    The Tropos Software Development Methodology: Processes, Models and Diagrams

    Tropos is a novel agent-oriented software development methodology founded on two key features: (i) the notions of agent, goal, plan and various other knowledge level concepts are fundamental primitives used uniformly throughout the software development process; and (ii) a crucial role is assigned to requirements analysis and specification when the system-to-be is analyzed with respect to its intended environment. This paper provides a (first) detailed account of the Tropos methodology. In particular, we describe the basic concepts on which Tropos is founded and the types of models one builds out of them. We also specify the analysis process through which design flows from external to system actors through a goal analysis and delegation. In addition, we provide an abstract syntax for Tropos diagrams and other linguistic constructs

    U-Pn geochronology of deformed metagranites in central Sutherland, Scotland: evidence for widespread late Silurian metamorphism and ductile deformation of the Moine Supergroup during the Caledonian orogeny

    Within the Caledonides of central Sutherland, Scotland, the Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Moine Supergroup record NW-directed D2 ductile thrusting and nappe assembly, accompanied by widespread tight-to-isoclinal folding and amphibolite-facies metamorphism. A series of metagranite sheets which were emplaced and penetratively deformed during D2 have been dated using SHRIMP UâPb geochronology. Zircon ages of 424 8 Ma (Vagastie Bridge granite), 420 6 Ma (Klibreck granite) and 429 11 Ma (Strathnaver granite) are interpreted to date emplacement, and hence regional D2 deformation, during mid- to late Silurian time. Titanite ages of 413 3 Ma (Vagastie Bridge granite) and 416 3 Ma (Klibreck granite) are thought to date post-metamorphic cooling through a blocking temperature of c. 550â 500 8C. A mid- to late Silurian age for D2 deformation supports published models that have viewed the internal ductile thrusts of this part of the orogen as part of the same kinematically linked system of forelandpropagating thrusts as the marginal Moine Thrust Zone. The new data contrast with previous interpretations that have viewed the dominant structures and metamorphic assemblages within the Moine Supergroup as having formed during the early to mid-Ordovician Grampian arcâcontinent orogeny. The mid-to late Silurian D2 nappe stacking event in Sutherland is probably a result of the collision of Baltica with the Scottish segment of Laurentia

    U-Pb zircon dating of basement inliers within the Moine Supergroup, Scottish Caledonides: implications of Archaean protolith ages.

    Basement gneiss inliers within the Scottish Caledonides have been conventionally correlated with the Archaean Lewisian Gneiss Complex of the Caledonian foreland. Alternatively, the inliers could represent allochthonous terranes accreted to Laurentia before or during the Caledonian orogeny. SIMS U-Pb zircon dating indicates that the Ribigill, Borgie, Farr and Western Glenelg basement inliers are characterized by late Archaean protolith ages, and a period of isotopic disturbance in the late Palaeoproterozoic. The data are broadly consistent with correlation between the inliers and components of the Lewisian Gneiss Complex of the Caledonian foreland. The c. 2900 Ma protolith ages support correlation of the Borgie and Farr inliers with the Assynt terrane, and a younger, c. 2800 Ma age for the Ribigill inlier supports correlation with the Rhiconich terrane.None of the studied inliers shows a complete match of protolith and early metamorphic histories with any of the Lewisian basement terranes, but differences between the inliers and the foreland are no greater than those recorded within the foreland basement terranes themselves. Therefore, it remains probable that the dated inlier gneisses formed a distal part of the Laurentian margin prior to final telescoping during the Caledonian orogeny

    Proposal for a terrane-based nomenclature for the Lewisian Gneiss Complex of NW Scotland

    The current nomenclature for the Lewisian Gneiss Complex has evolved from lithological and structural correlations made prior to any dating. Initial (flawed) geochronological studies gave some names an apparent chronological standing but, as work advanced, fitting events into a coherent regional framework became increasingly difficult. Modern dating studies have shown that the Lewisian Gneiss Complex was progressively assembled from disparate blocks of Archaean continental crust and juvenile Proterozoic arcs, which satisfy the definition of terranes. Each terrane had its own separate accretionary and metamorphic history followed by a common history once juxtaposed against other terranes. Based on a new compilation of modern geochronology allied to the many detailed structural and metamorphic studies, this paper proposes a new systematic terminology for the Lewisian Gneiss Complex that is more applicable to this new tectonic framework

    The effect of gap size on growth and species composition of 15-year-old regrowth in mixed blackbutt forests

    In north-eastern New South Wales (NSW) the Regional Forest Agreement process has transferred more than 400 000 ha of state forests to national park, and restricted silviculture to 'single tree selection' and a light form of 'Australian group selection'. While these silvicultural systems are theoretically well suited to ecologically sustainable forest management, there is concern that in their current form they are not achieving adequate regeneration or optimising the growth of that regeneration. This is of particular concern for mixed-species blackbutt forest, for which there is no quantitative research concerning the growth and composition of regeneration within group - selection gaps. We address this issue by: (1) quantifying the effect of gap size, and other gap characteristics including distance from gap edge, on the growth of regeneration; and (2) assessing the effect of gap size on the composition of regeneration. We use the answers to these questions to recommend a gap size for group selection silviculture in mixed-species blackbutt forests in north-eastern NSW. We measured attributes describing the growth and composition of regeneration in nine circular group-selection gaps in mixedspecies blackbutt forest near Coffs Harbour and Wauchope. These gaps contained 14.5-15.5-y-old regeneration and provided three replicates of small (0.27-0.3 ha), medium (0.45-0.67 ha) and large (0.93-0.97 ha) gaps. ANOVA testing indicated significantly (P < 0.05) lower height, diameter and volume growth of dominant blackbutt stems up to five metres from gap edge. Outside this zone growth remained fairly constant, indicating dominant blackbutt trees were susceptible to suppression only in close proximity to gap edges. Multiple regression analysis confirmed the relatively short distance from gap edges over which suppression occurred, with distance to closest gap edge explaining a small proportion of the variation in the models fitted for tree- and plot-level growth. The origin of blackbutt regeneration within gaps was a significant effect in tree-level growth models, with planted stems having increased diameter and volume growth compared with stems regenerated from natural seedfall. Gap size had no significant effect on the composition of regeneration. We conclude that for the range of gaps tested, 1 -ha gaps are optimal for growth because they minimise the proportion of gap within 5 m of the retained forest edge, without altering composition. Larger gaps have also been shown to have operational and economic benefits compared with smaller gaps

    DATA COMMUNICATION USING VISIBLE LIGHT

    Visible Light Communication (VLC) using a Light Fidelity system, as proposed by a German physicist—Harald Haas, provides transmission of data through illumination by sending data through an LED light source that varies in intensity that can be controlled and adjusted such that it appears as normal light to the naked human eye. Here the property of persistence of vision of the human eye is exploited for additional application of a free, sustainable and green source that can be used for wireless communication at very fast data rates. This paper focuses on developing a low cost Li-Fi based system and analyses its performance with respect to existing wireless technology. Wi-Fi is great for general wireless coverage within buildings, whereas Li-Fi is ideal for high density wireless data coverage in confined area and for relieving radio interference issues. Li-Fi based system provides better bandwidth, efficiency, availability and security than Wi-Fi and has already achieved higher data rates. By leveraging the low-cost nature of LEDs and lighting units there are many opportunities to exploit this medium, from public internet access through day-to-day light sources which have their primary purpose of only emitting light. This project envisions a future where data for communication devices will be transmitted through the visible spectrum thus de-clogging the currently overused RF spectrum

    East Java: Cenozoic basins, volcanoes and ancient basement

    East Java on land is divided here into four broadly EW zones: (1) the Southern Mountains Zone, an Eocene to Miocene volcanic arc, separated by (2) the present-day volcanic arc from (3) the Kendeng Zone which was the main Cenozoic depocentre in onshore East Java; and to the north (4) the Rembang Zone which represents the edge of the Sunda Shelf. Several synthems separated by unconformities can be identified and correlated between the different zones. There is a regional angular unconformity above Upper Cretaceous and older basement. The oldest rocks above the unconformity range from Mid Eocene to Lower Oligocene and record a gradual transgression and, in SE Java, an increase in volcanic material up-section.After an intra-Oligocene sea-level fall, volcanic material from the arc dominated in the Southern Mountains and Kendeng Zones while in the Rembang Zone carbonate deposition continued. In the Early Miocene, activity in the Southern Mountains Volcanic Arc culminated in a major eruptive phase at 20 Ma ± 1 Ma, similar in scale to the Pleistocene eruptions of Toba. To the north carbonate deposition was interrupted by clastic input containing reworked basement and Eocene material. The Mid Miocene was a period of reworking and carbonate sedimentation. In the Late Miocene volcanic activity recommenced at the position of the present-day arc and there was a series of deformation events throughout East Java. Volcanism has played an important role in the development of East Java, providing a source of material and contributing to subsidence by flexural loading. Provenance studies and dating of zircons provide insight into the basement character and suggest that continental crust of Gondwana (possibly Western Australian) origin lies beneath part of the Southern Mountains Zone. It is suggested that continental Sundaland provided very little, if any, terrigenous material to East Java in the Cenozoic

    Enhanced diffusion of Uranium and Thorium linked to crystal plasticity in zircon

    The effects of crystal-plasticity on the U-Th-Pb system in zircon is studied by quantitative microstructural and microchemical analysis of a large zircon grain collected from pyroxenite of the Lewisian Complex, Scotland. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) mapping reveals a c.18° variation in crystallographic orientation that comprises both a gradual change in orientation and a series of discrete low-angle (<4°) boundaries. These microstructural data are consistent with crystal-plastic deformation of zircon associated with the formation and migration of dislocations. A heterogeneous pattern of dark cathodoluminescence, with the darkest domains coinciding with low-angle boundaries, mimics the deformation microstructure identified by EBSD. Geochemical data collected using the Sensitive High Resolution Ion MicroProbe (SHRIMP) shows a positive correlation between concentrations of the elements U, Th and Pb (ranging from 20–60 ppm, 30–110 ppm, and 14–36 ppm, respectively) and Th/U ratio (1.13 – 1.8) with the deformation microstructure. The highest measured concentrations and Th/U coincide with low-angle boundaries. This enrichment is interpreted to reflect enhanced bulk diffusion of U and Th due to the formation and migration of high-diffusivity dislocations. (207)Pb/(206)Pb ages for individual analyses show no significant variation across the grain, and define a concordant, combined mean age of 2451 ± 14 Ma. This indicates that the grain was deformed shortly after initial crystallization, most probably during retrograde Inverian metamorphism at amphibolite facies conditions. The elevated Th over U and consistent (207)Pb/(206)Pb ages indicates that deformation most likely occurred in the presence of a late-stage magmatic fluid that drove an increase in the Th/U during deformation. The relative enrichment of Th over U implies that Th/U ratio may not always be a robust indicator of crystallization environment. This study provides the first evidence of deformation-related modification of the U-Th system in zircon and has fundamental implications for the application and interpretation of zircon trace element data
