    Aromatic cyclotriphosphazenes

    Get PDF
Four-Aminophenoxy cyclotriphosphazenes are reacted with maleic anhydride to produce maleamic acids which are converted to the maleimides. The maleimides are polymerized. By selection of starting materials (e.g., hexakis amino or trisaminophenoxy trisphenoxy cyclotrisphosphazenes), selection of molar porportions of reactants, use of mixtures of anhydrides and use of dianhydrides as bridging groups a variety of maleimides and polymers are produced. The polymers have high limiting oxygen indices, high char yields and other useful heat and fire resistant properties making them useful as, for example, impregnants of fabrics

The global adoption of Industralised Building System (IBS) : lessons learned

    Get PDF
Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) is typically used interchangeably with other terms such as prefabrication, offsite manufacturing, offsite construction, and modern method of construction (MMC), industrialised building and industrialised construction. Nevertheless, the term modern method of construction (MMC) has been used to collectively describe both offsite-based construction technologies and innovative onsite technologies in the United Kingdom. It is evident that there exist a wide range of contextual issues which stems from the definition of these terminologies. However, lack of previous research has explored the relationship between these terminologies. Therefore, this paper emphasises the contrasting concepts of IBS and MMC, and concludes that ill-defining the MMC-IBS terms leads to misunderstanding, uncertainty and prejudice of the IBS concept and its benefits besides the adoption of IBS in global, which will be detrimental to efforts promoting the use of IBS in the construction industry

Germinomas are malignant tumors arising from primitive germ cells. They may be solitary or multiple and can be situated along the midline structures or in other intracranial regions. We report on one case of multiple intracranial germinoma. A 38 year-old male patient presented with signs of increased intracranial pressure and bilateral dimunition of visual acuity. A brain MRI showed multiple lesions at the level of the pineal region, the suprasellar region and in the right pontocerebellar angle. Tumor markers were positive. He underwent radiation therapy and chemotherapy with good recovery. To the best of our knowledge no similar case was described in the African literature before

A fractional fuel consumption saving as well as pollution cuts will be a thinking pattern or a key concern in modern ship designs. Recent advances in technology for solar cells and photovoltaic (PV) modules have resulted in solar power being a cost-effective fuel reduction alternative for this objective. This paper is intended to provide a hybrid solar diesel power system for short-run ferries. This work proposes and emphasizes the energy efficiency, cost efficiency and minimal environmental impact of hybrid-powered ferries with solar diesel. The proposed system has been studied on the example of passenger-car ferry connecting the two banks of the Suez Canal at Port Said city - Egypt. Economic and environmental analyses have been conducted to determine and measure the advantages of the proposed system. The results show an economically viable and environmentally sustainable system if it were treated as a long-term investment. Compared to the equivalent diesel generator system, this system reduces exhaust emissions by about 375 tonnes per year. The fuel cost savings achieved are also significant

© The Author(s) 2020. A covalent functionalization approach was utilized for the preparation of highly dispersed pentaethylene glycol-thermally treated graphene-water as the absorbing material inside a flat-plate solar collector. Four mass fractions of nanofluids were prepared (0.025, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1 wt% pentaethylene glycol-thermally treated graphene-water). Graphene nanoparticles were characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis with a scanning electron microscope. Measurements of the thermophysical properties were subsequently carried out for the nanosuspensions. The raw investigation data were collected from an indoor flat-plate solar collector test setup. The experimental procedure included different sets of variables such as input temperatures of 303, 313, and 323 K; fluid mass flow rate of 0.00833, 0.01667, and 0.025 kg s−1; and heat flow density of 500, 750, and 1000 W m−2. The thermophysical tests of pentaethylene glycol-thermally treated graphene-water nanofluids showed a proportional increase against weight concentrations, while the specific heat power was reduced. The tests showed an increment in energy efficiency by increasing the fluid mass flow rate and heat input. By comparison, the thermal efficiency decreased with the increasing temperature of the fluid supply. Relative to the base fluid, the energy efficiency of pentaethylene glycol-thermally treated graphene/water-based flat-plate solar collector increased to 10.6%, 11%, and 13.1% at the three fluid mass flow rates. In conclusion, an exponential form was used to derive the thermal effectiveness of flat-plate solar collector based on the experimental data

This study investigates the effect of operating variables and influence of milk of lime (MOL) conditions in PCC using a modified reactor. The variables includes: Ca(OH)2 feed concentration at 0.5 M–2.0 M and CO2 flow rates at 224.0 mL min–1 and 379.5mLmin–1, on the particle morphology and size in the gas–liquid route precipitation. The particle morphology and texture as well as the chemical content were sufficiently authenticated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforminfrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Experimental data show that lower concentration (<1.0 M) favoured the formation of rhombohedra calcite crystals with the particle size below 100 nm. However, increase in concentration and gas flow rate yielded a coarser crystal particles. Two polymorphs were produced at1Mreactant, i.e. rhombohedra calcite with CO2 flow rate of 224 mL min–1 and prismatic calcite at 380 mL min–1. Molarities higher than 1 M yielded a coarser prismatic crystals, and also has a tendency to crystallize into scalenohedron species especially with higher reactant concentration. Keywords: Milk of lime, precipitated calcium carbonate, morphology, particle size, carbonatio
