    An effective data placement strategy for XML documents

    As XML is increasingly being used in Web applications, new technologies need to be investigated for processing XML documents with high performance. Parallelism is a promising solution for structured document processing and data placement is a major factor for system performance improvement in parallel processing. This paper describes an effective XML document data placement strategy. The new strategy is based on a multilevel graph partitioning algorithm with the consideration of the unique features of XML documents and query distributions. A new algorithm, which is based on XML query schemas to derive the weighted graph from the labelled directed graph presentation of XML documents, is also proposed. Performance analysis on the algorithm presented in the paper shows that the new data placement strategy exhibits low workload skew and a high degree of parallelism

    Improving mechanical properties of novel flax/tannin composites through different chemical treatments

    Due to the inherent environmental benefits of using renewable materials, mimosa tannin resin (a natural phenolic resin) reinforced by flax fibres could offer desirable characteristics (lightweight, economic and low environmental impact) aiming at reducing carbon footprint of superlight electric vehicles. The non-woven flax mats were chemically treated (alkali, acetylation, silane and enzymatic treatment) to prepare tannin composites through compression moulding (130 °C/35 min/1.5 MPa). The change in fibre morphology was seen in SEM (scanning electronic microscope) images. The treatments (except enzymatic) showed significant improvement in tensile properties, along with enhancement (acetylation) in flexural properties, but little effect on impact resistance for all treatments. APS (aminopropyl triethoxy siloxane) treated composites showed highest tensile strength of 60 MPa and modulus of 7.5 GPa. BTCA (butanetetracarboxylic acid) treatment led to the highest flexural strength of up to 70 MPa. NaOH treatment retained the impact failure force of about 0.5 kN and sustained the saturation energy (4.86 J) compared to untreated composites (4.80 J)

    El Niño-related summer precipitation anomalies in Southeast Asia modulated by the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation

    AbstractHow the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) affects El Niño-related signals in Southeast Asia is investigated in this study on a subseasonal scale. Based on observational and reanalysis data, as well as numerical model simulations, El Niño-related precipitation anomalies are analyzed for AMO positive and negative phases, which reveals a time-dependent modulation of the AMO: (i) In May?June, the AMO influences the precipitation in Southern China (SC) and the Indochina peninsula (ICP) by modulating the El Niño-related air-sea interaction over the western North Pacific (WNP). During negative AMO phases, cold sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) over the WNP favor the maintaining of the WNP anomalous anticyclone (WNPAC). The associated southerly (westerly) anomalies on the northwest (southwest) flank of the WNPAC enhance (reduce) the climatological moisture transport to SC (the ICP) and result in wetter (drier) than normal conditions. In contrast, during positive AMO phases, weak SSTAs over the WNP lead to limited influence of El Niño on precipitation in Southeast Asia. (ii) In July?August, the teleconnection impact from the North Atlantic is more manifest than that in May?June. During positive AMO phases, the warmer than normal North Atlantic favors anomalous wave trains, which propagate along the ?great circle route? and result in positive pressure anomalies over SC, consequently suppressing precipitation in SC and the ICP. During negative AMO phases, the anomalous wave trains tend to propagate eastward from Europe to Northeast Asia along the summer Asian jet, exerting limited influence on Southeast Asia

With appropriate selection of the tuning parameters, the resulting estimator is shown to be consistent and to enjoy the oracle properties

    A flexible mandatory access control policy (MAC) for XML databases is presented in this paper. The label type and label access policy can be defined according to the requirements of applications. In order to preserve the integrity of data in XML databases, a constraint between a read access rule and a write access rule in label access policy is introduced. Rules for label assignment and propagation are proposed to alleviate the workload of label assignment. Also, a solution for resolving conflicts of label assignments is proposed. At last, operations for implementation of the MAC policy in a XML database are illustrated
