On slip pulses at a sheared frictional viscoelastic/ non deformable interface
We study the possibility for a semi-infinite block of linear viscoelastic
material, in homogeneous frictional contact with a non-deformable one, to slide
under shear via a periodic set of ``self-healing pulses'', i.e. a set of
drifting slip regions separated by stick ones. We show that, contrary to
existing experimental indications, such a mode of frictional sliding is
impossible for an interface obeying a simple local Coulomb law of solid
friction. We then discuss possible physical improvements of the friction model
which might open the possibility of such dynamics, among which slip weakening
of the friction coefficient, and stress the interest of developing systematic

A Comparison of Cognitive Function in Former Rugby Union Players Compared with Former Non-Contact-Sport Players and the Impact of Concussion History
Aim: This study investigated differences in cognitive function between former rugby and non-contact-sport players, and assessed the association between concussion history and cognitive function. Methods: Overall, 366 former players (mean ± standard deviation [SD] age 43.3 ± 8.2 years) were recruited from October 2012 to April 2014. Engagement in sport, general health, sports injuries and concussion history, and demographic information were obtained from an online self-report questionnaire. Cognitive functioning was assessed using the online CNS Vital Signs neuropsychological test battery. Cohen’s d effect size statistics were calculated for comparisons across player groups, concussion groups (one or more self-reported concussions versus no concussions) and between those groups with CNS Vital Signs age-matched norms (US norms). Individual differences within groups were represented as SDs. Results: The elite-rugby group (n = 103) performed worse on tests of complex attention, processing speed, executive functioning, and cognitive flexibility than the non-contact-sport group (n = 65), and worse than the community-rugby group (n = 193) on complex attention. The community-rugby group performed worse than the non-contact group on executive functioning and cognitive flexibility. Compared with US norms, all three former player groups performed worse on verbal memory and reaction time; rugby groups performed worse on processing speed, cognitive flexibility and executive functioning; and the community-rugby group performed worse on composite memory. The community-rugby group and non-contact-sport group performed slightly better than US norms on complex attention, as did the elite-rugby group for motor speed. All three player groups had greater individual differences than US norms on composite memory, verbal memory and reaction time. The elite-rugby group had greater individual differences on processing speed and complex attention, and the community-rugby group had greater individual differences on psychomotor speed and motor speed. The average number of concussions recalled per player was greater for elite rugby and community rugby than non-contact sport. Former players who recalled one or more concussions (elite rugby, 85 %; community rugby, 77 %; non-contact sport, 23 %) had worse scores on cognitive flexibility, executive functioning, and complex attention than players who did not recall experiencing a concussion. Conclusions: Past participation in rugby or a history of concussion were associated with small to moderate neurocognitive deficits (as indicated by worse CNS Vital Signs scores) in athletes post retirement from competitive sport

We report a successful quantitative account of the experimentally determined electron thermal conductivity χe in a beam-heated H mode plasma by the magnetic fluctuations from microtearing instabilities. The calculated χe based on existing nonlinear theory agrees with the result from transport analysis of the experimental data. Without using any adjustable parameter, the good agreement spans the entire region where there is a steep electron temperature gradient to drive the instability
Incidence, management and outcomes of the first cfr-mediated linezolid-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis outbreak in a tertiary referral centre in the Republic of Ireland.

epidermidis.
Methods: Linezolid-resistant S. epidermidis isolated at University Hospital Limerick from
four blood cultures, one wound and four screening swabs (from nine patients) between
April and June 2013 were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multilocus
sequence typing (MLST) and staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCCmec) typing.
Antibiotic susceptibilities were determined according to the guidelines of the British Society
for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. The outbreak was controlled through prohibiting
prescription and use of linezolid, adherence to infection prevention and control practices,
enhanced environmental cleaning, isolation of affected patients, and hospital-wide education
programmes.
Findings: PFGE showed that all nine isolates represented a single clonal strain. MLST
showed that they belonged to ST2, and SCCmec typing showed that they encoded a variant
of SCCmecIII. All nine isolates were cfr positive, and eight isolates were positive for the
G2576T 23S rRNA mutation commonly associated with linezolid resistance. Isolates
exhibited multiple antibiotic resistances (i.e. linezolid, gentamicin, methicillin, clindamycin,
ciprofloxacin, fusidic acid and rifampicin). The adopted infection prevention
intervention was effective, and the outbreak was limited to the affected intensive care

Observation of the screening signature in the lateral photovoltage of electrons in the Quantum Hall regime
The lateral photovoltage generated in the plane of a two-dimensional electron
system (2DES) by a focused light spot, exhibits a fine-structure in the quantum
oscillations in a magnetic field near the Quantum Hall conductivity minima. A
double peak structure occurs near the minima of the longitudinal conductivity
oscillations. This is the characteristic signature of the interplay between

Impact of safety-engineered devices on the incidence of occupational blood and body fluid exposures among healthcare personnel in an Academic Facility, 2000-2014
background. Legislative actions and advanced technologies, particularly dissemination of safety-engineered devices, have aided in protecting healthcare personnel from occupational blood and body fluid exposures (BBFE). objective. To investigate the trends in BBFE among healthcare personnel over 15 years and the impact of safety-engineered devices on the incidence of percutaneous injuries as well as features of injuries associated with these devices. methods. Retrospective cohort study at University of North Carolina Hospitals, a tertiary care academic facility. Data on BBFE in healthcare personnel were extracted from Occupational Health Service records (2000'2014). Exposures associated with safety-engineered and conventional devices were compared. Generalized linear models were applied to measure the annual incidence rate difference by exposure type over time. results. A total of 4,300 BBFE, including 3,318 percutaneous injuries (77%), were reported. The incidence rate for overall BBFE was significantly reduced during 2000'2014 (incidence rate difference, 1.72; P=.0003). The incidence rate for percutaneous injuries was also dramatically reduced during 2001'2006 (incidence rate difference, 1.37; P= .0079) but was less changed during 2006'2014. Percutaneous injuries associated with safety-engineered devices accounted for 27% of all BBFE. BBFE was most commonly due to injecting through skin, placing intravenous catheters, and blood drawing. conclusions. Our study revealed significant overall reduction in BBFE and percutaneous injuries likely due in part to the impact of safetyengineered devices but also identified that a considerable proportion of percutaneous injuries is now associated with these devices. Additional prevention strategies are needed to further reduce percutaneous injuries and improve design of safety-engineered devices
The Intentional Use of Service Recovery Strategies to Influence Consumer Emotion, Cognition and Behaviour
Service recovery strategies have been identified as a critical factor in the success of. service organizations. This study develops a conceptual frame work to investigate how specific service recovery strategies influence the emotional, cognitive and negative behavioural responses of . consumers., as well as how emotion and cognition influence negative behavior. Understanding the impact of specific service recovery strategies will allow service providers' to more deliberately and intentionally engage in strategies that result in positive organizational outcomes. This study was conducted using a 2 x 2 between-subjects quasi-experimental design. The results suggest that service recovery has a significant impact on emotion, cognition and negative behavior. Similarly, satisfaction, negative emotion and positive emotion all influence negative behavior but distributive justice has no effect
A novel and simple test of gait adaptability predicts gold standard measures of functional mobility in stroke surviveors
Background
Although there is evidence that stroke survivors have reduced gait adaptability, the underlying mechanisms and the relationship to functional recovery are largely unknown. We explored the relationships between walking adaptability and clinical measures of balance, motor recovery and functional ability in stroke survivors.
Methods
Stroke survivors (n = 42) stepped to targets, on a 6 m walkway, placed to elicit step lengthening, shortening and narrowing on paretic and non-paretic sides. The number of targets missed during six walks and target stepping speed was recorded. Fugl–Meyer (FM), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), self-selected walking speed (SWWS) and single support (SS) and step length (SL) symmetry (using GaitRite when not walking to targets) were also assessed. Stepwise multiple-linear regression was used to model the relationships between: total targets missed, number missed with paretic and non-paretic legs, target stepping speed, and each clinical measure.
Results
Regression revealed a significant model for each outcome variable that included only one independent variable. Targets missed by the paretic limb, was a significant predictor of FM (F(1,40) = 6.54, p = 0.014,). Speed of target stepping was a significant predictor of each of BBS (F(1,40) = 26.36, p < 0.0001), SSWS (F(1,40) = 37.00, p < 0.0001). No variables were significant predictors of SL or SS asymmetry.
Discussion
Speed of target stepping was significantly predictive of BBS and SSWS and paretic targets missed predicted FM, suggesting that fast target stepping requires good balance and accurate stepping demands good paretic leg function. The relationships between these parameters indicate gait adaptability is a clinically meaningful target for measurement and treatment of functionally adaptive walking ability in stroke survivors
Gaugino Mass Nonuniversality and Dark Matter in SUGRA, Strings and D Brane Models
The effects of nonuniversality of gaugino masses on dark matter are examined
within supersymmetric grand unification, and in string and D brane models with
R parity invariance. In SU(5) unified models nonuniversality in the gaugino
sector can be generated via the gauge kinetic energy function which may depend
on the 24, 75 and 200 dimensional Higgs representations. We also consider
string models which allow for nonuniversality of gaugino masses and D brane
models where nonuniversality arises from embeddings of the Standard Model gauge
group on five branes and nine branes. It is found that with gaugino mass
nonuniversality the range of the LSP mass can be extended much beyond the range
allowed in the universal SUGRA case, up to about 600 GeV even without
coannihilation effects in some regions of the parameter space. The effects of
coannihilation are not considered and inclusion of these effects may further
increase the allowed neutralino mass range. Similarly with the inclusion of
gaugino mass nonuniversality, the neutralino-proton () cross-section
can increase by as much as a factor of 10 in some of regions of the parameter
space. An analysis of the uncertainties in the quark density content of the
nucleon is given and their effects on cross-section are discussed.
The predictions of our analysis including nonuniversality is compared with the
current limits from dark matter detectors and implications for future dark

The Swift X-Ray Te1escope: Status and Performance
We present science highlights and performance from the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT), which was launched on November 20,2004. The XRT covers the 0.2-10 keV band, and spends most of its time observing gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows, though it has also performed observations of many other objects. By mid-August 2007, the XRT had observed over 220 GRB afterglows, detecting about 96% of them. The XRT positions enable followup ground-based optical observations, with roughly 60% of the afterglows detected at optical or near IR wavelengths. Redshifts are measured for 33% of X-ray afterglows. Science highlights include the discovery of flaring behavior at quite late times, with implications for GRB central engines; localization of short GRBs, leading to observational support for compact merger progenitors for this class of bursts; a mysterious plateau phase to GRB afterglows; as well as many other interesting observations such as X-ray emission from comets, novae, galactic transients, and other objects
