Wishart and Anti-Wishart random matrices
We provide a compact exact representation for the distribution of the matrix
elements of the Wishart-type random matrices , for any finite
number of rows and columns of , without any large N approximations. In
particular we treat the case when the Wishart-type random matrix contains
redundant, non-random information, which is a new result. This representation
is of interest for a procedure of reconstructing the redundant information
hidden in Wishart matrices, with potential applications to numerous models

Human and environmental controls over aboveground carbon storage in Madagascar
Background: Accurate, high-resolution mapping of aboveground carbon density (ACD, Mg C ha-1) could provide insight into human and environmental controls over ecosystem state and functioning, and could support conservation and climate policy development. However, mapping ACD has proven challenging, particularly in spatially complex regions harboring a mosaic of land use activities, or in remote montane areas that are difficult to access and poorly understood ecologically. Using a combination of field measurements, airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and satellite data, we present the first large-scale, high-resolution estimates of aboveground carbon stocks in Madagascar. Results: We found that elevation and the fraction of photosynthetic vegetation (PV) cover, analyzed throughout forests of widely varying structure and condition, account for 27-67 % of the spatial variation in ACD. This finding facilitated spatial extrapolation of LiDAR-based carbon estimates to a total of 2,372,680 ha using satellite data. Remote, humid sub-montane forests harbored the highest carbon densities, while ACD was suppressed in dry spiny forests and in montane humid ecosystems, as well as in most lowland areas with heightened human activity. Independent of human activity, aboveground carbon stocks were subject to strong physiographic controls expressed through variation in tropical forest canopy structure measured using airborne LiDAR. Conclusions: High-resolution mapping of carbon stocks is possible in remote regions, with or without human activity, and thus carbon monitoring can be brought to highly endangered Malagasy forests as a climate-change mitigation and biological conservation strategy
On correlation functions of operators dual to classical spinning string states
We explore how to compute, classically at strong coupling, correlation
functions of local operators corresponding to classical spinning string states.
The picture we obtain is of `fattened' Witten diagrams, the evaluation of which
turns out to be surprisingly subtle and requires a modification of the naive
classical action due to a necessary projection onto appropriate wave functions.
We examine string solutions which compute the simplest case of a two-point
function and reproduce the right scaling with the anomalous dimensions
corresponding to the energies of the associated spinning string solutions. We
also describe, under some simplifying assumptions, how the spacetime dependence

Applicability of the kp method to modeling of InAs/GaSb short-period superlattices
We investigate the long-standing controversy surrounding modeling of the electronic spectra of InAs/GaSb short-period superlattices (SPSLs). Most commonly, such modeling for semiconductor heterostructures is based on the kp method. However, this method has so far failed to predict the band structure for type-II InAs/GaSb SPSLs. Instead, it has systematically overestimated the energy gap between the electron and heavy-hole minibands, which led to the suggestion that the kp method is inadequate for these heterostructures. Our results show that the physical origin of the discrepancy between modeling and experimental results may be the graded and asymmetric InAs/GaSb interface profile. We have performed band-structure modeling within the kp method using a realistic interface profile based on experimental observations. Our calculations show good agreement with experimental data, both from our own measurements and from the published literature. © 2009 The American Physical Society
International Student Migration: A Partial Identification Analysis
This paper studies the decision made by a family to invest in student migration. We propose an empirical structural decision model which reflects the importance of both the return to the investment and the budgetary constraint in the choice of the family. We circumvent the problem of endogeneity of the educational attainment by deriving sharp bounds and conduct inference for the parameters of interest. The data are collected on students from Cameroon, using a new snowball sampling procedure, which allow the inclusion of both migrants and non-migrants in the sample. We propose bias corrected estimators for this procedure. We study the characteristics of potential candidates to migration that increase or decrease their probability to migrate, accounting for a potential helper in the diaspora. Among the interesting results we find that a choice to complete a Master's degree doubles the odds of migration, there is little evidence of gender preference, students migrants are positively selected on their previous academic results
Correlation functions of three heavy operators - the AdS contribution
We consider operators in N=4 SYM theory which are dual, at strong coupling,
to classical strings rotating in S^5. Three point correlation functions of such
operators factorize into a universal contribution coming from the AdS part of
the string sigma model and a state-dependent S^5 contribution. Consequently a
similar factorization arises for the OPE coefficients. In this paper we
evaluate the AdS universal factor of the OPE coefficients which is explicitly

Explaining gender differences in non-fatal suicidal behaviour among adolescents: a population-based study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people in most industrial countries, non-fatal suicidal behaviour is also a very important public health concern among adolescents. The aim of this study was to investigate gender differences in prevalence and emotional and behavioural correlates of suicidal behaviour in a representative school-based sample of adolescents.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional design was used to assess suicidal behaviour and various areas of emotional and behavioural problems by using a self-report booklet including the Youth Self-Report. One hundred sixteen schools in a region of Southern Germany agreed to participate. A representative sample of 5,512 ninth-grade students was studied. Mean age was 14.8 years (SD 0.73); 49.8% were female.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Serious suicidal thoughts were reported by 19.8% of the female students and 10.8% of the females had ever attempted suicide. In the male group, 9.3% had a history of suicidal thoughts and 4.9% had previously attempted suicide. Internalizing emotional and behavioural problems were shown to be higher in the female group (difference of the group means 4.41) while externalizing emotional and behavioural problems slightly predominated in male students (difference of the group means -0.65). However, the total rate of emotional and behavioural problems was significantly higher in the adolescent female group (difference of the group means 4.98). Using logistic regression models with suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide as dependent variables, the pseudo-R<sup>2</sup> of gender alone was only 2.7% or 2.3%, while it was 30% or 23.2% for emotional and behavioural problems measured by the YSR syndrome scales. By adding gender to the emotional and behavioural problems only an additional 0.3% of information could be explained.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The findings suggest that gender differences in non-fatal suicidal behaviour among adolescents can to a large extent be explained by the gender differences in emotional and behavioural problems during this age.</p

Financing Student Migration: Evidence for a Commitment Problem
This paper develops and tests a model of profit-sharing arrangement over returns to a student migration investment. Taking advantage of a unique dataset on Cameroonian students, I find evidence of non-commitment bargaining between student, parents and an outside helper. The commitment problem arises because the coalition of parents and student has strong incentives not to abide by the outcome of the ex ante negotiation with the helper. This finding suggests some inefficiency of the decision process, in that students from credit-constrained families might not benefit from the support of a helper, even though the returns to their migration can be significant
