    Structure of 55Sc and development of the N=34 subshell closure

    The low-lying structure of 55^{55}Sc has been investigated using in-beam γ\gamma-ray spectroscopy with the 9^{9}Be(56^{56}Ti,55^{55}Sc+γ\gamma)XX one-proton removal and 9^{9}Be(55^{55}Sc,55^{55}Sc+γ\gamma)XX inelastic-scattering reactions at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Transitions with energies of 572(4), 695(5), 1539(10), 1730(20), 1854(27), 2091(19), 2452(26), and 3241(39) keV are reported, and a level scheme has been constructed using γγ\gamma\gamma coincidence relationships and γ\gamma-ray relative intensities. The results are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations in the sdsd-pfpf model space, which account for positive-parity states from proton-hole cross-shell excitations, and to it ab initio shell-model calculations from the in-medium similarity renormalization group that includes three-nucleon forces explicitly. The results of proton-removal reaction theory with the eikonal model approach were adopted to aid identification of positive-parity states in the level scheme; experimental counterparts of theoretical 1/21+1/2^{+}_{1} and 3/21+3/2^{+}_{1} states are suggested from measured decay patterns. The energy of the first 3/23/2^{-} state, which is sensitive to the neutron shell gap at the Fermi surface, was determined. The result indicates a rapid weakening of the N=34N=34 subshell closure in pfpf-shell nuclei at Z>20Z>20, even when only a single proton occupies the πf7/2\pi f_{7/2} orbital

    Structural evolution in the neutron-rich nuclei 106Zr and 108Zr

    The low-lying states in 106Zr and 108Zr have been investigated by means of {\beta}-{\gamma} and isomer spectroscopy at the RI beam factory, respectively. A new isomer with a half-life of 620\pm150 ns has been identified in 108Zr. For the sequence of even-even Zr isotopes, the excitation energies of the first 2+ states reach a minimum at N = 64 and gradually increase as the neutron number increases up to N = 68, suggesting a deformed sub-shell closure at N = 64. The deformed ground state of 108Zr indicates that a spherical sub-shell gap predicted at N = 70 is not large enough to change the ground state of 108Zr to the spherical shape.     Evidence for CP Violation in B0 -> D+D- Decays

    We report measurements of the branching fraction and CP violation parameters in B0 -> D+D- decays. The results are based on a data sample that contains 535 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance, with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain [1.97 +- 0.20 (stat) +- 0.20 (syst)] x 10^(-4) for the branching fraction of B0 -> D+D-. The measured values of the CP violation parameters are: S = -1.13 +- 0.37 +- 0.09, A = 0.91 +- 0.23 +- 0.06, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. We find evidence of CP violation in B0 -> D+D- at the 4.1 sigma confidence level. While the value of S is consistent with expectations from other measurements, the value of the parameter A favors large direct CP violation at the 3.2 sigma confidence level, in contradiction to Standard Model expectations.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR

    RNA secondary structure formation: a solvable model of heteropolymer folding

    The statistical mechanics of heteropolymer structure formation is studied in the context of RNA secondary structures. A designed RNA sequence biased energetically towards a particular native structure (a hairpin) is used to study the transition between the native and molten phase of the RNA as a function of temperature. The transition is driven by a competition between the energy gained from the polymer's overlap with the native structure and the entropic gain of forming random contacts. A simplified Go-like model is proposed and solved exactly. The predicted critical behavior is verified via exact numerical enumeration of a large ensemble of similarly designed sequences.Comment: 4 pages including 2 figure

    Fusion Operators in the Generalized τ(2)\tau^{(2)}-model and Root-of-unity Symmetry of the XXZ Spin Chain of Higher Spin

    We construct the fusion operators in the generalized τ(2)\tau^{(2)}-model using the fused LL-operators, and verify the fusion relations with the truncation identity. The algebraic Bethe ansatz discussion is conducted on two special classes of τ(2)\tau^{(2)} which include the superintegrable chiral Potts model. We then perform the parallel discussion on the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity, and demonstrate that the sl2sl_2-loop-algebra symmetry exists for the root-of-unity XXZ spin chain with a higher spin, where the evaluation parameters for the symmetry algebra are identified by the explicit Fabricius-McCoy current for the Bethe states.     Search for the h_c meson in B^+- ->h_c K^+-

    We report a search for the hch_c meson via the decay chain B±hcK±B^{\pm}\to h_c K^{\pm}, \etac \gamma with ηcKS0K±π\eta_c \to K_S^0 K^{\pm} \pi^{\mp} and ppˉp\bar{p}. No significant signals are observed. We obtain upper limits on the branching fractions for B±ηcγK±B^{\pm} \to \eta_c\gamma K^{\pm} in bins of the ηcγ\eta_c\gamma invariant mass. The results are based on an analysis of 253 fb1^{-1} of data collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+ee^+e^- collider.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Comparison of Bond Character in Hydrocarbons and Fullerenes

    We present a comparison of the bond polarizabilities for carbon-carbon bonds in hydrocarbons and fullerenes, using two different models for the fullerene Raman spectrum and the results of Raman measurements on ethane and ethylene. We find that the polarizabilities for single bonds in fullerenes and hydrocarbons compare well, while the double bonds in fullerenes have greater polarizability than in ethylene.Comment: 7 pages, no figures, uses RevTeX.     Evidence of the Purely Leptonic Decay B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar

    We present the first evidence of the decay B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar using 414 fb^-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Events are tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in hadronic modes. We detect the signal with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations including systematics, and measure the branching fraction to be Br(B- --> tau- nu_tau-bar) = (1.79 +0.56-0.49(stat) +0.46-0.51(syst))*10^-4. This implies that f_B = 0.229 +0.036-0.031(stat) +0.034-0.037(syst) GeV and is the first direct measurement of this quantity.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letter

    Evidence for Direct CP Violation in B0 -> K+- pi-+ Decays

    We report evidence for direct CP violation in the decay B0 -> K+-pi-+ with 253/fb of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. Using 275 million B B_bar pairs we observe a B -> K+-pi-+ signal with 2140+-53 events. The measured CP violating asymmetry is Acp(K+-pi-+) = -0.101+-0.025 (stat)+-0.005 (syst), corresponding to a significance of 3.9 sigma including systematics. We also search for CP violation in the decays B+- -> K+-pi0 and B+- -> pi+-pi0. The measured CP violating asymmetries are Acp(K+-pi0) = 0.04+-0.05(stat)+-0.02(syst) and Acp(pi+-pi0) = -0.02+-0.10(stat)+-0.01(syst), corresponding to the intervals -0.05 < Acp(K+-pi0) < 0.13 and -0.18<Acp(pi+-pi0)<0.14 at 90% confidence level.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. submitted to Physical Review Letter

    Observation of the decay B0J/ψηB^0 \to J/\psi \eta

    We report the first observation of B0J/ψηB^0 \to J/\psi \eta decay. These results are obtained from a data sample that contains 449 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs accumulated at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+ e^- collider. We observe a signal with a significance of 8.1σ\sigma and obtain a branching fraction of (9.5 ±\pm 1.7 (stat) ±\pm 0.8 (syst))×106\times 10^{-6}.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submit to PRL (8 pages, 2 figures, ICHEP'06 Conference Paper
