    Anisotropic plasma-chemical etching by an electron-beam-generated plasma

    Includes bibliographical references (page 2466).Anisotropic etching of SiO2 has been achieved with a plasma generated by a broad-area low-energy (150-300 eV) electron beam in a He + CF4 atmosphere. Etch rates of up to 330 Ã…/min for SiO2 and 220 Ã…/min for Si were obtained. Etching occurred with good uniformity over the entire area exposed to the electron-beam-generated plasma. The fluxes of energetic charged particles to the sample surface are discussed in relation to their possible contribution to the etching process

Thruster physical characteristics, performance data, life projections, and power processor component technology are summarized. The ion propulsion technology program is structured to address a broad set of mission applications from satellite stationkeeping and repositioning to primary propulsion using solar or nuclear power systems

    Implementation outcomes of cognitive behavioural therapy delivered by non-specialists for common mental disorders and substance-use disorders in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

    Due to severe shortages of specialist mental health personnel in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), psychological therapies are increasingly being delivered by non-specialist health workers (NSHWs). Previous reviews have investigated the effectiveness of NSHW-delivered psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), in LMIC settings. This systematic review aims to synthesise findings on the implementation outcomes of NSHW-delivered CBT interventions addressing common mental disorders and substance-use disorders in LMICs. Four databases were searched, yielding 3211 records, 18 of which met all inclusion criteria. We extracted and synthesised qualitative and quantitative data across eight implementation outcomes: acceptability, adoption, appropriateness, feasibility, fidelity, implementation cost, penetration and sustainability. Findings suggest that delivery of CBT-based interventions by NSHWs can be acceptable, appropriate and feasible in LMIC settings. However, more research is needed to better evaluate these and other under-reported implementation outcomes

    Broad-area electron-beam-assisted etching of silicon in sulfur hexafluoride

The etch rate was found to increase linearly with electron beam current density and to be practically independent of the electron acceleration voltage in the range investigated (170-260 V). Profiles of the resulting features show that etching is anisotropic with a vertical-to-horizontal ratio of 2.5 to 3

    Dynamic concentration of motors in microtubule arrays

    We present experimental and theoretical studies of the dynamics of molecular motors in microtubule arrays and asters. By solving a convection-diffusion equation we find that the density profile of motors in a two-dimensional aster is characterized by continuously varying exponents. Simulations are used to verify the assumptions of the continuum model. We observe the concentration profiles of kinesin moving in quasi two-dimensional artificial asters by fluorescent microscopy and compare with our theoretical results.Comment: 4pages, 4 figures revte

    The use of standard calendar software by individuals with acquired brain injury and cognitive complaints: a mixed methods study

    PURPOSE: To explore the actual use of standard calendar software by people with acquired brain injury (ABI) and healthy individuals. METHOD: Mixed methods design with qualitative and quantitative analyses of the respondents' use of calendar software. Fifteen individuals with ABI and 15 healthy participants were enrolled. Participants were asked to execute five consecutive tasks using standard calendar software, which resembled everyday use of an electronic calendar. RESULTS: The core processes "task execution" and "information processing" were influenced by internal factors (cognitive and emotional processes and fatigue) as well as environmental factors (software features and distractions). Results obtained by qualitative and quantitative methods showed similar reaction patterns in both groups. However, ABI patients had more cognitive problems and showed stronger emotions during task performance than healthy participants. Healthy participants were more successful and needed less time and mental effort to perform a task. CONCLUSIONS: Although ABI patients were able to use standard calendar software, they became upset more easily, needed more effort, became tired sooner and more suddenly. Strategies to support ABI patients in the use of calendar software are suggested from multi-disciplinary perspectives

    Characterization of Propellant Flow and Bias Required to Initiate an Arc Discharge in a Heaterless Hollow Cathode

    Heaterless hollow cathodes provide an opportunity to reduce complexity and improve reliability in electric propulsion systems. While removal of the heater has little effect on steady-state operation of a hollow cathode, it has a considerable effect on the ignition process. To successfully integrate a heaterless hollow cathode into a spaceflight electric propulsion system, it will be necessary to establish definitive requirements for the propellant feed and electrical subsystems so that ignition of a plasma discharge can be achieved reliably. The aim of this research was to form a better understanding of these requirements by performing an investigation of the propellant flow and voltage conditions required for the ignition of a plasma arc discharge. This aim was achieved by performing discharge initiation experiments using both a specially designed experimental apparatus and a functional heaterless hollow cathode assembly. It was demonstrated that there is a distinct difference in the voltage required to initiate a plasma discharge between two common electric propulsion propellants, xenon and krypton, which suggests that the developmental testing of heaterless hollow cathodes needs to be performed with the appropriate propellant gas species. Heaterless hollow cathode ignition experiments showed that the keeper orifice diameter has a strong effect on the voltage required to ignite a plasma discharge at a given propellant mass flow rate, while the effect of keeper-cathode separation distance was only strong at flow rates below 25 sccm (Xe)

    Photochemically Etched Construction Technology Developed for Digital Xenon Feed Systems

    Electric propulsion systems are quickly emerging as attractive options for primary propulsion in low Earth orbit, in geosynchronous orbit, and on interplanetary spacecraft. The driving force behind the acceptance of these systems is the substantial reduction in the propellant mass that can be realized. Unfortunately, system designers are often forced to utilize components designed for chemical propellants in their electric systems. Although functionally acceptable, these relatively large, heavy components are designed for the higher pressures and mass flow rates required by chemical systems. To fully realize the benefits of electric propulsion, researchers must develop components that are optimized for the low flow rates, critical leakage needs, low pressures, and limited budgets of these emerging systems

    Lack of associations between modifiable risk factors and dementia in the very old: findings from the Cambridge City over-75s cohort study

    Objectives:\textbf{Objectives:} To investigate the association between modifiable risk and protective factors and severe cognitive impairment and dementia in the very old. Additionally, the present study tests the predictive validity of the ‘LIfestyle for BRAin health’ (LIBRA) score, an index developed to assess an individual’s dementia prevention potential. Method:\textbf{Method:} Two hundred seventy-eight individuals aged 85 years or older from the Cambridge City over-75s cohort study were followed-up until death. Included risk and protective factors were: diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, depression, smoking, low-to-moderate alcohol use, high cognitive activity, and physical inactivity. Incident severe cognitive impairment was based on the Mini-Mental State Examination (score: 0-17) and incident dementia was based on either post-mortem consensus clinical diagnostic assessments or death certificate data. Logistic regressions were used to test whether individual risk and protective factors and the LIBRA score were associated with severe cognitive impairment or dementia after 18 years follow-up. Results:\textbf{Results:} None of the risk and protective factors or the LIBRA score was significantly associated with increased risk of severe cognitive impairment or dementia. Sensitivity analyses using a larger sample, longer follow-up period, and stricter cut-offs for prevalent cognitive impairment showed similar results. Conclusion:\textbf{Conclusion:} Associations between well-known midlife risk and protective factors and risk for severe cognitive impairment or dementia might not persist into very old age, in line with suggestions that targeting these factors through lifestyle interventions should start earlier in life.This work was supported by a fellowship (Kay Deckers) from Alzheimer Nederland and the Alzheimer’s Society UK [grant number WE.15-2015-01].     Item does not contain fulltextBACKGROUND: Children of patients with young onset dementia (YOD) who are confronted with a parent who has a progressive disease, often assist in caregiving tasks, which may have a great impact on their lives. The objective of the present study is to explore the experiences of children living with a young parent with dementia with a specific focus on the children's needs. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with 14 adolescent children between the ages of 15 and 27 years of patients with YOD were analyzed using inductive content analysis. Themes were identified based on the established codes. RESULTS: The emerging categories were divided into three themes that demonstrated the impact of dementia on daily life, different ways of coping with the disease, and children's need for care and support. The children had difficulties managing all of the responsibilities and showed concerns about their future. To deal with these problems, they demonstrated various coping styles, such as avoidant or adaptive coping. Although most children were initially reluctant to seek professional care, several of them expressed the need for practical guidance to address the changing behavior of their parent. The children felt more comfortable talking to someone who was familiar with their situation and who had specific knowledge of YOD and the available services. CONCLUSION: In addition to practical information, more accessible and specific information about the diagnosis and the course of YOD is needed to provide a better understanding of the disease for the children.
