    Periostin as a novel biomarker for postoperative recurrence of chronic rhinosinitis with nasal polyps

    We previously reported that chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) was subdivided into four chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) subtypes using the JESREC scoring system. We sought to identify the gene expression profile and biomarkers related with CRSwNP by RNA-sequence. RNA-sequencing was performed to identify differentially expressed genes between nasal polyps (NPs) and inferior turbinate mucosa from 6 patients with CRSwNP, and subsequently, quantitative real-time PCR was performed to verify the results. ELISA was performed to identify possible biomarkers for postoperative recurrence. In the RNA-sequencing results, periostin (POSTN) expression was the highest in NP. We focused on POSTN and investigated the protein level of POSTN by immunohistochemistry and ELISA. POSTN was diffusely expressed in moderate and severe eosinophilic CRS using immunohistochemistry, and its staining pattern was associated with the severity of the phenotype of the CRSwNP (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference between the POSTN high/low groups for postoperative recurrence when the cutoff point was set at 115.5 ng/ml (P = 0.0072). Our data suggests that the protein expression level of POSTN was associated with the severity of CRSwNP, and serum POSTN can be a novel biomarker for postoperative recurrence of CRSwNP

    Surgery is the current first choice for oral cancer treatment. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy, molecular targeted drugs, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are still used as adjuvant therapy for advanced cancer. In addition, postoperative rehabilitation and multidisciplinary treatment have also been developed in recent years. Multidisciplinary team approaches and supportive care in oral cancer treatment reportedly shorten the time to treatment and improve outcomes. Although there is enough evidence confirming the role of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, dentists, and dental hygienists in supportive care in oral cancer treatment, there are very few systematic studies. In particular, oral health management is a concept that encompasses oral function management, oral hygiene management, and oral care during oral cancer treatment. We provide a narrative review focusing on oral health management from a multidisciplinary and supportive care perspective, applicable in oral cancer treatment

    Isolated granulomatous angiitis with eosinophilia in the central nervous system

    A 73-year-old man was admitted for epileptic seizures. Diffuse white matter lesions were observed in the bilateral occipital lobes, and the left occipital lobe biopsy showed eosinophils and giant cells in the walls of medium to small blood vessels, fibrinoid necrosis, occluded blood vessels, and glia degeneration. Allergic granulomatous angiitis was pathologically diagnosed. No eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis findings were observed in other organs, and isolated granulomatous angiitis with eosinophilia in the central nervous system was clinically diagnosed. Prednisolone combined with immunosuppressant therapies improved his symptoms markedly

    Coronavirus infections in raccoons in Hokkaido, Japan, were identified by serological analysis of 379 serum samples. In the virus neutralization tests, the antibody for transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), a group I coronavirus, was detected in 11 (3%) serum samples, which were further tested for canine coronavirus (CCoV), and 5 sera showed positive results. The antibody for bovine coronavirus (BCoV), a group II coronavirus, was not detected in any of the serum samples. These results indicate an infection of group I coronaviruses in the feral raccoons in Hokkaido, Japan
