    Inverse versus Normal NiAs Structure as High-Pressure Phase of FeO and MnO

    The high-pressure phases of FeO and MnO were studied by the first principles calculations. The present theoretical study predicts that the high-pressure phase of MnO is a metallic normal B8 structure (nB8), while that of FeO should take the inverse B8 structure (iB8). The novel feature of the unique high-pressure phase of stoichiometric FeO is that the system should be a band insulator in the ordered antiferromagnetic (AF) state and that the existence of a band gap leads to special stability of the phase. The observed metallicity of the high-pressure and high-temperature phase of FeO may be caused by the loss of AF order and also by the itinerant carriers created by non-stoichiometry. Analysis of x-ray diffraction experiments provides a further support to the present theoretical prediction for both FeO and MnO. Strong stability of the high-pressure phase of FeO will imply possible important roles in Earth's core.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures and 1 table; submitted to "Nature

    Chinese users’ preference for web browser icons.

    This paper compares the perspicacity, appropriateness and preference of web browser icons from leading software providers with those of a culture-specific design. The history and future direction of web browsers is outlined, together with the implications for the future growth of Chinese internet users. China, with its rapidly expanding young netizens has now overtaken the USA in terms of the number of internet users (253 million) and we predict it will reach saturation (≈70% internet penetration rate) by 2012. If correct, this will have a dramatic effect on the use of English as the ‘Lingua Franca’ of the Internet. This online study was conducted in Taiwan and involved 103 participants (mean age 21 years), who were given three sets of web browser icons to review, namely Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0, Macintosh Safari 3.0, and culturally specific icons created using the Culture-Centred Design methodology. The findings of the study show that all three sets have generally high recognition rates, but that some icon functions (e.g. Go/Visit and Favourite) in all three sets have poor recognition rates and are considered inappropriate.     Anomalous Hall Effect and Magnetic Monopoles in Momentum-Space

    Efforts to find the magnetic monopole in real space have been made in cosmic rays and in accelerators, but up to now there is no firm evidence for its existence due to the very heavy mass 1016\sim 10^{16}GeV. However, we show that the magnetic monopole can appear in the crystal-momentum space of solids in the accessible low energy region (0.11\sim0.1-1eV) in the context of the anomalous Hall effect. We report experimental results together with first-principles calculations on the ferromagnetic crystal SrRuO3_3 that provide evidence for the magnetic monopole in the crystal-momentum space.Comment: 4 figures, the supporting-online-materails are include

    Success Factors of Small and Medium-Sized International Enterprises in the Chinese Market from the Perspective of Polish Direct Investment (Cultural Approach)

    Globalization has resulted in increasing transfer of firms operations, regardless of their size, to other countries. The recent dynamic emergence of China in the global economy, connecting with the vast inflows of foreign direct investment in their territory and common adjustments problems of many Western companies, has resulted in growing interest for best suitable business practices to this culturally and socially different environment. In this article, the key factors critical to the success of international companies in this region are introduced, with particular consideration to indigenous cultural elements and specific operation requirements of small and medium-sized enterprises in Business-to-Business sectors. The presented information are based on the broad literature review, five years of direct observation and thirty eight interviews conducted with Polish managers directly residing in China.     A Comparison of Quintessence and Nonlinear Born-Infeld Scalar Field Using Gold Supernova data

    We study the Non-Linear Born-Infeld(NLBI) scalar field model and quintessence model with two different potentials(V(ϕ)=sϕV(\phi)=-s\phi and 1/2m2ϕ2{1/2}m^2\phi^2). We investigate the differences between those two models. We explore the equation of state parameter w and the evolution of scale factor a(t)a(t) in both NLBI scalar field and quintessence model. The present age of universe and the transition redshift are also obtained. We use the Gold dataset of 157 SN-Ia to constrain the parameters of the two models.     QuaSI: Quantile Sparse Image Prior for Spatio-Temporal Denoising of Retinal OCT Data

    Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-resolution and non-invasive 3D imaging of the human retina but is inherently impaired by speckle noise. This paper introduces a spatio-temporal denoising algorithm for OCT data on a B-scan level using a novel quantile sparse image (QuaSI) prior. To remove speckle noise while preserving image structures of diagnostic relevance, we implement our QuaSI prior via median filter regularization coupled with a Huber data fidelity model in a variational approach. For efficient energy minimization, we develop an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) scheme using a linearization of median filtering. Our spatio-temporal method can handle both, denoising of single B-scans and temporally consecutive B-scans, to gain volumetric OCT data with enhanced signal-to-noise ratio. Our algorithm based on 4 B-scans only achieved comparable performance to averaging 13 B-scans and outperformed other current denoising methods.Comment: submitted to MICCAI'1
