Economic impact of political barriers to cross-border acquisitions: An empirical study of CNOOC's unsuccessful takeover of Unocal
In 2005, the US Congress challenged the acquisition by CNOOC (a Chinese state-owned enterprise) of Unocal (a US firm). This challenge creates a political barrier for foreign companies to acquire US oil companies. This paper examines the stock price reaction of US oil companies to this political opposition. Using an event study methodology, we find that this political barrier resulted in a substantial decline in the market value of US oil companies. For a period of 44 days, during which six anti-CNOOC-takeover political events occurred, the cumulative decline in the market value of a portfolio of 13 US oil refining firms was 11.4 billion. This study is the first to analyze and quantify the stock price reaction of US non-merging firms to political barriers to cross-border acquisitions. Methylation of TET2, CBL and CEBPA in Ph-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms
A loss-of-function mutation of TET2, CBL and CEBPA has been implicated in the pathogenesis or leukaemic transformation of myeloproliferative neoplasm. As tumour suppressor genes may potentially be inactivated by promoter hypermethylation, the authors studied the methylation status of these genes in three cell lines and diagnostic marrow samples from 45 patients with myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) (essential thrombocythaemia, N=34; polycythaemia vera, N=7 and primary myelofibrosis, N=4) by methylation-specific PCR. TET2 was heterozygously methylated in MEG-01 and K562 but completely unmethylated in HEL. On the other hand, both CBL and CEBPA were completely unmethylated in all three cell lines. In the primary marrow samples, methylation of TET2 occurred in two (5.9%) patients with essential thrombocythaemia (4.4% of all patients), both without JAK2 V617 mutation, but not in polycythaemia vera or primary myelofibrosis. There was no association between TET2 methylation with the type of MPN (p=0.713). Hypermethylation of CBL or CEBPA was not detected in any patients. In summary, methylation of TET2, CBL and CEBPA is infrequent in MPN at diagnosis. The role of methylation of these genes at the time of leukaemic transformation warrants further study.published_or_final_versio
Methylation of miR-34a, miR-34b/c, miR-124-1 and miR-203 in Ph-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms
BACKGROUND: MicroRNA (miR) miR-34a, -34b/c, -124-1 and -203 are tumor suppressor miRs implicated in carcinogenesis. METHODS: We studied DNA methylation of these miRs in Philadelphia-negative (Ph-ve) myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). Methylation-specific PCR (MSP), verified by direct sequencing of the methylated MSP products, was performed in cell lines, normal controls and diagnostic marrow samples of patients with MPNs. RESULTS: Methylation of these miRs was absent in the normal controls. miR-34b/c were homozygously methylated in HEL cells but heterozygously in MEG-01. In HEL cells, homozygous miR-34b/c methylation was associated with miR silencing, and 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine treatment led to re-expression of both miR-34b and miR-34c, consistent with that both miRs are under the regulation of the same promoter CpG island. miR-34a was heterozygously methylated in MEG-01 and K-562. miR-203 was completely unmethylated in K-562 and SET-2 but no MSP amplification was found in both HEL and MEG-01, suggestive of miR deletion. In primary samples, four each had miR-34b/c and -203 methylation, in which two had concomitant methylation of miR-34b/c and -203. miR-34a was methylated in one patient and none had methylation of miR-124-1. Seven patients (15.6%) had methylation of at least one of the four miRs. miR methylation did not correlate with clinical parameters, disease complications or JAK2 V617F mutation. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of miR hypermethylation in MPNs. miR-203 hypermethylation is not specific to Ph+ve leukemias but also present in Ph-ve MPNs. miR-34b/c methylation was associated with reversible miR silencing. On the Gain and Link Equation for Reactive Millimetre-wave Surface Wave Propagation System
Surface-wave has been proven to be the third option between wired and wireless communication. It has been proposed to be utilised for inter-machine and on-body communications, because of its on-surface two-dimensional feature. It provides a flexible two-dimensional platform and shows many advantages such as power savings, excellent electromagnetic compatibility characteristic, non-line-of-sight communication over traditional space wave wireless communication systems. When compared to wired systems, surface wave systems can provide a wide band channel for one-to-many/many-to-one communications. This work we will demonstrate our recent work in the concept of surface wave gain and formulate the surface wave wireless link equation for the first time. A 52 GHz 3-dB bandwidth test bed was constructed to validate the theoretical and simulation results in the proposed method and equation
Simulation and Experimental Verification for a 52 GHz Wideband Trapped Surface Wave Propagation System
Trapped surface wave (TSW) provides a flexible 2-D wireless solution when compared to existing wired and free space communications systems. This work aims to provide the theoretical guidance, supported by simulation techniques and experimental verifications, for 1) designing the wideband and highly efficient rectangular aperture TSW transducers and 2) selecting the best reactive surface impedance for high efficiency. First, a method for computing the TSW excitation efficiency is proposed for the first time and it can be applied to different kinds of reactive surface geometries and transducer apertures. Then, the relation between the TSW excitation efficiency, surface reactance, and aperture height is derived. Then, the maximum excitation efficiency, the corresponding optimal surface reactance, and aperture height are presented. Furthermore, the relation between the TSW angular coverage and aperture width is determined. These studies show that the aperture height mainly determines the TSW excitation efficiencies, while the aperture width controls the TSW angular coverage; hence, the two aperture parameters of a transducer can be independently determined. Finally, an experiment setup, based on the provided guidelines, has been built to demonstrate a 52 GHz wide 3 dB-transmission-bandwidth for high-performance communications systems

Alkali metal emissions in early stage of a pulverized-coal flame: DNS analysis of reacting layers and chemistry tabulation
The intricate coupling between coal pyrolysis, gas phase combustion and the emissions
of alkali metal, such as sodium, is studied in early stage of a temporally
evolving three-dimensional planar turbulent jet carrying pulverized-coal particles.
Complex chemistry is used to account for both the combustion of volatile hydrocarbons
and the sodium containing species. The response of the sodium chemistry
is analyzed in the mixture fraction space, along with the topology of the reactions
zones. Combustion is found to start preferentially in partially premixed flames,
which then evolve toward di usion-like reactive layers and reach chemical equilibrium.
From the direct numerical simulation (DNS) database, the possibility
of modeling the dynamics of sodium species using one-dimensional premixed
flamelet generated manifolds (FGM) is investigated. A chemical lookup table
is constructed for the combustion of the partially premixed volatiles and an additional
three-dimensional simulation is performed to compare the tabulated sodium
species against their reference counterparts with complex chemistry. Quantitative
analysis of the performance of the developed chemistry tabulation confirms the
validity of the approach. Perspectives for the modeling of sodium emissions in

Dealing with missing standard deviation and mean values in meta-analysis of continuous outcomes: a systematic review
Background: Rigorous, informative meta-analyses rely on availability of appropriate summary statistics or individual
participant data. For continuous outcomes, especially those with naturally skewed distributions, summary
information on the mean or variability often goes unreported. While full reporting of original trial data is the ideal,
we sought to identify methods for handling unreported mean or variability summary statistics in meta-analysis.
Methods: We undertook two systematic literature reviews to identify methodological approaches used to deal with
missing mean or variability summary statistics. Five electronic databases were searched, in addition to the Cochrane
Colloquium abstract books and the Cochrane Statistics Methods Group mailing list archive. We also conducted cited
reference searching and emailed topic experts to identify recent methodological developments. Details recorded
included the description of the method, the information required to implement the method, any underlying
assumptions and whether the method could be readily applied in standard statistical software. We provided a
summary description of the methods identified, illustrating selected methods in example meta-analysis scenarios.
Results: For missing standard deviations (SDs), following screening of 503 articles, fifteen methods were identified in
addition to those reported in a previous review. These included Bayesian hierarchical modelling at the meta-analysis
level; summary statistic level imputation based on observed SD values from other trials in the meta-analysis; a practical
approximation based on the range; and algebraic estimation of the SD based on other summary statistics. Following
screening of 1124 articles for methods estimating the mean, one approximate Bayesian computation approach and
three papers based on alternative summary statistics were identified. Illustrative meta-analyses showed that when
replacing a missing SD the approximation using the range minimised loss of precision and generally performed better
than omitting trials. When estimating missing means, a formula using the median, lower quartile and upper quartile
performed best in preserving the precision of the meta-analysis findings, although in some scenarios, omitting trials
gave superior results.
Conclusions: Methods based on summary statistics (minimum, maximum, lower quartile, upper quartile, median)
reported in the literature facilitate more comprehensive inclusion of randomised controlled trials with missing mean or
variability summary statistics within meta-analyses
Ferroelectricity induced by interatomic magnetic exchange interaction
Multiferroics, where two or more ferroic order parameters coexist, is one of
the hottest fields in condensed matter physics and materials science[1-9].
However, the coexistence of magnetism and conventional ferroelectricity is
physically unfavoured[10]. Recently several remedies have been proposed, e.g.,
improper ferroelectricity induced by specific magnetic[6] or charge orders[2].
Guiding by these theories, currently most research is focused on frustrated
magnets, which usually have complicated magnetic structure and low magnetic
ordering temperature, consequently far from the practical application. Simple
collinear magnets, which can have high magnetic transition temperature, have
never been considered seriously as the candidates for multiferroics. Here, we
argue that actually simple interatomic magnetic exchange interaction already
contains a driving force for ferroelectricity, thus providing a new microscopic
mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and
magnetism. We demonstrate this mechanism by showing that even the simplest
antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator MnO, can display a magnetically induced
ferroelectricity under a biaxial strain
