THE STRUCTURING OF SÃO PAULO CITY FROM THE ROADS AND RAILS (1867-1930)

This article presents a proposal for using digital cartography applied to the comparative analysis of a series of 13 historical maps of São Paulo city. The analysis sought to establish links between the rail transport infrastructure and the process of structuring the city of São Paulo between 1870 and 1930. Therefore, we produced thematic maps from a selection of historical maps of the city and the following were identified: urban sprawl, existing neighborhoods, planned housing developments, paths design, railways and streetcars. It proved to be a practical way for digital cartography to be supported by Geographic Information Systems made more agile for handling, visualization and overlapping information in different historical maps, facilitating the comparative analysis process of the structuring role of paths and trails in the formation of the urban area, the work hypothesis verified at the end of the article

The role of rail in the territorial structure of the city of São Paulo from 1867 to 1930

Os mapas da cidade de São Paulo, produzidos no período compreendido entre o final do século XIX e meados do século XX, revelam uma cidade em plena transformação e desenvolvimento, com aumento dos seus limites através das obras de infraestrutura, como linha férrea e de bondes, implantação dos sistemas de distribuição de água e principalmente, energia elétrica, além da construção de novas pontes, loteamentos e arruamentos de chácaras, abertura de ruas, avenidas e praças. A influência dos trilhos (trens e bondes) na estruturação territorial da cidade de São Paulo foi avaliada através da análise de mapas históricos e auxiliada pela cartografia digital. Atualmente, com os recursos técnicos disponíveis, os mapas históricos podem ser estudados de forma sistematizada buscando-se obter uma visão de conjunto a respeito das transformações no espaço geográfico ao longo do tempo. A cartografia digital, apoiada nos softwares de Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG), representa essa possibilidade oferecendo recursos para armazenamento, manipulação, e visualização dos dados geográficos.The maps of the city of São Paulo produced within period from the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth century, reveal a city undergoing transformation and development, increasing the limits of the urban through infrastructure works such as railway and trams, implementation of water distribution systems and especially electricity, in addition to building new bridges, roads and subdivisions of small farms, open streets, avenues and squares. The influence of the rails (trains and trams) in the territorial structure of the city of São Paulo was evaluated through analysis of historical maps and assisted by digital mapping. Currently, with the available technical resources, historical maps can be studied in a systematic way seeking to get an overview about the changes in geographical space over time. The digital cartography supported by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software provides resources for storage, manipulation, and visualization of geographic data

Geography and tourism\' s cartography

A cartografia do turismo faz parte do conjunto de representações gráficas que compõem a cartografia temática. O presente estudo, inserido no contexto da cartografia temática, tem como objetivo elaborar uma proposta cartográfica para o turismo. Para a elaboração de tal proposta, foi resgatada a evolução do saber tanto da geografia quanto da cartografia. Tal tarefa possibilitou uma compreensão do papel da cartografia nas representações turísticas. Em um segundo momento, dez mapas turísticos foram analisados, demonstrando-se as várias formas de representação do turismo em mapas, e a acessibilidade desses mapas mundialmente conhecidos. A última etapa da investigação apresenta um estudo de caso do município de São Bento do Sapucaí SP; há uma caracterização do município explorando os aspectos sociais e naturais relacionados ao turismo. O estudo de caso associado aos fundamentos teóricos-metodológicos apresentados no 1° capítulo da dissertação possibilitou a elaboração de um mapa das unidades de potencial turístico para o município de São Bento do Sapucaí. Tal mapa expressa o raciocínio de síntese elucubrado ao longo do processo investigativo.The cartography of the tourism is part of the set of graphic representations that compose the thematic cartography. The present study, inserted in the context of the thematic cartography, it has as objective to elaborate a proposal for tourism cartography. For the elaboration of such proposal, the evolution of knowing in such a way of the geography how much of the cartography was rescued. Such task made possible an understanding of the cartography role in the tourist representations. At as a moment, ten tourist maps had been analyzed, demonstrating the some forms of representation of the tourism in maps, and the accessibility of these world-wide known maps. The last stage of the inquiry presents a study of case of the São Bento do Sapucaí - SP city; it has a characterization of the city exploring related the social and natural aspects to the tourism. The study of case associated with beddings theoretical-methodological presented in first chapter of the dissertation made possible the elaboration of a touristic potential units map for the São Bento do Sapucaí city. Such express map the reasoning of synthesis thought throughout the investigative process
