Positive Psychology Intervention for Dyslexia: A Qualitative Study
The objective of this research is to identify strengths among the individuals with dyslexia and design a positive psychology intervention to support such individuals. Dyslexia is a combination of abilities and difficulties that affect the learning process in areas as such reading, spelling and writing. It is a persistent condition. The research aims to adapt positive psychology techniques to support individuals with dyslexia. Population of the research will be undergraduate and college level students with dyslexia. First phase of the study will be conducted on a sample of undergraduate and college level students with dyslexia in Bolton, UK. The concept of treatment in positive psychology is not only to fix the component just what is wrong, instead it is also to develop and construct on what is right in the individual. The first phase of the research aims to identify the signature strengths among the individuals with dyslexia using Interviews, Descriptions on personal experiences on 'My life with Dyslexia', and Values in Action (VIA) strength survey. In order to conduct the survey for individuals with dyslexia, the VIA survey has been hosted in a website which is solely developed in the form of dyslexia friendly context. Dyslexia friendly website for surveys had designed and developed following the British Dyslexia Association guidelines. The findings of the first phase would be utilized for the second phase of the research to develop the positive psychology intervention

Exploring creativity : creativity, cognitive styles and learning styles among engineering and computing students
The purpose of the study was to understand and describe the level of nonverbal
creativity and its relation to cognitive and learning styles of engineering
and computing students. This might possibly provide engineering educators with
knowledge of the above three factors and their adaptation to teaching and
learning. The study was an exploratory-comparative study with one independent
variable (engineering versus computing students) and three dependent variables
[the Non-Verbal Test of Creative Thinking (Mehdi, 1973), The Group Embedded
Figures Test, (Witkin et al, 1971); the Visual, Auditory, Read and Write Kinesthetic
VARK Questionnaire , (Fleming, 1992) ]. The study aimed to compare the level of
non-verbal creativity and influence of other attributes on the creativity of students
of engineering and computing science. Additional aims were to see if there were
significant differences in cognitive and learning styles of students from
engineering and computing science. Data were collected by administering the
three tests to engineering and computing students in three colleges in Bangalore
(N=105). Data analysis was conducted using t-test, ANOVA, MANOVA and
Pearson correlation coefficients. Findings indicated that engineering and
computer students have above average levels of non-verbal creativity. Engineering
students are more field-independent compared to computing students. Computing
students are field-dependent in their cognitive style. Engineering and computer
students focus more on the kinesthetic learning style. The implications of these
findings for the education of engineering and computing students are discussed
From languishing dyslexia to thriving dyslexia: developing a new conceptual approach to working with people with dyslexia
This is an account of personal narratives shared by several people with dyslexia. Most
of these are presented in their original quotation format to provide personal accounts
of the lives of people with dyslexia. In this paper the author shares her conversations
with her participants. This paper provides an original conceptual model, which is
currently been tested empirically. Dyslexia affects the learning process in areas as such
reading, and spelling. Conversely abilities or strengths can be seen in other areas, such
as developing coping strategies to manage and overcome challenges. This research
aims to adapt positive psychology techniques to support individuals with dyslexia. To
develop positive psychology interventions, individuals will be helped to discover their
five signature strengths. The VIA (Values in Action) Strengths Survey has been hosted
in a website which has been developed in the form of a dyslexia user friendly format,
such as providing the ability for respondents to change fonts and font sizes, colors and
a text to speech option. This paper introduces the theoretical model of ‘How to move
from Languishing Dyslexia to Thriving Dyslexia.
Understanding, action, and the use of the cane in Sri Lankan schools
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to consider the use of corporal punishment in schools in Sri Lanka, and to offer reflections on how cybernetics could shed light on its persistence despite initiatives to ban it.
Design/methodology/approach
– The ASC 2013 Heinz von Foerster Award for the most significant contribution to the conference was awarded following discussion of the use of the cane in Sri Lankan schools. This paper provides a personal account of difficulties in overcoming the use of corporal punishment in a school in Sri Lanka.
Findings
– The Sri Lankan education system is introduced. The response of the ASC 2013 is discussed. The feedback between social forces and the education system is seen as being too complex for analysis, and Bateson's conception of ethos is proposed as an appropriate starting point for making progress on this issue.
Social implications
– The use of corporal punishment has been forbidden by the Ministry of Education, but the practice evidently continues and there is evidence that this has negative impact on young people. The paper offers an approach to understanding the reasons for the prevalence and persistence of corporal punishment, as a first step towards designing measures to eliminate it.
Originality/value
– The paper takes a new approach to understanding the persistence of corporal punishment in Sri Lanka by applying Bateson's concepts of ethos and schismogenesis
