    Real-time Perceptive Motion Control using Control Barrier Functions with Analytical Smoothing for Six-Wheeled-Telescopic-Legged Robot Tachyon 3

    To achieve safe legged locomotion, it is important to generate motion in real-time considering various constraints in robots and environments. In this study, we propose a lightweight real-time perspective motion control system for the newly developed six-wheeled-telescopic-legged robot, Tachyon 3. In the proposed method, analytically smoothed constraints including Smooth Separating Axis Theorem (Smooth SAT) as a novel higher order differentiable collision detection for 3D shapes is applied to the Control Barrier Function (CBF). The proposed system integrating the CBF achieves online motion generation in a short control cycle of 1 ms that satisfies joint limitations, environmental collision avoidance and safe convex foothold constraints. The efficiency of Smooth SAT is shown from the collision detection time of 1 us or less and the CBF constraint computation time for Tachyon3 of several us. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified through the stair-climbing motion, integrating online recognition in a simulation and a real machine.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication.     Radiological protection issues arising during and after the Fukushima nuclear reactor accident

    Memorandum\nFollowing the Fukushima accident, the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) convened a task group to compile lessons learned from the nuclear reactor accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, with respect to the ICRP system of radiological protection. In this memorandum the members of the task group express their personal views on issues arising during and after the accident, without explicit endorsement of or approval by the ICRP.\nWhile the affected people were largely protected against radiation exposure and no one incurred a lethal dose of radiation (or a dose sufficiently large to cause radiation sickness), many radiological protection questions were raised. The following issues were identified: inferring radiation risks (and the misunderstanding of nominal risk coefficients); attributing radiation effects from low dose exposures; quantifying radiation exposure; assessing the importance of internal exposures; managing emergency crises; protecting rescuers and volunteers; responding with medical aid; justifying necessary but disruptive protective actions; transiting from an emergency to an existing situation; rehabilitating evacuated areas; restricting individual doses of members of the public; caring for infants and children; categorising public exposures due to an accident; considering pregnant women and their foetuses and embryos; monitoring public protection; dealing with \u27contamination\u27 of territories, rubble and residues and consumer products; recognising the importance of psychological consequences; and fostering the sharing of information.\nRelevant ICRP Recommendations were scrutinised, lessons were collected and suggestions were compiled.\nIt was concluded that the radiological protection community has an ethical duty to learn from the lessons of Fukushima and resolve any identified challenges. Before another large accident occurs, it should be ensured that inter alia: radiation risk coefficients of potential health effects are properly interpreted; the limitations of epidemiological studies for attributing radiation effects following low exposures are understood; any confusion on protection quantities and units is resolved; the potential hazard from the intake of radionuclides into the body is elucidated; rescuers and volunteers are protected with an ad hoc system; clear recommendations on crisis management and medical care and on recovery and rehabilitation are available; recommendations on public protection levels (including infant, children and pregnant women and their expected offspring) and associated issues are consistent and understandable; updated recommendations on public monitoring policy are available; acceptable (or tolerable) \u27contamination\u27 levels are clearly stated and defined; strategies for mitigating the serious psychological consequences arising from radiological accidents are sought; and, last but not least, failures in fostering information sharing on radiological protection policy after an accident need to be addressed with recommendations to minimise such lapses in communication

    TYK2 Promoter Variant and Diabetes Mellitus in the Japanese

    Background: Recently, natural mutation of Tyrosine kinase 2 (Tyk2) gene has been shown to determine susceptibility to murine virus-induced diabetes. In addition, a previous human genome-wide study suggested the type 1 diabetes (T1D) susceptibility region to be 19p13, where the human TYK2 gene is located (19p13.2). Methods: Polymorphisms of TYK2 gene at the promoter region and exons were studied among 331 healthy controls, and 302 patients with T1D and 314 with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the Japanese. Findings: A TYK2 promoter haplotype with multiple genetic polymorphisms, which are in complete linkage disequilibrium, named TYK2 promoter variant, presenting decreased promoter activity, is associated with an increased risk of not only T1D (odds ratio (OR), 2.4; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.2 to 4.6; P = 0.01), but also T2D (OR, 2.1; 95% CI, 1.1 to 4.1; P = 0.03). The risk is high in patients with T1D associated with flu-like syndrome at diabetes onset and also those without anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibody. Interpretation: The TYK2 promoter variant is associated with an overall risk for diabetes, serving a good candidate as a virus-induced diabetes susceptibility gene in humans.
