Research on Activators for Lead-Acid Batteries

Abstract : The ITE Battery Research group has developed a new organic battery activator for new and used lead-acid batteries. Ten years of investigation have established the validity of the ITE activator that prolongs the useful life of lead-acid batteries. It has been shown that the specific gravity of spent batteries can be restored to the original level in automotive, motive power; uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and stationary energy storage batteries. Our results show that the discarded batteries over 60% can be used for normal car service. Also, the activators were effective for the life extension even in the repeat of continuous high rate discharge, and maintained the original level up to 200 cycles in the ordinary conditions. This paper summarizes the basic concepts for life extension of lead-acid batteries by ITE activator and experimental results to justify the proposed concepts

Generation of a Purely Single Transverse Mode Vortex Beam from a He-Ne Laser Cavity with a Spot-Defect Mirror

Spot-defect mirrors were fabricated by focusing laser pulses on the surface of conventional dielectric mirrors. These mirrors were used as rear mirrors of a He-Ne laser cavity for generating a vortex beam. The intensity distribution of the beam generated from the cavity with a spot diameter of 50 m was in excellent agreement with theory. Comprehensive analysis of the intensity distribution, the beam quality factor, and the interference pattern revealed that the beam obtained was a purely single transverse mode LG01 beam

Morphological Study of Calcospherites in Rat and Rabbit Incisor Dentin

Calcospherites from incisors of rats and rabbits were studied, by means of secondary and backscattered electron images, using scanning electron microscopy. Part of each incisor specimen was made anorganic to allow observation of the surface of the mineralization front by scanning electron microscopy; the other part was ground on one side for observation by scanning electron microscopy with a backscattered electron image detector. In both species the labial mineralization front was wavy and the image showed fused calcospherites, whereas the lingual mineralization front appeared to consist of a combination of linear and globular forms. In rat labial dentin the calcospherites were large and globular form, but they did not develop in the lingual dentin and were small and oval. The shape and size of rabbit incisor calcospherites varied from the pulp horn to the root apex. There were great differences between rats and rabbits with respect to the size and shape of the calcospherites at the mineralization front. This may be due to species differences and possibly the differing rates of dentinogenesis in rats and rabbits

Dichotomy rests partially on the psychological drive inherent in human nature to see dualities of elements in what calls for reasoned explanations. But in America, it is more of a consequence of the culture-a process of partitioning the seemingly incompatibles or irreconcilables into two parts and redefining them in terms stereotypical of the general attitude of the era. What I have sketched so far in the preceding chapters is the American society that should be viewed as an argument culture which depends for its satisfaction upon dichotomy, oftentimes with the winning side claiming "truth." Even in intellectual activity the middle alternatives have often been dismissed. Many people still remain stalwart upholders of dichotomies, whether intelligently conceived or not. Prevalent (as of January, 2009) is the opinion that "anti-intellectualism" has receded (along with George W. Bush) after having dominated the political scene and "intellectualism" has secured an honored position again (along with Barack Obama). "Intellectualism or reason has suffered long in the battle with catchpenny realities or unreason," is nothing but another phase of dichotomy characteristic of the traditional American culture. With the emergence of the Internet, environmentalism and globalism, however, dividing elements categorically into two sharply opposed groups may not be a mental luxury all these people can easily afford. Intellectualism embraces reason, but what we might call "new intellectualism" or "neo-intellectualism" seems to be ready to nurture the potential "truth" of both sides. It may even contribute to an understanding of Emerson\u27s transcendental concern with a dialectic ... not dichotomous ... union of "mind" and "nature," and of Thoreau as "one both knowing and doing.
