    Effects of unsaturation and curvature on the transverse distribution of intramolecular dynamics of dipyrenyl lipids

    The roles of acyl chain unsaturation and curvature in the excimer formation efficiency (EFE) of site-specific conjugated pyrene molecules in lipid membranes have been investigated by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Six 1–2-(pyrenyl-n-acyl)-phosphatidylcholine (dipy(n)PC) probes, with pyrenyl chains of varying methylene units n from 4 to 14 carbons, were incorporated separately into dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) or dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE) lipid membranes at 0.1 mol%. Both the excimer-to-monomer fluorescence intensity ratio and association-to-dissociation rate constant ratio of conjugated pyrenes were used to quantify EFE. At all temperatures (T = 0–30 degrees C) and for n = 4 and 6, the EFE for DOPE was always smaller than EFE for DOPC. At T < 10 degrees C (where DOPE and DOPC are in the liquid crystalline L alpha phase) and for n > 8, the EFE for curvature frustrated DOPE was significantly greater than EFE for nonfrustrated DOPC (control), and the difference increased gradually with n. At T> 18 degrees C (where DOPE is in the inverted hexagonal H(II) phase and DOPC is in the L alpha phase) and for n > 8, EFE for the curvature-relaxed DOPE was again smaller than the EFE for DOPC control. The contributions of splay conformation and internal dynamics of pyrenyl chains to EFE were examined separately using a lattice model. Our results suggest that i) the cis double bonds of the host lipid matrix strongly perturb both the conformation and dynamics of conjugated pyrenes at the specific location around n = 8, and ii) the lateral stress at the upper part (n < 8) of the curvature frustrated bilayer membranes (DOPE) may be significantly relaxed once the membrane surface adopts a favorable negative interfacial curvature

    AbstractA 72-year-old woman with bilateral hip dysplasia sustained atypical femoral fracture of the left subtrochanteric region. She underwent left total hip replacement with a long extensively porous coated femoral stem. The fracture healed with incorporation of the strut allograft after 8 months. A painful horizontal radiolucent line at the tip of the femoral stem was noted after 4 years, with resolution of symptoms after a period of protected weight bearing. We believe that total hip replacement for subtrochanteric atypical femoral fracture with pre-existing hip dysplasia is a feasible option and avoids a second operation for the treatment of osteoarthritis

    Acquiring new customers and retaining loyal customers have been two important tasks for retailers. One critical issue to retain loyal customers is to know the customers well so that the retailers can provide the right products, do the right promotions and maintain customers from switching away to competitors, i.e. churn. In this study, we investigated the partial churners’ behaviors by (1) identifying key churn predictors, (2) establishing a churn prediction procedure, and (3) applying classification techniques to detect the possible partial churners. Further, the performance of each classification technique was examined and evaluated. We adapted and modified a two-year period customer and transaction data from a retailer to verify our proposed approach. Discussion and managerial implications are provided at the end

    Shredding energy consumption of GFRP composite waste

    This work investigated effect of glass fibre fabric structures, feedstock feed rate and screen size on specific shredding energy of glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP) waste via a two-level factorial design of experiment study. Four types of fabric structure, i.e. unidirectional (UD), biaxial (BIAX), triaxial (TRIAX) and chopped strand mat (CSM), were impregnated separately with unsaturated polyester resin to manufacture GFRP plates. The shredding energy was measured using a two-wattmeter approach. During shredding, CSM demonstrated a relatively flat power consumption curve compared to other fabric types. It was also noticed that the GFRP plate reinforced with more complex woven structure, i.e. TRIAX, required higher energy for shredding, especially with a combination of high feed rate and small screen size. It was found that mechanical efficiency was only around 8.2-15.7% and 0.8-2.2% for shredding at feed rate of 60 kg/hr and 10 kg/hr respectively. It was also found that adopting a larger screen size and lower feed rate could reduce the specific shredding energy

    Very strong intrinsic supercurrent carrying ability and vortex avalanches in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting single crystals

    We report that single crystals of (Ba,K)Fe2As2 with Tc = 32 K have a pinning potential, U0, as high as 10^4 K, with U0 showing very little field depend-ence. In addition, the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals become isotropic at low temperatures and high magnetic fields, resulting in a very rigid vortex lattice, even in fields very close to Hc2. The rigid vortices in the two dimensional (Ba,K)Fe2As2 distinguish this compound from 2D high Tc cuprate superconductors with 2D vortices, and make it being capable of cearrying very high critical current.Flux jumping due to high Jc was also observed in large samples at low temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures. submitte

    Simulated-tempering approach to spin-glass simulations

    After developing an appropriate iteration procedure for the determination of the parameters, the method of simulated tempering has been successfully applied to the 2D Ising spin glass. The reduction of the slowing down is comparable to that of the multicanonical algorithm.     Grooming of Dynamic Traffic in WDM Star and Tree Networks Using Genetic Algorithm

    The advances in WDM technology lead to the great interest in traffic grooming problems. As traffic often changes from time to time, the problem of grooming dynamic traffic is of great practical value. In this paper, we discuss dynamic grooming of traffic in star and tree networks. A genetic algorithm (GA) based approach is proposed to support arbitrary dynamic traffic patterns, which minimizes the number of ADM's and wavelengths. To evaluate the algorithm, tighter bounds are derived. Computer simulation results show that our algorithm is efficient in reducing both the numbers of ADM's and wavelengths in tree and star networks.Comment: 15 page

    The effect of finite-range interactions in classical transport theory

    The effect of scattering with non-zero impact parameters between consituents in relativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated. In solving the relativistic Boltzmann equation, the characteristic range of the collision kernel is varied from approximately one fm to zero while leaving the mean-free path unchanged. Modifying this range is shown to significantly affect spectra and flow observables. The finite range is shown to provide effective viscosities, shear, bulk viscosity and heat conductivity, with the viscous coefficients being proportional to the square of the interaction range

    Intelligent tracking control of a DC motor driver using self-organizing TSK type fuzzy neural networks

    [[abstract]]In this paper, a self-organizing Takagi–Sugeno–Kang (TSK) type fuzzy neural network (STFNN) is proposed. The self-organizing approach demonstrates the property of automatically generating and pruning the fuzzy rules of STFNN without the preliminary knowledge. The learning algorithms not only extract the fuzzy rule of STFNN but also adjust the parameters of STFNN. Then, an adaptive self-organizing TSK-type fuzzy network controller (ASTFNC) system which is composed of a neural controller and a robust compensator is proposed. The neural controller uses an STFNN to approximate an ideal controller, and the robust compensator is designed to eliminate the approximation error in the Lyapunov stability sense without occurring chattering phenomena. Moreover, a proportional-integral (PI) type parameter tuning mechanism is derived to speed up the convergence rates of the tracking error. Finally, the proposed ASTFNC system is applied to a DC motor driver on a field-programmable gate array chip for low-cost and high-performance industrial applications.     Partonic effects on the elliptic flow at relativistic heavy ion collisions

    The elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions at RHIC is studied in a multiphase transport model. By converting the strings in the high energy density regions into partons, we find that the final elliptic flow is sensitive to the parton scattering cross section. To reproduce the large elliptic flow observed in Au+Au collisions at s=130A\sqrt s=130A GeV requires a parton scattering cross section of about 6 mb.
