Resonant Relaxation in Electroweak Baryogenesis
We compute the leading, chiral charge-changing relaxation term in the quantum
transport equations that govern electroweak baryogenesis using the closed time
path formulation of non-equilibrium quantum field theory. We show that the
relaxation transport coefficients may be resonantly enhanced under appropriate
conditions on electroweak model parameters and that such enhancements can
mitigate the impact of similar enhancements in the CP-violating source terms.
We also develop a power counting in the time and energy scales entering
electroweak baryogenesis and include effects through second order in ratios
of the small and large scales. We illustrate the implications of the
resonantly enhanced terms using the Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model, focusing on the interplay between the
requirements of baryogenesis and constraints obtained from collider studies,
precision electroweak data, and electric dipole moment searches.Comment: 30 pages plus appendices, 7 figure
Field quantization and squeezed states generation in resonators with time-dependent parameters
The problem of electromagnetic field quantization is usually considered in textbooks under the assumption that the field occupies some empty box. The case when a nonuniform time-dependent dielectric medium is confined in some space region with time-dependent boundaries is studied. The basis of the subsequent consideration is the system of Maxwell's equations in linear passive time-dependent dielectric and magnetic medium without sources
Multiexcitons confined within a sub-excitonic volume: Spectroscopic and dynamical signatures of neutral and charged biexcitons in ultrasmall semiconductor nanocrystals
The use of ultrafast gating techniques allows us to resolve both spectrally
and temporally the emission from short-lived neutral and negatively charged
biexcitons in ultrasmall (sub-10 nm) CdSe nanocrystals (nanocrystal quantum
dots). Because of forced overlap of electronic wave functions and reduced
dielectric screening, these states are characterized by giant interaction
energies of tens (neutral biexcitons) to hundreds (charged biexcitons) of meV.
Both types of biexcitons show extremely short lifetimes (from sub-100
picoseconds to sub-picosecond time scales) that rapidly shorten with decreasing
nanocrystal size. These ultrafast relaxation dynamics are explained in terms of
highly efficient nonradiative Auger recombination.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
MV3: A new word based stream cipher using rapid mixing and revolving buffers
MV3 is a new word based stream cipher for encrypting long streams of data. A
direct adaptation of a byte based cipher such as RC4 into a 32- or 64-bit word
version will obviously need vast amounts of memory. This scaling issue
necessitates a look for new components and principles, as well as mathematical
analysis to justify their use. Our approach, like RC4's, is based on rapidly
mixing random walks on directed graphs (that is, walks which reach a random
state quickly, from any starting point). We begin with some well understood
walks, and then introduce nonlinearity in their steps in order to improve
security and show long term statistical correlations are negligible. To
minimize the short term correlations, as well as to deter attacks using
equations involving successive outputs, we provide a method for sequencing the
outputs derived from the walk using three revolving buffers. The cipher is fast
-- it runs at a speed of less than 5 cycles per byte on a Pentium IV processor.
A word based cipher needs to output more bits per step, which exposes more
correlations for attacks. Moreover we seek simplicity of construction and
transparent analysis. To meet these requirements, we use a larger state and
claim security corresponding to only a fraction of it. Our design is for an
adequately secure word-based cipher; our very preliminary estimate puts the
security close to exhaustive search for keys of size < 256 bits.Comment: 27 pages, shortened version will appear in "Topics in Cryptology -

Qubits entanglement dynamics modified by an effective atomic environment
We study entanglement dynamics of a couple of two-level atoms resonantly
interacting with a cavity mode and embedded in a dispersive atomic environment.
We show that in the absence of the environment the entanglement reaches its
maximum value when only one exitation is involved. Then, we find that the
atomic environment modifies that entanglement dynamics and induces a typical
collapse-revival structure even for an initial one photon Fock state of the
field.Comment: eight pages, two figure include
Revealing the Exciton Fine Structure in PbSe Nanocrystal Quantum Dots
We measure the photoluminescence (PL) lifetime, , of excitons in
colloidal PbSe nanocrystals (NCs) at low temperatures to 270~mK and in high
magnetic fields to 15~T. For all NCs (1.3-2.3~nm radii), increases
sharply below 10~K but saturates by 500~mK. In contrast to the usual picture of
well-separated ``bright" and ``dark" exciton states (found, e.g., in CdSe NCs),
these dynamics fit remarkably well to a system having two exciton states with
comparable - but small - oscillator strengths that are separated by only
300-900 eV. Importantly, magnetic fields reduce below 10~K,
consistent with field-induced mixing between the two states. Magnetic circular
dichroism studies reveal exciton g-factors from 2-5, and magneto-PL shows
10\% circularly polarized emission.Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letter
A Large Blue Shift of the Biexciton State in Tellurium Doped CdSe Colloidal Quantum Dots
The exciton-exciton interaction energy of Tellurium doped CdSe colloidal
quantum dots is experimentally investigated. The dots exhibit a strong Coulomb
repulsion between the two excitons, which results in a huge measured biexciton
blue shift of up to 300 meV. Such a strong Coulomb repulsion implies a very
narrow hole wave function localized around the defect, which is manifested by a
large Stokes shift. Moreover, we show that the biexciton blue shift increases
linearly with the Stokes shift. This result is highly relevant for the use of
colloidal QDs as optical gain media, where a large biexciton blue shift is
required to obtain gain in the single exciton regime.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Quadrupole transitions near interface: general theory and application to atom inside a planar cavity
Quadrupole radiation of an atom in an arbitrary environment is investigated
within classical as well as quantum electrodynamical approaches. Analytical
expressions for decay rates are obtained in terms of Green function of Maxwell
equations. The equivalence of both approaches is shown. General expressions are
applied to analyze the quadrupole decay rate of an atom placed between two half
spaces with arbitrary dielectric constant. It is shown that in the case when
the atom is close to the surface, the total decay rate is inversely
proportional to the fifth power of distance between an atom and a plane
interface.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
Geometrical approach to mutually unbiased bases
We propose a unifying phase-space approach to the construction of mutually
unbiased bases for a two-qubit system. It is based on an explicit
classification of the geometrical structures compatible with the notion of
unbiasedness. These consist of bundles of discrete curves intersecting only at
the origin and satisfying certain additional properties. We also consider the
feasible transformations between different kinds of curves and show that they
correspond to local rotations around the Bloch-sphere principal axes. We
suggest how to generalize the method to systems in dimensions that are powers
of a prime.Comment: 10 pages. Some typos in the journal version have been correcte
