Alienated and Persosnal Knowledge: An Analysis of Scholarly Models

    Get PDF
This article considers the idea of knowledge from the basis of Western and Classical Chinese models of knowledge transmission. The transformation of understanding “what is the knowledge” was revealed through emphasizing the milestones in the history of Western philosophy. The result of such analysis is formalized as the concept of “Alienated” knowledge. Advantages, limitations and the effects on the structure of society of this model were reviewed. The alternative approach that used to be found in Oriental cultures was examined on the material of the Classical Chinese system of tuition. Its essence was embodied as the concept of “Personal” knowledge. This paper pays attention to actual questions of human body and mind improvement and transformation, exposes the foundation of this process in the historical development of thought and compares mutually exclusive ways of further evolution of humanity

Synthesis and characterization of nanometric titania coated on granular alumina for arsenic removal

The adsorption process is widely used for the treatment of drinking water sources containing high levels of arsenic. The choice of the adsorbent is crucial for the efficiency of the process. Very good performances were obtained in the past by activated alumina, while more recent studies have shown that also other media such as titanium oxide can provide high removal rates. In the present work, four types of adsorbents were tested for their removal capability of pentavalent arsenic from liquid solutions. Specifically, it was investigated if modifications of activated alumina by coating with titanium oxide nanoparticles or by reducing particle size might improve their performance. The adsorbents were firstly characterized by X-ray diffraction, BET specific area measurement and SEM analysis. Then, kinetics, equilibrium isotherm experiments were conducted in batch mode at fixed pH. All the tested adsorbents showed satisfactory arsenic removal, with the best performance obtained by the mesoporous gamma-alumina which had the lowest grain size. The titanium coating did not appear to significantly improve adsorption capacity. The kinetic data were best fitted by the pseudo-second order model, while both the Freundlich and the Langmuir equations well represented the adsorption isotherm data

Some results of long-term variability of avalanche activity of CIS mountains

The work present the analysis of the long variation of avalanche activity of former USSR (CIS) mountains by the data of regular observations. There were determined the periods of activigation and reduction of avalanche formation with different synchronization of separate groups of regions. The common territorial time curves of the avalanche activity were derive for 11 of 13 mountains areas of CIS being analyzed. For Tien Shan and Caucasus the generel tendencies of the long-term variation of avalanche formation was differentiated in more details. For some regions the relationship is established between the avalanche formation and climatic factors (air temperature, winter precipitation). The tendency to the avalanche activity decrease on the course of the last few years, revealed on the basis of the analysis is testified by the independent observational data

Coupling of whispering-gallery modes in size-mismatched microdisk photonic molecules

Mechanisms of whispering-gallery (WG) modes coupling in microdisk photonic molecules (PMs) with slight and significant size mismatch are numerically investigated. The results reveal two different scenarios of modes interaction depending on the degree of this mismatch and offer new insight into how PM parameters can be tuned to control and modify WG-modes wavelengths and Q-factors. From a practical point of view, these findings offer a way to fabricate PM microlaser structures that exhibit low thresholds and directional emission, and at the same time are more tolerant to fabrication errors than previously explored coupled-cavity structures composed of identical microresonators.Comment: 3 pages with 5 figures (to appear in Opt. Analysis of mechanisms for hardening constructional steels by structure parameters

Contribution of different hardening mechanisms into tensile strength of carbon and low alloy steels has been evaluated on the basis of analysis of research papers and own experimental studies. It has been found out that solid solution and grain boundary strengthening provide the most contribution to tensile strength of normalized steel, whereas in structural low alloy steel low alloy steel the role of dispersion strengthening is noticed (21,4 %) along with the above strengthening components. It has been shown that thermal and chemical treatment of St5 grade steel leads to around 27,6 % growth of dislocations strengthening in rolled steel in case of accelerated cooling of hot wrought austenite

A very convenient setup to generate intense VUV coherent light at 125 nm with use of nonlinear effects in mercury vapor at room temperature

    No full text
Using only one dye laser, efficient generation of VUV radiation (10^13 photons/pulse) is demonstrated at 125.140 nm and 125.053 nm by four-wave sum-frequency mixing in a room-temperature mercury vapor. The emission at 125.053 nm, which is out of two-photon resonance but near three-photon resonance, has been observed for the first time and is carefully analyzed. In particular, numerical calculations have been carried out for gaussian pump beams taking into account absorption of VUV photons and optical Kerr effect. The results of the calculations reproduce the VUV emission lineshape and power saturation effects measured in the experiment
