Using eggshell membranes as a DNA source for population genetic research

In the context of population genetic research, a faster and less invasive method of DNA sampling would allow large-scale assessments of genetic diversity and genetic differentiation with the help of volunteer observers. The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of eggshell membranes as a DNA source for population genetic research, by addressing eggshell membrane DNA quality, degeneration and cross-contamination. To this end, a comparison was made with blood-derived DNA samples. We have demonstrated 100% successful DNA extraction from post-hatched Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) eggshell membranes as well as from blood samples. Using 11 microsatellite loci, DNA amplification success was 99.1% for eggshell membranes and 97.7% for blood samples. Genetic information within eggshell membrane DNA in comparison to blood DNA was not affected (F-ST = -0.01735, P = 0.999) by degeneration or possible cross-contamination. Furthermore, neither degeneration nor cross-contamination was apparent in total genotypic comparison of eggshell membrane DNA and blood sample DNA. Our research clearly illustrates that eggshell membranes can be used for population genetic research

Consistent deformations of [p,p]-type gauge field theories

Using BRST-cohomological techniques, we analyze the consistent deformations of theories describing free tensor gauge fields whose symmetries are represented by Young tableaux made of two columns of equal length p, p>1. Under the assumptions of locality and Poincare invariance, we find that there is no consistent deformation of these theories that non-trivially modifies the gauge algebra and/or the gauge transformations. Adding the requirement that the deformation contains no more than two derivatives, the only possible deformation is a cosmological-constant-like term.Comment: 17 pages, details of a proof added, accepted for publication in JHE

Veel teelten op zand kunnen niet aan de nitraatnorm voldoen

De oppervlakte- en grondwaterkwaliteit op de zandgronden in het zuidoosten van Nederland voldoen niet aan de normen van de Nitraatrichtlijn. De Nederlandse Overheid heeft met de nieuwe mestwetgeving stikstofgebruiksnormen per gewas opgesteld. Uit onderzoek op een proefbedrijf in Noord-Limburg blijkt dat met het toepassen van de gebruiksnormen op het proefbedrijf de waterkwaliteitsnormen niet gehaald worden bji de gangbare open teelten. Verdere aanscherping van de normen leidt tot verlies aan opbrengst en een onvoldoende verlaging van de uitspoeling. Andere maatregelen zijn nodig, zoals inzet van grote groenbemesters als stikstofvanggewas, het afvoeren van gewasresten, de aanleg van zuiveringsmoerassen, beter bodembeheer en nieuwe teeltsystemen los van de grond. Veel van deze maatregelen zijn echter nog niet rijp voor uitvoering of economisch rendabel voor ondernemers. Met verdere ontwikkeling van technische oplossingen hebben genoemde maatregelen wel de potentie om de waterkwaliteitsnormen te halen of er tenminste in de buurt te kome

Condensate fluctuations of a trapped, ideal Bose gas

For a non-self-interacting Bose gas with a fixed, large number of particles confined to a trap, as the ground state occupation becomes macroscopic, the condensate number fluctuations remain micrscopic. However, this is the only significant aspect in which the grand canonical description differs from canonical or microcanonical in the thermodynamic limit.
