    Mapping of soil banks using ERTS-1 pictures

    Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1) pictures of different wavelengths (MSS 4,5,6,7) were used in the study of two strip mine areas in southeastern Ohio. The first area was near Piedmont Lake and the second area was near New Lexington. Prints were examined under a binocular microscope and the gray tone was correlated with the actual ground conditions at several sites. For the New Lexington area, color infrared pictures taken at an elevation of 18,000 feet were also used for correlation with the ERTS-1 imagery. The results indicate that MSS 5 and 7 are most useful in defining the stripped land and show that the hydrological and soil characteristics are remarkably different than the surrounding lands

    Observation of ferromagnetic resonance in strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3)

    We report the observation of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in SrRuO3 using the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The FMR oscillations in the time-domain appear in response to a sudden, optically induced change in the direction of easy-axis anistropy. The high FMR frequency, 250 GHz, and large Gilbert damping parameter, alpha ~ 1, are consistent with strong spin-orbit coupling. We find that the parameters associated with the magnetization dynamics, including alpha, have a non-monotonic temperature dependence, suggestive of a link to the anomalous Hall effect.Comment: submitted to Phys.     Determination of the spin-flip time in ferromagnetic SrRuO3 from time-resolved Kerr measurements

    We report time-resolved Kerr effect measurements of magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic SrRuO3. We observe that the demagnetization time slows substantially at temperatures within 15K of the Curie temperature, which is ~ 150K. We analyze the data with a phenomenological model that relates the demagnetization time to the spin flip time. In agreement with our observations the model yields a demagnetization time that is inversely proportional to T-Tc. We also make a direct comparison of the spin flip rate and the Gilbert damping coefficient showing that their ratio very close to kBTc, indicating a common origin for these phenomena

    Comparison of the in Vitro Uptake and Toxicity of Collagen- and Synthetic Polymer-Coated Gold Nanoparticles

    We studied the physico-chemical properties (size, shape, zeta-potential),cellular internalization and toxicity of gold nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized with the most abundant mammalian protein, collagen. The properties of these gold NPs were compared to the same sized gold NPs coated with synthetic poly(isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride) (PMA). Intracellular uptake and cytotoxicity were assessed in two cell lines (cervical carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma cells) by employing inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis and a cell viability assay based on 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT),respectively. We found that the collagen-coated gold NPs exhibit lower cytotoxicity, but higher uptake levels than PMA-coated gold NPs. These results demonstrate that the surface coating of Au NPs plays a decisive role in their biocompatibility

    Primary peritoneal mesothelioma: A rare cause of malignant ascites

    Abstract Introduction: The evaluation of peritoneal masses requires a focused, systematic approach. While peritoneal fluid analysis and axial imaging are essential to the workup, further analysis is often needed for a final diagnosis. We present a case of primary peritoneal mesothelioma mimicking peritoneal carcinomatosis of gastrointestinal origin on computerized tomography (CT) imaging. Case presentation: A 61-year-old man presented to the hospital with an approximate 1-month history of abdominal distention, dyspnea, nausea and fatigue. Peritoneal studies revealed serum-ascites-albumin-gradient (SAAG) of less than 1.1, consistent with non-portal hypertension ascites. CT abdomen revealed large-volume ascites with omental caking, concerning for peritoneal carcinomatosis. Peritoneal fluid cytology was initially inconclusive, prompting ultrasound-guided peritoneal biopsies, which revealed primary abdominal mesothelioma. Conclusions: Neither CT nor peritoneal cytology are typically sufficient for the diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma. When strong clinical suspicion exists, early tissue biopsies should be pursued

    Design, calibration, and performance of the MINERvA detector

    The MINERvA(6) experiment is designed to perform precision studies of neutrino-nucleus scattering using nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu) neutrinos incident at 1-20 GeV in the NuMI beam at Fermilab. This article presents a detailed description of the MINERvA detector and describes the ex situ and in situ techniques employed to characterize the detector and monitor its performance. The detector is composed of a finely segmented scintillator-based inner tracking region surrounded by electromagnetic and hadronic sampling calorimetry. The upstream portion of the detector includes planes of graphite, iron and lead interleaved between tracking planes to facilitate the study of nuclear effects in neutrino interactions. Observations concerning the detector response over sustained periods of running are reported. The detector design and methods of operation have relevance to future neutrino experiments in which segmented scintillator tracking is utilized. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
