Multipole Gravitational Lensing and High-order Perturbations on the Quadrupole Lens
An arbitrary surface mass density of gravitational lens can be decomposed
into multipole components. We simulate the ray-tracing for the multipolar mass
distribution of generalized SIS (Singular Isothermal Sphere) model, based on
the deflection angles which are analytically calculated. The magnification
patterns in the source plane are then derived from inverse shooting technique.
As have been found, the caustics of odd mode lenses are composed of two
overlapping layers for some lens models. When a point source traverses such
kind of overlapping caustics, the image numbers change by \pm 4, rather than
\pm 2. There are two kinds of images for the caustics. One is the critical
curve and the other is the transition locus. It is found that the image number
of the fold is exactly the average value of image numbers on two sides of the
fold, while the image number of the cusp is equal to the smaller one. We also
focus on the magnification patterns of the quadrupole (m = 2) lenses under the
perturbations of m = 3, 4 and 5 mode components, and found that one, two, and
three butterfly or swallowtail singularities can be produced respectively. With
the increasing intensity of the high-order perturbations, the singularities
grow up to bring sixfold image regions. If these perturbations are large enough
to let two or three of the butterflies or swallowtails contact, eightfold or
tenfold image regions can be produced as well. The possible astronomical
applications are discussed.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure
Adsorptive and kinetic characterization of aqueous zinc removal by biochars
Biochars have shown a great potential to treat stormwater runoff contaminated with heavy metals due to their favorable physical and chemical characteristics. Biochar materials were produced from pyrolysis of oak tree and wood at 400C and 450C respectively, and their Zn adsorption behavior from aqueous solutions were evaluated to assess their applicability as a filter media for stormwater treatment. Two adsorption isotherm models, Freundlich and Langmuir, were used to fit the batch-scale experimental data. The kinetics of Zn adsorption was investigated under two contrasting physical condition (stagnant vs. agitated). The adsorption isotherm was better fitted with the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.99) than the Freundlich model (R2 = 0.62-0.72). Oak tree biochar (~ 21,400 mg kg-1) outperformed wood biochar (~ 6,100 mg kg-1) in the Zn adsorption due to higher molar ratio of oxygen to carbon in the oak tree biochar. The Zn adsorption by the biochars were less effective under stagnant condition, suggesting that external energy for agitation is needed when considering biochar as a stormwater filter media. Overall the kinetics data of Zn adsorption fitted well with the pseudo-second order model (R2 = 0.99), indicating that chemisorption was dominant mechanism for the Zn adsorption onto the biochars. This study highlights a potential for biochar to be an effective adsorbent to remove Zn with relatively short contact time for stormwater and industrial applications
Effects of Biochar Production Methods and Biomass Types on Lead Removal from Aqueous Solution
Biochar has proven its potential in removing heavy metal ions from water. The objective of this study was to evaluate locally obtained biomass feedstocks for biochar production and their efficiency as a sorbent for aqueous lead (Pb2+) removal. The biomass feedstocks consisted of avocado seed, avocado peel, grapefruit peel, and brown seaweed, which represent agricultural and marine biomasses. The biochar materials were produced in two different methods: (1) a laboratory tube furnace at 300 Ā°C and (2) a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) biochar maker, āBioCharlie Logā. The biochars were characterized for selected physicochemical properties, and batch adsorption tests with 10 mg Pb2+ Lā1 were conducted. All biochars exhibited \u3e90% Pb2+ removal with the avocado seed and grapefruit peel biochars being the most effective (99%) from the tube-furnace-produced biochars. BioCharlie-produced-biochars showed similar Pb2+ removal (90ā97%) with brown seaweed and avocado seed biochars being the most effective (97%). Land-based biochars showed a higher carbon content (\u3e53%) than the brown seaweed biochar (28%), which showed the highest ash content (68%). Our results suggested that oxygen-containing surface functional groups in land-based biochar and mineral (ash) fraction in marine-based biochar play a key role in Pb2+ removal. View Full-Tex
Direct growth of ultra-long platinum nanolawns on a semiconductor photocatalyst
A template- and surfactant-free process, thermally assisted photoreduction, is developed to prepare vertically grown ultra-long Pt nanowires (NWs) (about 30-40 nm in diameter, 5-6 Ī¼m in length, and up to 80 NWs/100 Ī¼m2 in the wire density) on TiO2 coated substrates, including Si wafers and carbon fibers, with the assistance of the photocatalytic ability and semiconductor characteristics of TiO2. A remarkable aspect ratio of up to 200 can be achieved. TEM analytical results suggest that the Pt NWs are single-crystalline with a preferred ć111ć growth direction. The precursor adopted and the heat treatment conditions are crucial for the yield of NWs. The photoelectrons supplied by TiO2 gives rise to the formation of nano-sized Pt nuclei from salt melt or solution. The subsequent growth of NWs is supported by the thermal electrons which also generated from TiO2 during the post thermal treatment. The interactions between the ions and the electrons in the Pt/TiO2 junction are discussed in this study
Tailoring excitonic states of van der Waals bilayers through stacking configuration, band alignment and valley-spin
Excitons in monolayer semiconductors have large optical transition dipole for
strong coupling with light field. Interlayer excitons in heterobilayers, with
layer separation of electron and hole components, feature large electric dipole
that enables strong coupling with electric field and exciton-exciton
interaction, at the cost that the optical dipole is substantially quenched (by
several orders of magnitude). In this letter, we demonstrate the ability to
create a new class of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero-
and homo-bilayers that combines the advantages of monolayer- and
interlayer-excitons, i.e. featuring both large optical dipole and large
electric dipole. These excitons consist of an electron that is well confined in
an individual layer, and a hole that is well extended in both layers, realized
here through the carrier-species specific layer-hybridization controlled
through the interplay of rotational, translational, band offset, and
valley-spin degrees of freedom. We observe different species of such
layer-hybridized valley excitons in different heterobilayer and homobilayer
systems, which can be utilized for realizing strongly interacting
excitonic/polaritonic gases, as well as optical quantum coherent controls of
bidirectional interlayer carrier transfer either with upper conversion or down
conversion in energy
Growth, Reproductive Condition, And Digestive Tubule Atrophy Of Pacific Oyster Crassostrea Gigas In Gamakman Bay Off The Southern Coast Of Korea
Spat of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) were collected from Gamakman Bay, Korea, and raised in a spat hardening facility located in the low intertidal zone of the bay for a hardening/stunting period of 10 mo. Seasonal changes in growth, reproductive condition, and digestive tubule atrophy (DTA) of these hardened/stunted oysters were monitored for more than a year after transplanting to a suspended longline system in a grow-out area in the bay. After transplantation, the hardened/stunted oysters showed a logarithmic increase in shell size for the first 4 mo, from June to October, and growth remained stable from late fall to early spring. During the 12 mo of the grow-out, the shell size of the hardened/stunted oysters increased from 15.4-74.2 mm, and tissue weight increased from 0.49-12.85 g. Histological analysis revealed that gametogenesis of hardened/stunted oysters commenced as early as February when water temperature remained at 10 degrees C, and spawning occurred from July to September when water temperature reached 25-27 degrees C. DTA assessed from histological analysis was higher from September to February, when the chlorophyll a level in the bay was lower. These data suggest that seasonal fluctuations in water temperature and food availability in the water column are the 2 main environmental parameters governing reproduction and growth of oyster in Gamakman Bay, and DTA could be a useful biomarker for monitoring the nutritional condition of oysters
Federated Learning with Diffusion Models for Privacy-Sensitive Vision Tasks
Diffusion models have shown great potential for vision-related tasks,
particularly for image generation. However, their training is typically
conducted in a centralized manner, relying on data collected from publicly
available sources. This approach may not be feasible or practical in many
domains, such as the medical field, which involves privacy concerns over data
collection. Despite the challenges associated with privacy-sensitive data, such
domains could still benefit from valuable vision services provided by diffusion
models. Federated learning (FL) plays a crucial role in enabling decentralized
model training without compromising data privacy. Instead of collecting data,
an FL system gathers model parameters, effectively safeguarding the private
data of different parties involved. This makes FL systems vital for managing
decentralized learning tasks, especially in scenarios where privacy-sensitive
data is distributed across a network of clients. Nonetheless, FL presents its
own set of challenges due to its distributed nature and privacy-preserving
properties. Therefore, in this study, we explore the FL strategy to train
diffusion models, paving the way for the development of federated diffusion
models. We conduct experiments on various FL scenarios, and our findings
demonstrate that federated diffusion models have great potential to deliver
vision services to privacy-sensitive domains
