KeV Warm Dark Matter and Composite Neutrinos
Elementary keV sterile Dirac neutrinos can be a natural ingredient of the
composite neutrino scenario. For a certain class of composite neutrino
theories, these sterile neutrinos naturally have the appropriate mixing angles
to be resonantly produced warm dark matter (WDM). Alternatively, we show these
sterile neutrinos can be WDM produced by an entropy-diluted thermal freeze-out,
with the necessary entropy production arising not from an out-of-equilibrium
decay, but rather from the confinement of the composite neutrino sector,

The Oxytocin Receptor (OXTR) Contributes to Prosocial Fund Allocations in the Dictator Game and the Social Value Orientations Task
Background: Economic games observe social decision making in the laboratory that involves real money payoffs. Previously we have shown that allocation of funds in the Dictator Game (DG), a paradigm that illustrates costly altruistic behavior, is partially determined by promoter-region repeat region variants in the arginine vasopressin 1a receptor gene (AVPR1a). In the current investigation, the gene encoding the related oxytocin receptor (OXTR) was tested for association with the DG and a related paradigm, the Social Values Orientation (SVO) task. Methodology/Principal Findings: Association (101 male and 102 female students) using a robust-family based test between 15 single tagging SNPs (htSNPs) across the OXTR was demonstrated with both the DG and SVO. Three htSNPs across the gene region showed significant association with both of the two games. The most significant association was observed with rs1042778 (p = 0.001). Haplotype analysis also showed significant associations for both DG and SVO. Following permutation test adjustment, significance was observed for 2–5 locus haplotypes (p,0.05). A second sample of 98 female subjects was subsequently and independently recruited to play the dictator game and was genotyped for the three significant SNPs found in the first sample. The rs1042778 SNP was shown to be significant for the second sample as well (p = 0.004, Fisher’s exact test). To Fear is to Gain? The Role of Fear Recognition in Risky Decision Making in TBI Patients and Healthy Controls
Fear is an important emotional reaction that guides decision making in situations of ambiguity or uncertainty. Both recognition of facial expressions of fear and decision making ability can be impaired after traumatic brain injury (TBI), in particular when the frontal lobe is damaged. So far, it has not been investigated how recognition of fear influences risk behavior in healthy subjects and TBI patients. The ability to recognize fear is thought to be related to the ability to experience fear and to use it as a warning signal to guide decision making. We hypothesized that a better ability to recognize fear would be related to a better regulation of risk behavior, with healthy controls outperforming TBI patients. To investigate this, 59 healthy subjects and 49 TBI patients were assessed with a test for emotion recognition (Facial Expression of Emotion: Stimuli and Tests) and a gambling task (Iowa Gambling Task (IGT)). The results showed that, regardless of post traumatic amnesia duration or the presence of frontal lesions, patients were more impaired than healthy controls on both fear recognition and decision making. In both groups, a significant relationship was found between better fear recognition, the development of an advantageous strategy across the IGT and less risk behavior in the last blocks of the IGT. Educational level moderated this relationship in the final block of the IGT. Awareness, concern and willingness to adopt biosecure behaviours: public perceptions of invasive tree pests and pathogens in the UK
The growing incidence of invasive tree
pest and disease outbreaks is recognised as an
increasing threat to ecosystem services and human
wellbeing. Linked to global trade, human movement
and climate change, a number of outbreaks have
attracted high public and media attention. However,
there is surprisingly little evidence characterising the
nature of public attentiveness to these events, nor how
publics might respond to evolving outbreaks and the
management actions taken. This paper presents findings
from an online questionnaire involving 1334
respondents nationally-representative of the British
public to assess awareness, concern and willingness to
adopt biosecure behaviours. Despite revealing low
levels of awareness and knowledge, the results indicate
that the British public is concerned about the
health of trees, forests and woodlands and is moderately
willing to adopt biosecure behaviours. A key
finding is that membership of environmental organisations
and strong place identity are likely to engender
higher awareness and levels of concern about tree
pests and diseases. Further, those who visit woodlands
regularly are likely to be more aware than non-visitors,
and gardeners are more likely to be concerned than
non-gardeners. Women, older respondents, those with
strong place identity and dependence, members of
environmental organisations, woodland visitors and
gardeners were most likely to express a willingness to
adopt biosecure behaviours. A comparison with findings
from a survey conducted by the authors 3 years
previously shows a decline over time in awareness,
concern and willingness
