Effects of scale in predicting global structural response
Analytical techniques for scale-up effects were reviewed. The advantages and limitations of applying the principles of similitude to composite structures is summarized and illustrated by simple examples. An analytical procedure was formulated to design scale models of an axially compressed composite cylinder. A building-block approach was outlined where each structural detail is analyzed independently and the probable failure sequence of a selected component is predicted, taking into account load redistribution subsequent to first element failure. Superconducting gap variations induced by structural supermodulation in BSCCO
We discuss the possibility that the strain field introduced by the structural
supermodulation in Bi-2212 and certain other cuprate materials may modulate the
superconducting pairing interaction. We calculate the amplitude of this effect,
visible in scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, and thereby relate a
change in the local superconducting gap with the change in the local dopant
displacements induced by the supermodulation. In principle, since this
modulation is periodic, sufficiently accurate x-ray measurements or ab initio
calculations should enable one to determine which atomic displacements enhance
pairing and therefore T_c.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
The JPL telerobot operator control station. Part 2: Software
The Operator Control Station of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)/NASA Telerobot Demonstrator System provides the man-machine interface between the operator and the system. It provides all the hardware and software for accepting human input for the direct and indirect (supervised) manipulation of the robot arms and tools for task execution. Hardware and software are also provided for the display and feedback of information and control data for the operator's consumption and interaction with the task being executed. Temporal Changes in a Tropical Nekton Assemblage and Performance of a Prawn Selective Gear
The temporal variation of components of a moderately diverse (H=1.46) tropical estuarine fish assemblage (long. 146°30'E, lat. 8°45'S) was directed by salinities that had been determined by local oceanographic and probably topographic conditions. For this assemblage, two types of intrayear component profiles are predicted. Pooled data (1988-91) reveal a large component of regular/resident species (43%) in an assemblage which has been under a narrow temperature regime «5T). These results facilitate a discussion on the relevance and usefulness of three hypotheses often cited in studies concerning species diversity and component characteristics of the subtropical/tropical coastal nonreef fish assemblages.
Manifestations of the assemblage are reflected in catch composition and weights of 39 trials conducted for a selective prawning gear whose performance in bycatch reduction, mainly for finfishes, is judged by an index, E, we have previously proposed. This gear is capable of harvesting the prawn while conserving the demersal fish. Behavioral responses to netting of the prawns and the finfishes, especially the nearshore surface schoolers such as leiognathids, are discussed from several points of view. An adaptation in terms of group selection for leiognathids of their locking mechanism of median fin spines has been interpreted. For the purpose of bycatch reduction or E enhancement, suggestions for improvements in net design and trawl configuration by considering the behavioral features of fish are made. Our original formula of E is modified for general use.
Bycatch problems in the regional prawn fisheries and their possible impacts on fishery planning and development in Papua New Guinea as a developing country are discussed. The gear tested may offer enormous ecological and economic benefits. The gear is multipurpose, extremely simple, and can also be used as a biological sampler
Phase Coexistence Near a Morphotropic Phase Boundary in Sm-doped BiFeO3 Films
We have investigated heteroepitaxial films of Sm-doped BiFeO3 with a
Sm-concentration near a morphotropic phase boundary. Our high-resolution
synchrotron X-ray diffraction, carried out in a temperature range of 25C to
700C, reveals substantial phase coexistence as one changes temperature to
crossover from a low-temperature PbZrO3-like phase to a high-temperature
orthorhombic phase. We also examine changes due to strain for films greater or
less than the critical thickness for misfit dislocation formation.
Particularly, we note that thicker films exhibit a substantial volume collapse
associated with the structural transition that is suppressed in strained thin
films

A 3-D Track-Finding Processor for the CMS Level-1 Muon Trigger
We report on the design and test results of a prototype processor for the CMS
Level-1 trigger that performs 3-D track reconstruction and measurement from
data recorded by the cathode strip chambers of the endcap muon system. The
tracking algorithms are written in C++ using a class library we developed that
facilitates automatic conversion to Verilog. The code is synthesized into
firmware for field-programmable gate-arrays from the Xilinx Virtex-II series. A
second-generation prototype has been developed and is currently under test. It
performs regional track-finding in a 60 degree azimuthal sector and accepts 3
GB/s of input data synchronously with the 40 MHz beam crossing frequency. The
latency of the track-finding algorithms is expected to be 250 ns, including
geometrical alignment correction of incoming track segments and a final
momentum assignment based on the muon trajectory in the non-uniform magnetic
