This study investigated the relationships between selected variables and teacher career satisfaction, and tested 14 research hypotheses formulated on the basis of literature review and a theoretical model of teacher career satisfaction. The sample consisted of 586 first-year teachers in Iowa in the 1985-86 school year. Findings partially supported the hypotheses and the theoretical model. Specifically, no significant relationships between personal characteristics (age and sex) and overall career satisfaction of beginning teachers were found. No significant difference in the overall career satisfaction at different academic preparation levels was found. Elementary teachers were significantly more satisfied with teaching than were either secondary teachers or those teaching at more than one level. Overall career satisfaction was significantly and positively related to the perceived adequacy of teacher preparation in specific program areas; to the importance of these areas to the first-year teaching position; to overall satisfaction with the student teaching experience and other clinical experiences; and to the amount of support received during the first-year of teaching. Beginning teachers who would choose teaching as a career again rated their overall career satisfaction significantly higher than did those who would not and those who were uncertain about choosing teaching again; When overall career satisfaction was predicted from a selected set of 30 predictor variables, the results of the stepwise regression analysis revealed that a combination of nine variables significantly contributed to the prediction of overall career satisfaction, accounting for about 44 percent of the variance for the combined data of male and female teachers. Job involvement and responsibility was the best predictor of overall career satisfaction, accounting for about 26 percent of the variance. The second best predictor of overall career satisfaction was job rewards. Results differed in male and female teachers; Finally, discriminant analysis was conducted in which 31 independent variables were used to differentiate two groups of beginning teachers--those who would choose teaching as a career again, and those who would not or who were uncertain about choosing teaching again. The two groups differed significantly most in overall career satisfaction, job rewards, job involvement and responsibility, support from both AEA (area education agency) consultants and principals, parental and community support, and overall satisfaction with student teaching experience. The two most important variables in differentiating the groups were overall career satisfaction and job rewards

Analysis of the Market Structure and Shift-effects in North China Ports

ABSTRACTThis study divides the foreign trade traffic of major North China ports into export and import cargoes for the past 10 years. Then, the concentration ratios and shift effects are analyzed in order to determine their relationships with the ports’ competition structures. Here, the HHI, a BCG matrix analysis, and the shift effects are applied as study methods. The results indicate that the oligopoly market structure of major North China ports has gradually decreased. Furthermore, the concentration ratios of import cargoes are higher than those of export cargoes, indicating that competition to attract import cargoes will intensify. Therefore, the effects of the South Korea–China FTA mean that the competition structures of these ports with regard to export and import cargoes are highly likely to be differentiated further over time

Flow-Induced Voltage Generation Over Monolayer Graphene in the Presence of Herringbone Grooves

While flow-induced voltage over a graphene layer has been reported, its origin remains unclear. In our previous study, we suggested different mechanisms for different experimental configurations: phonon dragging effect for the parallel alignment and an enhanced out-of-plane phonon mode for the perpendicular alignment (Appl. Phys. Lett. 102:063116, 2011). In order to further examine the origin of flow-induced voltage, we introduced a transverse flow component by integrating staggered herringbone grooves in the microchannel. We found that the flow-induced voltage decreased significantly in the presence of herringbone grooves in both parallel and perpendicular alignments. These results support our previous interpretation

Vertically aligned InGaN nanowires with engineered axial In composition for highly efficient visible light emission.

We report on the fabrication of novel InGaN nanowires (NWs) with improved crystalline quality and high radiative efficiency for applications as nanoscale visible light emitters. Pristine InGaN NWs grown under a uniform In/Ga molar flow ratio (UIF) exhibited multi-peak white-like emission and a high density of dislocation-like defects. A phase separation and broad emission with non-uniform luminescent clusters were also observed for a single UIF NW investigated by spatially resolved cathodoluminescence. Hence, we proposed a simple approach based on engineering the axial In content by increasing the In/Ga molar flow ratio at the end of NW growth. This new approach yielded samples with a high luminescence intensity, a narrow emission spectrum, and enhanced crystalline quality. Using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, the UIF NWs exhibited a long radiative recombination time (Ď„r) and low internal quantum efficiency (IQE) due to strong exciton localization and carrier trapping in defect states. In contrast, NWs with engineered In content demonstrated three times higher IQE and a much shorter Ď„r due to mitigated In fluctuation and improved crystal quality

GAS AND SOLID MIXING IN A THREE PARTITIONED FLUIDIZED BED

There are many gas-solid reaction systems which take place simultaneously in a single reactor, such as coal gasification. By splitting the reactions, high concentrated gases can be obtained without separation processes. Dual fluidized bed was proposed for this purpose. Similarly, simultaneous adsorption/desorption systems with dry sorbent for CO2 capture and the gasification reaction system with a char combustor and a gasifier separately were developed. For improving gas and solid mixing efficiencies of the dual fluidized beds, a hitherto unknown partitioned fluidized bed (PFB) is proposed. A basic concept of PFB is that lower parts between two separated fluidized beds are linked (opened), whereas upper parts are blocked by walls. Solid mixing occurs in lower parts with preventing gas mixing. The solid residence time becomes longer than that of dual fluidized bed and the high conversion of solid can be obtained. In this study, the gas and the solid mixing behaviors were investigated in three partitioned fluidized beds (left, center and right). The size of each fluidized bed is 7 cm (w) X 7 cm (d) X 30 cm (h) and partitioned above the 7 cm of distributor. Air and CO2-air mixture were used as fluidizing gas in each partitioned fluidized bed. For the gas mixing experiments, glass bead particles with 150 micron and density of 2.5g/cm3 were introduced. Outlet gas concentrations of each fluidized bed were analyzed by IR and then the gas exchanges between the reactors were calculated. For the solid mixing experiments, the polypropylene particles with 1000 micron and the density of 0.883 g/cm3 were continuously fed into the reactor. The gas mixing percentages were 0.4 ~ 16.0% of input gas amounts with varying gas velocities. The solid discharge rates in center and right side can be controlled by operating conditions

Structural safety inspection of reinforced concrete structures considering failure probabilities of structural members

Regular safety inspections of existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures are required according to the regulations and criteria set by each country. In South Korea, the safety inspection regulations provided by the Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation (KISTEC) are followed. These regulations were developed based on fuzzy theory to avoid subjective decisions, and provide standardized deterioration grades for member types, floors, and the entire structure. However, the safety inspection regulation by the KISTEC often provides unconservative evaluation results. In particular, as the importance factors of beam and slab members are set lower than those of other members, there are cases in which deteriorations occurring in beams and slabs are not properly reflected in the floor level evaluation. In this study, to overcome such limitations, case studies were carried out and modified importance factors for structural member types were proposed considering the failure probabilities of each member type based on the reliability theory. The importance modification factor was calculated based on the strength ratio of structural members so that the more dangerous the members are, the more impact they give on the evaluation. Overall, compared to the KISTEC method, the proposed method provided conservative but practical assessment results, and it was found that the proposed importance factors can be very useful to properly reflect the effects of damaged members on the deterioration status evaluation of the floors and the entire structure

Echo Path Transfer Function Estimation for Spectral Subtraction-based Acoustic Echo Suppression

    Get PDF
In this study, we propose a novel technique for spectral subtraction (SS)-based acoustic echo suppression (AES). Conventional AES methods based on SS apply fixed weights to the estimated echo path transfer function (EPTF) at the current signal segment and to the EPTF estimated until the previous time interval. We propose a new EPTF estimation approach that adaptively updates the weight parameters in response to abrupt changes in the acoustic environment. From the experiments, we conclude that the developed techniques can be successfully used for the SS-based AES systems
