A Slower Superluminal Velocity for the Quasar 1156+295
As part of an ongoing effort to observe high energy gamma-ray blazars with
VLBI, we have produced 8 and 2 GHz VLBI images, at ten epochs spanning the
years 1988 to 1996, of the quasar 1156+295. The VLBI data have been taken from
the Washington VLBI correlator's geodetic database. We have detected detected
four components and have measured their apparent speeds to be 8.8 +/- 2.3, 5.3
+/- 1.1, 5.5 +/- 0.9, and 3.5 +/- 1.2 h^{-1}c from the outermost component
inwards. (H_{0}=100h km/(s Mpc), q_{0}=0.5 throughout paper). These velocities
contradict a previously published very high superluminal velocity of 26 h^{-1}c

Environmental Health Indicators: A review of initiatives worldwide
Purpose
â The extent to which research into the design and development of environmental health indicators (EHIs) has translated into operational programmes is unclear. The purpose of this paper is to identify EHI initiatives worldwide, distil the EHIs and draw lessons from the experience.
Design/methodology/approach
â A systematic internet-based review was undertaken. Programmes were selected for inclusion if they: first, had the ability to monitor both the physical environment and associated health outcomes; and second, the parent agency had the ability to influence policies related to the environment and health.
Findings
â The small number of eligible programmes indicates EHI initiatives are not yet well established, especially in developing countries. The use of indicators was also limited by uncertainties in the exposure-response relationships that they implied, and the consequent inability to translate the indicators into a common measure of health impact. In addition, there is no information on the extent to which the indicators have been applied in decision making, nor on the policy implications of using indicators.
Practical implications
â More effort is needed to encourage the development and use of more balanced and informative sets of indicators, and to evaluate their use and outcomes in terms of health benefits.
Originality/value
â The time is right for a substantial review paper on EHIs as they are now being used by a number of organisations and to the knowledge this is the first review of operational EHI programmes worldwide
Observations of OJ 287 from the Geodetic VLBI Archive of the Washington Correlator
We present 27 geodetic VLBI maps of OJ 287 obtained from the archive of the
Washington correlator. The observations presented here were made between 1990
October and 1996 December. During this period a sequence of six superluminal
components has been identified. We measured the proper motion of these
components to be approximately 0.5 mas/yr, which is about twice as high as that
seen in previous VLBI observations. These results imply a higher component
ejection rate than previously observed, in good agreement with the observed
occurrences of radio outbursts. We have examined a possible connection between
VLBI components and optical flares in the framework of a binary black hole

A 3D <i>in vitro</i> model reveals differences in the astrocyte response elicited by potential stem cell therapies for CNS injury.
Aim: This study aimed to develop a 3D culture model to test the extent to which transplanted stem cells modulate astrocyte reactivity, where exacerbated glial cell activation could be detrimental to CNS repair success. Materials & methods: The reactivity of rat astrocytes to bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, neural crest stem cells (NCSCs) and differentiated adipose-derived stem cells was assessed after 5 days. Schwann cells were used as a positive control. Results: NCSCs and differentiated Schwann cell-like adipose-derived stem cells did not increase astrocyte reactivity. Highly reactive responses to bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and Schwann cells were equivalent. Conclusion: This approach can screen therapeutic cells prior to in vivo testing, allowing cells likely to trigger a substantial astrocyte response to be identified at an early stage. NCSCs and differentiated Schwann cell-like adipose-derived stem cells may be useful in treating CNS damage without increasing astrogliosis

Engineered neural tissue with aligned, differentiated adipose-derived stem cells promotes peripheral nerve regeneration across a critical sized defect in rat sciatic nerve.
Adipose-derived stem cells were isolated from rats and differentiated to a Schwann cell-like phenotype in vitro. The differentiated cells (dADSCs) underwent self-alignment in a tethered type-1 collagen gel, followed by stabilisation to generate engineered neural tissue (EngNT-dADSC). The pro-regenerative phenotype of dADSCs was enhanced by this process, and the columns of aligned dADSCs in the aligned collagen matrix supported and guided neurite extension in vitro. EngNT-dADSC sheets were rolled to form peripheral nerve repair constructs that were implanted within NeuraWrap conduits to bridge a 15 mm gap in rat sciatic nerve. After 8 weeks regeneration was assessed using immunofluorescence imaging and transmission electron microscopy and compared to empty conduit and nerve graft controls. The proportion of axons detected in the distal stump was 3.5 fold greater in constructs containing EngNT-dADSC than empty tube controls. Our novel combination of technologies that can organise autologous therapeutic cells within an artificial tissue construct provides a promising new cellular biomaterial for peripheral nerve repair
Observations of BL Lacertae from the Geodetic VLBI Archive of the Washington Correlator
We present maps of BL Lac obtained from geodetic VLBI data from the archive of the Washington correlator. The observations were made from 1996 March to 1996 November, with periods from one experiment to another as short as 1 month. The dominant structure of the maps is given by a superluminal component (C2) moving predominantly at position angle ~190°. At the later epochs a new superluminal component (C3) emerges from the core and moves along a trajectory at a higher position angle (200°). We also include maps from observations made in 1995 June and August showing the main component (C2) in the early stages of its evolution, as well as an older component (C1). The position angle of the component C1 is nearly the same as that of the new component C3. The component C2 shows indications of nonradial motion, which is discussed in terms of a helically distorted jet. The best fit was obtained for a half-opening angle of the jet of 2.6d and an angle of the helical axis to the line of sight of 17°

VSOP and Ground-based VLBI Imaging of the TeV Blazar Markarian 421 at Multiple Epochs
We present thirty VLBI images of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 (1101+384) at
fifteen epochs spanning the time range from 1994 to 1997, and at six different
frequencies from 2.3 to 43 GHz. The imaged observations include a
high-resolution 5 GHz VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) observation with
the HALCA satellite on 1997 November 14; full-track VLBA observations from 1994
April, 1996 November, and 1997 May at frequencies between 5 and 43 GHz; six
epochs of VLBA snapshot observations at frequencies between 2 and 15 GHz from
Radio Reference Frame studies; and five geodetic VLBI observations at 2 and 8
GHz from the archive of the Washington VLBI Correlator Facility located at the
U.S. Naval Observatory. The dense time coverage of the images allows us to
unambiguously track components in the parsec-scale jet over the observed time
range. We measure the speeds of three inner jet components located between 0.5
and 5 mas from the core (0.3 to 3 pc projected linear distance) to be 0.19 +/-
0.27, 0.30 +/- 0.07, and -0.07 +/- 0.07 c (H_{0}=65 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}). If the
sole 43 GHz image is excluded, all measured speeds are consistent with no
motion. These speeds differ from tentative superluminal speeds measured by
Zhang & B\aa\aa th from three epochs of data from the early 1980's. Possible
interpretations of these subluminal speeds in terms of the high Doppler factor

Geodetic VLBI Observations of EGRET Blazars
We present VLBI observations of the EGRET quasars 0202+149, CTA 26, and
1606+106, as well as additional analysis of VLBI observations of 1156+295
presented in Piner & Kingham (1997b). We have produced 8 and 2 GHz VLBI images
at 11 epochs, 8 epochs, and 12 epochs, spanning the years 1989 to 1996, of
0202+149, CTA 26, and 1606+106 respectively. The VLBI data have been taken from
the Washington VLBI correlator's geodetic database. We have measured the
apparent velocities of the jet components and find that CTA 26 and 1606+106 are
superluminal sources, with average apparent speeds of 8.9 and 2.9 h^{-1}c
respectively (H_{0}=100h km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}, q_{0}=0.5). The components in
0202+149 are stationary, and we identify this source as a compact F double.
These sources all have apparently bent jets, and we detected non-radial motion
of components in CTA 26 and 1156+295. We have not yet detected any components
emerging subsequent to the gamma-ray flares in CTA 26, 1156+295, and 1606+106,
and we derive lower limits on the ejection times of any such components. The
misalignment angle distribution of the EGRET sources is compared to the
distribution for blazars as a whole, and we find that EGRET sources belong
preferentially to neither the aligned nor the misaligned population. We also
compare the average values for the apparent velocities and Doppler beaming
factors for the EGRET and non-EGRET blazars, and find no significant
differences. We thus find no indication, within the measurement errors, that
EGRET blazars are any more strongly beamed than their counterparts which have
