Informants in Organizational Marketing Research
Organizational research frequently involves seeking judgmental data from multiple informants within organizations. Researchers are often faced with determining how many informants to survey, who those informants should be and (if more than one) how best to aggregate responses when disagreement exists between those responses. Using both recall and forecasting data from a laboratory study involving the MARKSTRAT simulation, we show that when there are multiple respondents who disagree, responses aggregated using confidence-based or competence-based weights outperform those with data-based weights, which in turn provide significant gains in estimation accuracy over simply averaging respondent reports. We then illustrate how these results can be used to determine the best number of respondents for a market research task as well as to provide an effective screening mechanism when seeking a single, best informant.screening;marketing research;aggregation;organizational research;survey research
The Impact of Channel Function Performance on Buyer-Seller Relationships in Marketing Channels
Distributors, across sectors and countries, are faced by the threat of disintermediation. In many industries, horizontal consolidation and advances in information technology have made it easier for manufacturers to bypass distributors and do business directly with consumers. Distributors have responded to this threat or other destructive acts in a number of different ways that can be represented through Hirschman's (1970) Exit-Voice-Loyalty framework. One additional response that distributors frequently adopt is developing countervailing power through dependence-balancing actions. These actions are designed to strengthen bonds with customers and often manifest themselves in the provision of improved channel services to customers. Does this strategy work? We seek to address this in our paper. Specifically, we examine the nature and magnitude of the direct and interactive effects of (a) the performance of marketing functions and services by a distributor and (b) the dependence structure of its relationship with its customers on different dimensions of relationship quality - satisfaction, trust, commitment and conflict. Of particular interest to us is the effect of functional performance on relationship quality in situations characterized by high relative dependence of the distributor on the customer - this closely approximates the situation that many distributors, faced by the threat of disintermediation, find themselves in. Hepatoblastoma in an Adult with Biliary Obstruction and Associated Portal Venous Thrombosis
We present a case of adult hepatoblastoma. This young female presented with severe acute
cholangitis. Preoperative diagnosis was common bile duct (CBD) obstruction with portal vein
thrombosis. On exploration she had a tumor mass in the CBD. The unusual features of this case
are discussed in this report
Correction due to finite speed of light in absolute gravimeters
Correction due to finite speed of light is among the most inconsistent ones
in absolute gravimetry. Formulas reported by different authors yield
corrections scattered up to 8 Gal with no obvious reasons. The problem,
though noted before, has never been studied, and nowadays the correction is
rather postulated than rigorously proven. In this paper we make an attempt to
revise the subject. Like other authors, we use physical models based on signal
delays and the Doppler effect, however, in implementing the models we
additionally introduce two scales of time associated with moving and resting
reflectors, derive a set of rules to switch between the scales, and establish
the equivalence of trajectory distortions as obtained from either time delay or
distance progression. The obtained results enabled us to produce accurate
correction formulas for different types of instruments, and to explain the
differences in the results obtained by other authors. We found that the
correction derived from the Doppler effect is accountable only for of
the total correction due to finite speed of light, if no signal delays are
considered. Another major source of inconsistency was found in the tacit use of
simplified trajectory models
Folded Lightweight Actuator Positioning System (FLAPS)
Precision actuation of mechanical structures on small spacecraft is challenging. Current solutions include single-use actuators, which rely on pyrotechnics and springs, and multiple-use actuators, which typically consume more size, weight, and power than available on CubeSats. The Folded Lightweight Actuated Positioning System (FLAPS) demonstrates the use of a simple rotary shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator in a bending architecture, along with a feedback control loop for repeatable and precise deployment. The FLAPS mechanism consists of a pair of SMA strips mounted to a hinge assembly, with one side attached to the CubeSat bus and the other to the deployable element. A custom actuator shape was manufactured using oven annealing. SMA actuation is achieved using joule heating. Feedback control is provided by a closed-loop PID control scheme, feedback sensor, and controller board. The FLAPS actuator is currently being developed for CubeSat solar panel positioning and drag control. Other potential FLAPS applications include aperture repositioning, deployable radiators, and steerable antennas. The FLAPS team will validate the actuator system in a microgravity environment on a parabolic fight in late 2019
Modeling Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) Mass Flow Rate as Affected by Drying and Storage Conditions
Ethanol production in 2015 was over 15 million gallons in the United States, and it is projected to increase in the next few years to meet market demands. With the continued growth in the ethanol industry, there has been enormous expansion in distillers grains production. Because the local market for distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) is often saturated, it is essential to transport DDGS long distances, across the United States and to international markets. Caking and agglomeration of DDGS particles in hoppers and other storage structures are typical during transportation. The current study deals with DDGS prepared by combining condensed distillers solubles (CDS) with distillers wet grains and then drying at varying temperatures. DDGS was stored in conical hoppers under varying ambient temperature, consolidation pressure, and time conditions. We investigated the effects of CDS (10, 15, and 20% wb), drying temperature (100, 200, and 300°C), drying time (20, 40, and 60 min), cooling temperature (0, 25, and 50°C), consolidation pressure (0, 1.72, and 3.43 kPa), and consolidation time (0, 3, and 6 days) levels on various flow parameters. To examine these factors, Taguchi’s experimental design with an L18 orthogonal array was implemented. Response surface modeling yielded mass flow rate = f(Hausner ratio, angle of repose) with R2 = 0.99, and it predicted moisture content for good, fair, and poor flow. Results showed that drying temperature, drying time, and cooling type were the main factors in predicting mass flow rate. The Johansson model for predicted mass flow rate was calibrated with experimental data, and a new parameter, compressibility factor, with a value of 0.96 g2/(min cm3), was determined to quantify the divergence of compressible and cohesive materials (such as DDGS) for free-flowing bulk solids. A New Remote Guided Method for Supervised Web-Based Cognitive Testing to Ensure High Quality Data
Background. The global COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a fundamental reexamination of how human psychological research can be conducted both safely and robustly in a new era of digital working and physical distancing. Online web-based testing has risen to the fore as a promising solution for rapid mass collection of cognitive data without requiring human contact. However, a long-standing debate exists over the data quality and validity of web-based studies. Here, we examine the opportunities and challenges afforded by the societal shift toward web-based testing, highlight an urgent need to establish a standard data quality assurance framework for online studies, and develop and validate a new supervised online testing methodology, remote guided testing (RGT).
Methods. A total of 85 healthy young adults were tested on 10 cognitive tasks assessing executive functioning (flexibility, memory and inhibition) and learning. Tasks were administered either face-to-face in the laboratory (N=41) or online using remote guided testing (N=44), delivered using identical web-based platforms (CANTAB, Inquisit and i-ABC). Data quality was assessed using detailed trial-level measures (missed trials, outlying and excluded responses, response times), as well as overall task performance measures.
Results. The results indicated that, across all measures of data quality and performance, RGT data was statistically-equivalent to data collected in person in the lab. Moreover, RGT participants out-performed the lab group on measured verbal intelligence, which could reflect test environment differences, including possible effects of mask-wearing on communication.
Conclusions. These data suggest that the RGT methodology could help to ameliorate concerns regarding online data quality and - particularly for studies involving high-risk or rare cohorts - offer an alternative for collecting high-quality human cognitive data without requiring in-person physical attendance.Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (H012508 and BB/P021255/1).
