Radiation can never again dominate Matter in a Vacuum Dominated Universe
We demonstrate that in a vacuum-energy-dominated expansion phase,
surprisingly neither the decay of matter nor matter-antimatter annihilation
into relativistic particles can ever cause radiation to once again dominate
over matter in the future history of the universe.Comment: updated version, as it will appear in Phys. Rev D. Title change, and

Genetic variation for nutrient use efficiency in maize under different tillage and fertilization regimes with special emphasis to plant microbe interaction
Conservation tillage (no-till and reduced tillage) brings many benefits with respect to soil fertility and energy use, but it also has drawbacks regarding the need for synthetic fertilizers and herbicides. To promote conversation tillage in organic farming systems, crop rotation, fertilization and weed control have to be optimized. In addition, crop varieties are needed with improved nutrient use efficiency (NUE) and high weed competitiveness or tolerance
Lepton flavor violation in low-scale seesaw models: SUSY and non-SUSY contributions
Taking the supersymmetric inverse seesaw mechanism as the explanation for
neutrino oscillation data, we investigate charged lepton flavor violation in
radiative and 3-body lepton decays as well as in neutrinoless
conversion in muonic atoms. In contrast to former studies, we take into account
all possible contributions: supersymmetric as well as non-supersymmetric. We
take CMSSM-like boundary conditions for the soft supersymmetry breaking
parameters. We find several regions where cancellations between various
contributions exist, reducing the lepton flavor violating rates by an order of
magnitude compared to the case where only the dominant contribution is taken
into account. This is in particular important for the correct interpretation of
existing data as well as for estimating the reach of near future experiments
where the sensitivity will be improved by one to two orders of magnitude.
Moreover, we demonstrate that ratios like BR()/BR() can be used to determine whether the supersymmetric contributions
dominate over the and contributions or vice versa.Comment: 75 pages, 7 figures. v3: references and comments added. Matches

The Cosmological Constant is Back
A diverse set of observations now compellingly suggest that Universe
possesses a nonzero cosmological constant. In the context of quantum-field
theory a cosmological constant corresponds to the energy density of the vacuum,
and the wanted value for the cosmological constant corresponds to a very tiny
vacuum energy density. We discuss future observational tests for a cosmological
constant as well as the fundamental theoretical challenges---and
opportunities---that this poses for particle physics and for extending our
understanding of the evolution of the Universe back to the earliest moments.Comment: latex, 8 pages plus one ps figure available as separate compressed

Phase-Field Simulation and Design of a Ferroelectric Nano-Generator
We study the behavior of ferroelectric material (BaTiO3) for the design of a nano-generator to convert mechanical
into electrical energy. The investigations consider an electro-mechanical phase-field model with polarization as
state variable. This widely accepted model has its origins in the work of and is fully developed by Landis and
coworkers. We use a finite element model to simulate tetragonal regions of ferroelectric material sputtered on
substrate. Different geometries as well as various mechanical and electrical boundary conditions are considered.
The model parameters are normalized to achieve better computational conditions within the stiffness matrix.
The major objective of this contribution is the fundamental understanding of domain switching caused by a
cyclic electrical field. The corresponding hysteresis loops of the overall polarization cannot be achieved by using
a two-dimensional model because the domain topologies evolve in three dimensions. The three-dimensional
nature of the domain structure evolution is even true for flat regions or thin films. We show some examples of
three-dimensional domain topologies, which are able to break energetically unfavorable symmetries. Finally, the
computational model of a tetragonal nano-generator with dimensions 10 x 60 x 10 nm is presented. The specific
ratio of height to width and the mounting on substrate is essential for its performance and principle of energy
harvesting. We discuss the challenges and scopes of such a system.Aerospace Engineerin
Perspectives for detecting lepton flavour violation in left-right symmetric models
We investigate lepton flavour violation in a class of minimal left-right symmetric models where the left-right symmetry is broken by triplet scalars. In this context we present a method to consistently calculate the triplet-Yukawa couplings which takes into account the experimental data while simultaneously respecting the underlying symmetries. Analysing various scenarios, we then calculate the full set of tree-level and one-loop contributions to all radiative and three-body flavour-violating fully leptonic decays as well as μ − e conversion in nuclei. Our method illustrates how these processes depend on the underlying parameters of the theory. To that end we observe that, for many choices of the model parameters, there is a strong complementarity between the different observables. For instance, in a large part of the parameter space, lepton flavour violating τ-decays have a large enough branching ratio to be measured in upcoming experiments. Our results further show that experiments coming online in the immediate future, like Mu3e and BELLE II, or longer-term, such as PRISM/PRIME, will probe significant portions of the currently allowed parameter space
A constrained supersymmetric left-right model
Abstract: We present a supersymmetric left-right model which predicts gauge coupling unification close to the string scale and extra vector bosons at the TeV scale. The subtleties in constructing a model which is in agreement with the measured quark masses and mixing for such a low left-right breaking scale are discussed. It is shown that in the constrained version of this model radiative breaking of the gauge symmetries is possible and a SM-like Higgs is obtained. Additional CP-even scalars of a similar mass or even much lighter are possible. The expected mass hierarchies for the supersymmetric states differ clearly from those of the constrained MSSM. In particular, the lightest down-type squark, which is a mixture of the sbottom and extra vector-like states, is always lighter than the stop. We also comment on the model’s capability to explain current anomalies observed at the LHC
The Einstein static universe with torsion and the sign problem of the cosmological constant
In the field equations of Einstein-Cartan theory with cosmological constant a
static spherically symmetric perfect fluid with spin density satisfying the
Weyssenhoff restriction is considered. This serves as a rough model of space
filled with (fermionic) dark matter. From this the Einstein static universe
with constant torsion is constructed, generalising the Einstein Cosmos to
Einstein-Cartan theory.
The interplay between torsion and the cosmological constant is discussed. A
possible way out of the cosmological constant's sign problem is suggested.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX; minor layout changes, typos corrected, one new

Dirty Black Holes and Hairy Black Holes
An approach based on considerations of the non-classical energy momentum
tensor outside the event horizon of a black hole provides additional physical
insight into the nature of discrete quantum hair on black holes and its effect
on black hole temperature. Our analysis both extends previous work based on the
Euclidean action techniques, and corrects an omission in that work. We also
raise several issues related to the effects of instantons on black hole
thermodynamics and the relation between these effects and results in two
dimensional quantum field theory.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, submitted to Physical Review Letter
