    Middle Management in Agriculture: Roles, Functions, and Practices

    The role of middle managers in agriculture and agribusiness has been neglected by applied - as well as disciplinary - research, while gaining increasing importance in practice. This study provides an overview of middle management research and analyzes middle managers' authority in human resource decision-making and human resource management practices based on in-depth interviews analyzed through a grounded theory approach.     Considering Visual Artifacts in IT Cultures

    Visuals carry cultural codes that communicate and reinforce cultural values and assumptions. Visual artifacts such as Powerpoint presentations are a ubiquitous feature in organizational life, but they are not yet widely studied. This paper presents a framework for analyzing visual artifacts that draws on concepts from visual and social science methods. In IT organizations and occupations, visual artifacts are useful tools for introducing, discussing and legitimating cultural assumptions and values for multiple audiences within technology organizations.     Finding Common Ground: Collaboration Across the Disciplines in the Scholarship of Teaching

    Many recent writings on the scholarship of teaching discuss the need to locate this scholarship within the disciplines. The authors argue that while scholarship within the disciplines is important, it should not come at the expense of work across the disciplines. They demonstrate the usefulness of cross-disciplinary collaboration for the scholarship of teaching and learning through the specific example of how collaboration contributed to their understanding of the role of such scholarship in the teaching of mathematics and negotiations courses. The authors also outline some of the pitfalls of cross-disciplinary collaboration, and they offer suggestions for beginning collaborative initiatives

    Operational flexibility of a launch system can be increased with a common interface between a launch vehicle and the family of compatible satellites. This improvement in flexibility, which enhances launch responsiveness, is achieved via the ability to rapidly replace or exchange a satellite (or select a different launch vehicle) during the launch preparation process. This study focused on concepts for interface commonality with a selection of Air Force launch vehicles and payloads. Currently, among the launch vehicles examined, there is limited interface commonality. Historical interfaces and attempts at commonality were reviewed to determine constraining factors. Concepts for providing interface commonality in both the near and far term are recommended for further study. However, implementation and maintenance of common interfaces will require increased launch vehicle performance, adequate performance margins and a cultural change which permits control of interfaces and payload weight limits

    Modeling Activity and Target-Dependent Developmental Cell Death of Mouse Retinal Ganglion Cells Ex Vivo

    Programmed cell death is widespread during the development of the central nervous system and serves multiple purposes including the establishment of neural connections. In the mouse retina a substantial reduction of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) occurs during the first postnatal week, coinciding with the formation of retinotopic maps in the superior colliculus (SC). We previously established a retino-collicular culture preparation which recapitulates the progressive topographic ordering of RGC projections during early post-natal life. Here, we questioned whether this model could also be suitable to examine the mechanisms underlying developmental cell death of RGCs. Brn3a was used as a marker of the RGCs. A developmental decline in the number of Brn3a-immunolabelled neurons was found in the retinal explant with a timing that paralleled that observed in vivo. In contrast, the density of photoreceptors or of starburst amacrine cells increased, mimicking the evolution of these cell populations in vivo. Blockade of neural activity with tetrodotoxin increased the number of surviving Brn3a-labelled neurons in the retinal explant, as did the increase in target availability when one retinal explant was confronted with 2 or 4 collicular slices. Thus, this ex vivo model reproduces the developmental reduction of RGCs and recapitulates its regulation by neural activity and target availability. It therefore offers a simple way to analyze developmental cell death in this classic system. Using this model, we show that ephrin-A signaling does not participate to the regulation of the Brn3a population size in the retina, indicating that eprhin-A-mediated elimination of exuberant projections does not involve developmental cell death

    Heterogeneity and organization of the ribosomal RNA genes of Cucurbita maxima

    Thirty-six clones were recovered from Cucurbita maxima genomic DNA which had been enriched for rDNA and cleaved at the unique repeat unit Hin d III site. Twenty-nine of these, which contain complete rDNA units, were compared to a standard whose intergenic spacer (IGS) nucleotide sequence has been determined. Twenty-one are identical in length and restriction site pattern. Eight which differ from the standard in length do so because of addition or deletion of varying numbers of IGS subrepetitive units of two different classes, with four of the length variants being different in both of these classes. Seven clones were isolated which contain incomplete repeat units, six of which are composites of rDNA and non-rDNA material. They have been cleaved at the unique rDNA Hin d III site at one end and at a non-rDNA Hin d III site at the other. We consider it most likely that these are derived from the termini of repeat unit tandem arrays, although other explanations are possible. Twelve individual plants of two different cultivars were examined for heterogeneity of IGS length distribution.     Stable Operation of a 300-m Laser Interferometer with Sufficient Sensitivity to Detect Gravitational-Wave Events within our Galaxy

    TAMA300, an interferometric gravitational-wave detector with 300-m baseline length, has been developed and operated with sufficient sensitivity to detect gravitational-wave events within our galaxy and sufficient stability for observations; the interferometer was operated for over 10 hours stably and continuously. With a strain-equivalent noise level of h5×1021/Hzh\sim 5 \times 10^{-21} /\sqrt{\rm Hz}, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 30 is expected for gravitational waves generated by a coalescence of 1.4 MM_\odot-1.4 MM_\odot binary neutron stars at 10 kpc distance. %In addition, almost all noise sources which limit the sensitivity and which %disturb the stable operation have been identified. We evaluated the stability of the detector sensitivity with a 2-week data-taking run, collecting 160 hours of data to be analyzed in the search for gravitational waves.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Zds2p Regulates Swe1p-dependent Polarized Cell Growth in Saccharomyces cerevisiae via a Novel Cdc55p Interaction Domain

    A C-terminal region in Zds2p (ZH4) is required for regulation of Swe1p-dependent polarized cell growth and this region is necessary and sufficient for interaction with protein phosphatase 2A regulatory subunit, Cdc55p. Our results indicate that the Zds proteins regulate the Swe1p-dependent G2/M checkpoint in a CDC55-dependent manner
