This study aims to explain the phenomenon of blockchain technology in business model innovation in the public ecosystem since it offers huge potential benefits for business activities to overcome existing problems, such as data ownership, security, and accessibility. This study uses the realism perspective for understanding the phenomenon. The multiple-case study strategy presents five blockchain experts who use the value system framework to find potential for public blockchain applications. The study finds that in the public blockchain ecosystem: (i) value capture is oriented to enlarge new potential income; (ii) value creation is carried out through partnerships with other entities; (iii) value delivery is delivered through decentralized application and smart contracts; and (iv) value propositions help to solve public problems. From the findings, this study proposes three types of added value. First, low value-added, i.e., blockchain exchange data/information exchange and security; second, medium value-added, wherein technology initiates collaboration performance among entities in the public ecosystem; and finally, high value-added, i.e., a blockchain encourages new market innovation. This study focuses on the literature on blockchain and business models as well as potential future research

Blockchain brings changes and disruptions to the existing business models and therefore deserves further analysis. Accordingly, this study aims to explain the phenomenon of blockchain technology in the business model innovation in the enterprise ecosystem. Empirically, numerous studies have shown that blockchain technology improves organizational performance. This study uses a value system framework to explain the enterprise blockchain phenomenon. Through abductive reasoning, this study uses a multiple-case study to answer the research questions. In sum, this study finds that blockchain technology delivers benefits to organizations in: (i) value capture through increased profitability; (ii) value creation through private partnership; (iii) value delivery through smart contracts; and (iv) value proposition that encourages improving the existing value proposition through operational improvements. Besides, the study also proposes the different types of enterprise blockchain ecosystems: private and consortium. The private ecosystem focuses on improving organizational performance through competition. In contrast, the consortium ecosystem focuses on  business value collaboration

A Different Magnitude of SME Business Model Innovation: A Lesson From The Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected SME businesses and forced them to respond to the situation. Business model innovation (BMI) is considered as a suitable choice of innovation mode for the sustainability of SMEs. The change in the business model (BM) in SMEs varies among organizations. Therefore, this study attempts to further explain the changes in BM for SMEs during the pandemic. Through this research, the understanding of BMI is expected to increase substantially, especially in the context of SMEs. The study performed a qualitative approach through multiple case studies to analyse the information and obtain factual findings to understand this phenomenon. Eight cases with different backgrounds were submitted and interviewed through semi-structured online interviews to obtain information about the BMI in SMEs. The findings show that although SMEs intervene through BM changes, the changes adjust to SMEs’ internal and external situations. In other cases, BM changes only focus on several sub-value systems (value capture, value creation, or value proposition). In certain other cases, SMEs were forced to radically change their value systems due to the extreme impact of the pandemic on their businesses and environment. This study conceptualizes BM changes in SMEs, as classified into type 1, type 2, type 3, and type 4, arranged based on the level of complexity (x-axis) and novelty of change (y-axis). The model can be justified through eight cases in this study. This study contributes to the scientific development of BM/BMI and justifies changes in BM empirically. For practitioners, this study clearly defines the direction of changing BMs in extreme situation. Keywords: BMI, multiple case studies, different magnitude, pandemic, SME

Besides working as a farmer, Mrs. Sutinah has run a business selling rengginang (a form of traditional rice cakes, popular as snacks and crisps as a side dish for main meals) since 2012. Mrs. Sutinah can be said to be the pioneer in the rengginang business around her village, Babakan Mulya, in the city of Kuningan, West Java. Nevertheless, in recent years, Mrs. Sutinah has been facing some challenges due to the emergence of competitors who offer a lower price than that of Mrs. Sutinah’s rengginang. This condition demotivates Mrs. Sutinah from developing her business because many people in the Babakan Mulya village prefer cheap rengginang, regardless of its quality. The purpose of this activity is to help develop Mrs. Sutinah’s rengginang business through three stages: pre-business mentoring, businessmentoring, and post-business mentoring. In the first stage of pre-mentorship, the community service team conducted interviews and field observations to identify the problems faced by Mrs. Sutinah’s business. The second stage involves direct mentorship given to Mrs. Sutinah, who can learn by directly implementing the concepts taught by the team to increase the competitive advantage of her products. In the final stage of post-mentorship, the team monitors and evaluates the success of the business and the actual implementation of the lessons given to Mrs. Sutinah. The pre-mentorship was conducted in one week, followed by the mentor’s accompaniment completed in four weeks. Meanwhile, monitoring and evaluation of Mrs. Sutinah’s engagement and implementation of the gained knowledge and skills were conducted periodically in the next four months after the mentorship ended. The outcomes revealed that the development and sustainability of micro entrepreneur need intensive mentorship, particularly by involving academia to ensure that the knowledge and skill transfer would be effective and consistently implement what they have learne
