    Variations of the cephalic vein anterior to the clavicle in humans

    Background: Clinicians should understand that jugulocephalic vein (JCV) variants may be occasionally found. This study aims to classify JCV variants and obtain their frequency.   Materials and methods: We investigated anatomical variants of the cephalic vein in 55 human cadavers during a gross anatomy course at our medical school.   Results: The percentage of JCVs that pass through the anterior part of the clavicle and anastomose to the jugular vein as per previous studies and our study was 2–5%. Five cases with anastomosis between the cephalic and external jugular veins that pass through the anterior part of the clavicle were found. The courses were classified into 1A, 1B, 2A, and 2B. Type 1 extends beyond the clavicle and anastomoses with the external jugular vein. Type 2 follows the same course as type 1, but anastomoses with the subclavian vein. Subtype A does not have a branch that anastomoses with the axillary vein, whereas subtype B does. We encountered two cases of type 1A and three of type 1B.   Conclusions: Four anatomical variants of the cephalic vein around the clavicle were identified. Clinicians’ knowledge of these variants is expected to decrease possible complications if venous access via the cephalic vein is needed

    Overconfidence is universal? Elicitation of genuine overconfidence (EGO) procedure reveals systematic differences across domain, task knowledge, and incentives in four populations

    Overconfidence is sometimes assumed to be a human universal, but there remains a dearth of data systematically measuring overconfidence across populations and contexts. Moreover, cross-cultural experiments often fail to distinguish between placement and precision and worse still, often compare population-mean placement estimates rather than individual performance subtracted from placement. Here we introduce a procedure for concurrently capturing both placement and precision at an individual level based on individual performance: The Elicitation of Genuine Overconfidence (EGO) procedure. We conducted experiments using the EGO procedure, manipulating domain, task knowledge, and incentives across four populations—Japanese, Hong Kong Chinese, Euro Canadians, and East Asian Canadians. We find that previous measures of population-level overconfidence may have been misleading; rather than universal, overconfidence is highly context dependent. Our results reveal cross-cultural differences in sensitivity to incentives and differences in overconfidence strategies, with underconfidence, accuracy, and overconfidence. Comparing sexes, we find inconsistent results for overplacement, but that males are consistently more confident in their placement. These findings have implications for our understanding of the adaptive value of overconfidence and its role in explaining population-level and individual-level differences in economic and psychological behavior

    Constraints on flavour-dependent long-range forces from atmospheric neutrino observations at Super-Kamiokande

    In the minimal standard model it is possible to gauge any one of the following global symmetries in an anomaly free way: (i)LeLμL_{e}-L_{\mu}, (ii) LeLτL_{e}-L_{\tau} or (iii) LμLτL_{\mu}-L_{\tau}. If the gauge boson corresponding to (i) or (ii) is (nearly) massless then it will show up as a long range composition dependent fifth force between macroscopic objects. Such a force will also influence neutrino oscillations due to its flavour-dependence. We show that the latter effect is quite significant in spite of very strong constraints on the relevant gauge couplings from the fifth force experiments. In particular, the LeLμ,τL_{e}- L_{\mu,\tau} potential of the electrons in the Sun and the earth is shown to suppress the atmospheric neutrino νμντ\nu_\mu \to \nu_\tau oscillations which have been observed at Super-Kamiokande. The Super-K data of oscillation of multi-GeV atmospheric neutrinos can be used to put an upper bound on coupling αeτ<6.4×1052\alpha_{e\tau}< 6.4 \times 10^{-52} and αeμ<5.5×1052\alpha_{e\mu}< 5.5 \times 10^{-52}at 90% CL when the range of the force is the earth-sun distance. This is an improvement by two orders on the earlier fifth force bounds in this range.Comment: 5 pages Latex, 3 figure

    [Aim]: Caffeine activates 5′AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a signalling intermediary implicated in the regulation of glucose, lipid and energy metabolism in skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle expresses two catalytic α subunits of AMPK, α1 and α2, but the isoform specificity of caffeine-induced AMPK activation is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine which α isoform is preferentially activated by caffeine in vitroand in vivo using rat skeletal muscle. [Methods]: Rat epitrochlearis muscle was isolated and incubated in vitro in the absence or presence of caffeine. In another experiment, the muscle was dissected after intravenous injection of caffeine. Isoform-specific AMPK activity, the phosphorylation status of AMPKα Thr172 and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) Ser79, the concentrations of ATP, phosphocreatine (PCr) and glycogen, and 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3MG) transport activity were estimated. [Results]: Incubation of isolated epitrochlearis muscle with 1 mM of caffeine for 15 min increased AMPKα1 activity, but not AMPKα2 activity; concentrations of ATP, PCr and glycogen were not affected. Incubation with 3 mM of caffeine activated AMPKα2 and reduced PCr and glycogen concentrations. Incubation with 1 mM of caffeine increased the phosphorylation of AMPK and ACC and enhanced 3MG transport. Intravenous injection of caffeine (5 mg kg−1) predominantly activated AMPKα1 and increased 3MG transport without affecting energy status. [Conclusion]: Our results suggest that of the two α isoforms of AMPK, AMPKα1 is predominantly activated by caffeine via an energy-independent mechanism and that the activation of AMPKα1 increases glucose transport and ACC phosphorylation in skeletal muscle

    Evidence for Surface Andreev Bound states in Cuprate Superconductors from Penetration Depth Measurements

    Tunneling and theoretical studies have suggested that Andreev bound states form at certain surfaces of unconventional superconductors. Through studies of the temperature and field dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth lambda_ab at low temperature, we have found strong evidence for the presence of these states in clean single crystal YBCO and BSCCO. Crystals cut to expose a [110] interface show a strong upturn in lambda_ab at around 7K, when the field is oriented so that the supercurrents flow around this surface. In YBCO this upturn is completely suppressed by a field of ~0.1 T.Comment: 4 pages 2 column revtex + 4 postscript figures. Submitted to PR

    Josephson Plasma Resonance in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+yBi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+y} with Spatially Dependent Interlayer-Phase Coherence

    We study the Josephson plasma resonance (JPR) in Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+y_{8+y} (BSCCO) with spatially dependent interlayer-phase coherence (IPC). The half-irradiated BSCCO (HI-BSCCO), in which columnar defects are introduced only in a half of the sample, shows several resonance peaks, which are not simple superposition of the peaks in irradiated- and pristine-parts. JPR in HI-BSCCO changes its character from irradiated- to pristine-type at a crossover frequency (ωcr\omega_{cr}). We demonstrate that the one-dimensional \LSGE, which takes into account the spatial dependence of IPC, can reproduce most of the experimental findings including the presence of ωcr\omega_{cr}.Comment: 4 figure

    Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al

    Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al (I =5/2+, T_1/2 = 644(25) ms) has been measured by means of the beta-NMR spectroscopy using a spin-polarized 31Al beam produced in the projectile fragmentation reaction. The obtained Q moment, |Q_exp(31Al)| = 112(32)emb, are in agreement with conventional shell model calculations within the sd valence space. Previous result on the magnetic moment also supports the validity of the sd model in this isotope, and thus it is concluded that 31Al is located outside of the island of inversion.Comment: 5 page
