"To infinity and beyond!" : a genre-specific film analysis of movie success mechanisms

The objective of this study is the analysis of movie success mechanisms in a genre-specific context. Instead of the examination of all time box office champions, we focus on the two film genres of computer animated and comic book based films. By introducing the concept of the motion-picture marketing mix, which represents a set of tactical marketing tools in order to strengthen a companys strategic customer orientation, we are able to systematically identify key movie success factors. We conduct a cross-sectional empirical analysis across regional distinctions based on dataset that covers a time horizon of more than 30 years. We find empirical evidence that actors with ex ante popularity, award nominations and the production budget represent key movie success mechanisms and significantly influence a movies commercial appeal. Additionally, word-of-mouth creates reputation effects that also significantly affects box office gross.Daniel Kaimann, University of Paderbor

“I will survive”: online streaming and the chart survival of music tracks

Digital streaming has had a profound effect on the commercial music sector and now accounts for 80% of industry revenues in the United States. This study investigates the consumption of music on digital streaming platforms by analyzing the factors affecting the chart survival of individual music tracks. Our data are taken from the Spotify Global Top 200 between January 2017 and January 2020, containing observations on 3,007 unique tracks by 642 artists over 1,087 days. We identify a number of unique consumption traits applicable to online streaming services, which we use to explain variations in chart longevity. We find a positive association between the amount of time a track spends in the chart and the involvement of a major label. We also find that the level of competition from other chart entries, as well as some elements related to the pattern of diffusion, associates significantly with the likelihood of chart survival. The study highlights several important managerial implications for key industry stakeholders

A duration model analysis of consumer preferences and determinants of video game consumption

Despite the enormous revenues generated by the video game industry in recent years, relatively little research has been undertaken into consumer preferences and the determinants of video game consumption. This study addresses this deficiency through the analysis of data from a popular online video game that includes historic behavioural information for 1,408 consumers participating in 728,811 unique rounds of gameplay. We analyse these data with the goal of estimating determinants of the aggregate amount of time that a consumer spends playing the game. Through the estimation of duration models, we show that less experienced consumers are less likely to continue playing the game at any given point, possibly due to having achieved mastery and becoming bored. However, we also find that consumers tend to play the game for longer periods when using a wider range of character roles and vehicles, implying that a consumer's interest can be maintained through exposure to greater variety. Our results represent the first such evidence on in-game consumer preferences, which has important implications for video game consumption through optimisation of gameplay experiences to satisfy these preferences

Movie success in a genre specific contest: Evidence from the US film industry

This article examines the economic effect of computer animation movie success by using data from all widely released feature length movies between 2011 and 2014, and all computer animated movies in North America between 1995 and 2014. We show that computer animated movies successfully attract families, parents, children, and teenagers and outperform other major movie genres (e.g., action, com-edy or drama). This research sample also provides initial evidence that, counter to industry thinking in the film business, stardom is not directly associated with movie success

Xwalk: computing and visualizing distances in cross-linking experiments

Motivation: Chemical cross-linking of proteins or protein complexes and the mass spectrometry-based localization of the cross-linked amino acids in peptide sequences is a powerful method for generating distance restraints on the substrate's topology

A NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Fifty-one patients diagnosed by a neurologist as having Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and hospitalized for treatment of their condition were administered the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery (LNNB). The LNNB is a short comprehensive neuropsychological battery standardized and published in 1978 which has been found to be of value in diagnosing and providing rehabilitative recommendations for patients with neuropsychological damage. A majority of the patients were also rated on the Kurtzke Disability Scale, a neurological examination scoring each patient\u27s functioning in eight different neurological systems. Most of the patients also underwent computerized tomography (CT) scanning. The results indicated a characteristic pattern on the LNNB of impairment of motor and tactile skills, while visual skills evidenced soft signs of dysfunction. Cross-validation of Golden\u27s (1979) double discrimination scales for the diagnosis of MS indicates that these scales have little validity in the diagnosis of MS patients. Analysis of the effects of several disease-related and demographic variables on the performance of MS patients administered the LNNB indicated that patients with the remitting form of the disease, less definite diagnosis, shorter duration of disease, higher educational levels, and female gender evidenced less impairment on the LNNB. Comparison of the LNNB Clinical Scales with the Kurtzke Scales rated by the attending neurologist suggested that the results of the LNNB increasingly overlapped with the results of the Kurtzke Scales as systems higher in the CNS were evaluated. The high degree of overlap between the LNNB Motor Scale and the Kurtzke Mental Scale was interpreted as indicating that increasing impairment of motor functions was strongly associated with increasing mood and cognition alteration. Four of the LNNB Scales correlated significantly with all three scan measures. Of the three CT scan measures brain density shared the closest relationship with scores obtained on the LNNB. Increased brain density appeared associated with increased impairment on the LNNB
