    Hydrodynamics of Spatially Ordered Superfluids

    We derive the hydrodynamic equations for the supersolid and superhexatic phases of a neutral two-dimensional Bose fluid. We find, assuming that the normal part of the fluid is clamped to an underlying substrate, that both phases can sustain third-sound modes and that in the supersolid phase there are additional modes due to the superfluid motion of point defects (vacancies and interstitials).Comment: 24 pages of ReVTeX and 7 uuencoded figures.     Resolving the Azimuthal Ambiguity in Vector Magnetogram Data with the Divergence-Free Condition: Application to Discrete Data

    We investigate how the divergence-free property of magnetic fields can be exploited to resolve the azimuthal ambiguity present in solar vector magnetogram data, by using line-of-sight and horizontal heliographic derivative information as approximated from discrete measurements. Using synthetic data we test several methods that each make different assumptions about how the divergence-free property can be used to resolve the ambiguity. We find that the most robust algorithm involves the minimisation of the absolute value of the divergence summed over the entire field of view. Away from disk centre this method requires the sign and magnitude of the line-of-sight derivatives of all three components of the magnetic field vector.Comment: Solar Physics, in press, 20 pages, 11 figure

    Emergence of heat extremes attributable to anthropogenic influences

    Climate scientists have demonstrated that a substantial fraction of the probability of numerous recent extreme events may be attributed to human-induced climate change. However, it is likely that for temperature extremes occurring over previous decades a fraction of their probability was attributable to anthropogenic influences. We identify the first record-breaking warm summers and years for which a discernible contribution can be attributed to human influence. We find a significant human contribution to the probability of record-breaking global temperature events as early as the 1930s. Since then, all the last 16 record-breaking hot years globally had an anthropogenic contribution to their probability of occurrence. Aerosol-induced cooling delays the timing of a significant human contribution to record-breaking events in some regions. Without human-induced climate change recent hot summers and years would be very unlikely to have occurred

    Efficient c-planarity testing for embedded flat clustered graphs with small faces

    Let C be a clustered graph and suppose that the planar embedding of its underlying graph is fixed. Is testing the c-planarity of C easier than in the variable embedding setting? In this paper we give a first contribution towards answering the above question. Namely, we characterize c-planar embedded flat clustered graphs with at most five vertices per face and give an efficient testing algorithm for such graphs. The results are based on a more general methodology that sheds new light on the c-planarity testing problem

    Automated error correction of business process models

    As order dependencies between process tasks can get complex, it is easy to make mistakes in process model design, especially behavioral ones such as deadlocks. Notions such as soundness formalize behavioral errors and tools exist that can identify such errors. However these tools do not provide assistance with the correction of the process models. Error correction can be very challenging\ud as the intentions of the process modeler are not known and there may be many ways in which an error can be corrected. We present a novel technique for automatic error correction in process models based on simulated annealing. Via this\ud technique a number of process model alternatives are identified that resolve one or more errors in the original model. The technique is implemented and validated on a sample of industrial process models. The tests show that at least one sound solution can be found for each input model and that the response times are short
