most frequently observed after the patient was shown an image of pediatric dental caries and smoker's palate, and attempts to quit was most frequently observed after the patient shown an image of the effects of smoking cessation and pediatric dental caries. At the public level, enhancing the motivation to progress through stages and attempts to quit was most frequently observed after the presentation of effects of smoking cessation and discoloration of teeth, although the intensity of enhanced motivation significantly correlated with the frequency of presentation, which was not the highest for these topics. Although various smoking effects on the mouth have potential impact on promoting the motivation to quit, the impact on enhancing motivation is not necessarily consistent at personal and public levels

A treatment case of Sotos syndrome

Sotos syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by overgrowth in childhood, specific facial manifestations, advanced bone age, and mental retardation. Although only one case report of Sotos syndrome treated with surgical orthodontics has thus far been published, there have also been a few detailed reports of long-term observation of Sotos syndrome through total orthodontic treatment. This article aimed to present the case of a growing patient with skeletal mandibular protrusion and unilateral posterior crossbite as present in Sotos syndrome treated with a non-surgical orthodontic technique. A 10-year-old boy was diagnosed with skeletal mandibular protrusion and posterior crossbite associated with Sotos syndrome. After maxillary lateral expansion, the skeletal Class III relationship with an anterior crossbite improved owing to mandibular clockwise rotation, while the facemask had a marginal effect. At the completion of growth at 16 years, he had a skeletal Class I relationship, and thus, conventional orthodontic treatment with preadjusted edgewise appliances was initiated. After 41 months of multibracket treatment, acceptable occlusion with a functional Class I relationship was obtained. At 12 months postretention, no or few changes in occlusion and facial features were observed. Our results demonstrate that considering the maxillofacial vertical growth during peripubertal period associated with Sotos syndrome, much attention should be paid to the early orthopedic treatment with the facemask and/or chin cap

Anthropogenic contributions to slow warming over 1998-2012

The observed global mean surface temperature increase from 1998 to 2012 was slower than that since 1951. The relative contributions of all relevant factors including climate forcers, however, have not been comprehensively analyzed. Using a reduced-complexity climate model and an observationally constrained statistical model, we find that La Nina cooling and a descending solar cycle contributed approximately 50% and 26% of the total warming slowdown during 1998-2012 compared to 1951-2012. Furthermore, reduced ozone-depleting substances and methane accounted for roughly a quarter of the total warming slowdown, which can be explained by changes in atmospheric concentrations. We identify that human factors played an important role in slowing global warming during 1998-2012, shedding light on the evidence for controlling global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.Comment: 55 pages, 26 figures, 4 table
