    Estimación del censo de guiones de codornices Crex crex: una aplicación de la individualidad vocal a la conservación

    Vocal individuality could be used to estimate numbers of individuals in species otherwise difficult to monitor. However, the usefulness of this technique in providing conservation information is little studied. The vocalisations of the Corncrake show a high level of individual istinctiveness. This fact was used to examine current counting methods and estimate movement patterns within one breeding season. Information on individual identity gained from vocalisations increased census estimates by 20–30% and showed that male Corncrakes called less frequently than previous studies had suggested. Males moved greater distances in areas with lower availability of suitable habitat. The conservation implications of these results are discussed.La individualidad vocal puede utilizarse para estimar el número de individuos en especies que de otra manera sería difícil controlar. Sin embargo, la utilidad de esta técnica para obtener información acerca de la conservación ha sido poco estudiada. La vocalización del guión de codornices muestra un alto grado de diferenciación individual, lo que se utilizó para examinar métodos de recuento y estimar patrones de movimiento durante la época de reproducción.     Temperature dependence of the ohmic conductivity and activation energy of Pb1+y(Zr0.3Ti0.7)O3 thin films

    The ohmic conductivity of the sol-gel derived Pb1+y(Zr0.3Ti0.7)O3 thin films (with the excess lead y=0.0 to 0.4) are investigated using low frequency small signal alternate current (AC) and direct current (DC) methods. Its temperature dependence shows two activation energies of 0.26 and 0.12 eV depending on temperature range and excess Pb levels. The former is associated with Pb3+ acceptor centers, while the latter could be due to a different defect level yet to be identified.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, PostScript.     Relicts of continental crust formed more than 3400 Ma ago are preserved fortuitously in most cratons. The cratons provide the most direct information about crust and mantle evolutionary processes during the first billion years of Earth history. In view of their polymetamorphic character, these terrains are commonly affected by subsequent tectonothermal events. Hence, their isotope systematics may be severely disturbed as a result of bulk chemical change or local isotopic homogenization. This leads to equivocal age and source information for different components within these terrains. The Sr and Nd isotopic data are presented for early Archean gneisses from the North Atlantic Craton in west Greenland and northern Labrador which were affected by younger metamorphic events

    NSW Corrective Services (CSNSW) engaged the Designing Out Crime (DOC) research centre to research and develop design concept for the development, design and construction of Intensive Learning Centres (ILC) for their correctional facilities. DOC compiled a UTS design team with expertise in architecture, industrial design, design thinking, environmental psychology and correctional environments. The central task for the design team is to respond to the design brief with a design concept that embodies the program principles and can be delivered by corrective services within the project parameters

    Development of semiconductor detectors for fast neutron radiography

    A high-energy neutron detector has been developed using a semiconductor diode fabricated from bulk gallium arsenide wafers with a polyethylene neutron converter layer. Typical thickness of the diode layer is 250 to 300 μm with bias voltages of 30 to 150 volts. Converter thicknesses up to 2030 μm have been tested. GaAs neutron detectors offer many advantages over existing detectors including positional information, directional dependence, gamma discrimination, radiation hardness, and spectral tailoring. Polyethylene-coated detectors have been shown to detect 14 MeV neutrons directly from a D-T neutron generator without interference from gamma rays or scattered neutrons. An array of small diode detectors can be assembled to perform fast neutron radiography with direct digital readout and real-time display of the image produced. In addition, because the detectors are insensitive to gamma rays and low energy neutrons, highly radioactive samples (such as spent nuclear fuel or transuranic waste drums) could be radiographed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87673/2/1118_1.pd

    Modelling the [Fe II]  λ1.644 μm outflow and comparison with H₂ and H+ kinematics in the inner 200 pc of NGC 1068

    We map the kinematics of the inner (200 pc) narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 using the instrument Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph and adaptive optics at the Gemini North telescope. Channel maps and position–velocity diagrams are presented at a spatial resolution of ≅8 pc and spectral resolution ∼5300 in the emission lines [Fe II] λ1.644 μm, H₂ λ2.122 μm and Brγ. The [Fe II] emission line provides a better coverage of the NLR outflow than the previously used [O III] λ5007 emission line, extending beyond the area of the bipolar cone observed in Brγ and [O III]. This is mainly due to the contribution of the redshifted channels to the north-east of the nucleus, supporting its origin in a partial ionized zone with additional contribution from shocks of the outflowing gas with the galactic disc. We modelled the kinematics and geometry of the [Fe II] emitting gas finding good agreement with the data for outflow models with conical and lemniscate (or hourglass) geometry. We calculate a mass outflow rate of 1.9⁺²ˍ₁ M⊙ yr⁻¹ but a power for the outflow of only 0.08 per cent LBol. The molecular (H₂) gas kinematics is completely distinct from that of [Fe II] and Brγ, showing radial expansion in an off-centred ∼100 pc radius ring in the galaxy plane. The expansion velocity decelerates from ≈200 km s−1 in the inner border of the ring to approximately zero at the outer border where our previous studies found a 10 Myr stellar population

    It is clear that for real and lasting change to occur and to be able to create a respectable youth justice system in the NT, a thorough re-evaluation of the purpose, practice and place of detention is required. This submission supports such a re-evaluation, by presenting some findings from our collective experience and expertise related to detention design and research. We provide a summary of literature that helps build an understanding of the current state of dysfunction in the juvenile detention system. Then, drawing on our own experiences working in this context, we suggest a new way of framing juvenile detention that allows and encourages young people to flourish. We offer this perspective for the Commission’s consideration to illustrate that there are many opportunities through which the NT juvenile justice system could be reshaped, rather than to provide definitive or exhaustive conclusions about the way that this should be done

    LittleDarwin: a Feature-Rich and Extensible Mutation Testing Framework for Large and Complex Java Systems

    Mutation testing is a well-studied method for increasing the quality of a test suite. We designed LittleDarwin as a mutation testing framework able to cope with large and complex Java software systems, while still being easily extensible with new experimental components. LittleDarwin addresses two existing problems in the domain of mutation testing: having a tool able to work within an industrial setting, and yet, be open to extension for cutting edge techniques provided by academia. LittleDarwin already offers higher-order mutation, null type mutants, mutant sampling, manual mutation, and mutant subsumption analysis.     The Status of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Dental Education

    The purpose of this study was to determine the current status of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) within academic dentistry. A twenty-two-item survey was distributed to faculty members of American Dental Education Association (ADEA) member schools asking about their awareness of SoTL practices, perceived barriers to SoTL application, and ways to enhance SoTL activity. Four hundred thirty surveys with equal distribution of assistant, associate, and full professors were received (this may be considered a response rate of 5.4 percent out of roughly 8,000 ADEA faculty members). Almost 70 percent of the respondents indicated that they highly valued SoTL; only 2.1 percent indicated they did not. The extent to which the respondents valued SoTL was positively correlated with their perception of SoTL’s value among other faculty members in their program (r(322)=0.374, p\u3c0.001), school (r(299)=0.204, p\u3c0.001), and institution (r(233)=0.296, p\u3c0.002). However, the respondents were generally unsure how SoTL was applied at their institutions. Respondents from private institutions reported making more SoTL presentations at conferences than did those from public institutions (t(303)=-2.761, p=0.006) and stronger promotion of SoTL in their institutional policies (t(330)=-3.004, p=0.003). Barriers to changing the perception and application of SoTL appeared to exist at both organizational and individual levels, and ADEA was perceived to be well positioned to assist with both
