Synthesis of SmFeAsO by an Easy and Versatile Route and its Physical Property Characterization

We report synthesis, structure, electrical transport and heat capacity of SmFeAsO. The title compound is synthesized by one-step encapsulation of stoichiometric FeAs, Sm, and Sm2O3 in an evacuated (10-5 Torr) quartz tube by prolong (72 hours) annealing at 1100oC. The as synthesized compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with P4/nmm space group having lattice parameters a = 3.93726(33) A and c = 8.49802(07) A. The resistance (R-T) measurements on the compound exhibited ground state spin-density-wave (SDW)-like metallic steps below 140 K. Heat capacity CP(T) measurements on the title compound, showed an anomaly at around 140 K, which is reminiscent of the SDW ordering of the compound. At lower temperatures the CP(T) shows a clear peak at around 4.5 K. At lower temperature below 20 K, Cp(T) is also measured under an applied field of 7 Tesla. It is concluded that the CP(T) peak at 4.5 K is due to the anti-ferromagnetic(AFM) ordering of Sm3+ spins. These results are in confirmation with ordering of Sm in Sm2-xCexCuO4.Comment: 9 pages Text + Figs Contact Author ([email protected]

Scale Factor Duality: A Quantum Cosmological Approach

    Get PDF
We consider the minisuperspace model arising from the lowest order string effective action containing the graviton and the dilaton and study solutions of the resulting Wheeler-Dewitt equation. The scale factor duality symmetry is discussed in the context of our quantum cosmological model.Comment: 10 pages, plain tex, uses panda.tex (appended

Non-dissipative Thermal Transport and Magnetothermal Effect for the Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Chain

Anomalous magnetothermal effects are discussed in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. The energy current is related to one of the non-trivial conserved quantities underlying integrability and therefore both the diagonal and off diagonal dynamical correlations of spin and energy current diverge. The energy-energy and spin-energy current correlations at finite temperatures are exactly calculated by a lattice path integral formulation. The low-temperature behavior of the thermomagnetic (magnetic Seebeck) coefficient is also discussed. Due to effects of strong correlations, we observe the magnetic Seebeck coefficient changes sign at certain interaction strengths and magnetic fields.Comment: 4 pages, references added, typos corrected, Conference proceedings of SPQS 2004, Sendai, Japa

Determining fundamental parameters from the chargino sector in Left-Right Supersymmetric models

Analytical expressions relating the fundamental parameters describing the chargino sector in the context of the Left-Right Supersymmetric model are constructed. A general complex extension of the real non-symmetric chargino mass matrix including all possible CP-violating phases is considered. The method used for such a effects is the projector formalism based on the explicit knowledge of two unitary matrices diagonalizing the chargino mass matrix. Some possible scenarios allowing us to extract analytical and numerical values for the unknown parameters are considered. Moreover, an algorithm allowing us to disentangle the fundamental parameters of the chargino sector, based on possible measurements of some class of cross-section observables related to the chargino pair production in e+ee^+ e^- annihilation processes, is described. Some comparisons with the corresponding results in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are given.Comment: 48 pages, 13 figure

    Locality, Causality and Noncommutative Geometry

We analyse the causality condition in noncommutative field theory and show that the nonlocality of noncommutative interaction leads to a modification of the light cone to the light wedge. This effect is generic for noncommutative geometry. We also check that the usual form of energy condition is violated and propose that a new form is needed in noncommutative spacetime. On reduction from light cone to light wedge, it looks like the noncommutative dimensions are effectively washed out and suggests a reformulation of noncommutative field theory in terms of lower dimensional degree of freedom. This reduction of dimensions due to noncommutative geometry could play a key role in explaining the holographic property of quantum gravity.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, 4 figure

On the unitarity problem in space/time noncommutative theories

It is shown that the violation of unitarity observed in space/time noncommutative field theories is due to an improper definition of quantum field theory on noncommutative spacetime.Comment: 7 pages; typos corrected, sign convention changed on p.

Strongly interacting WW bosons and supersymmetry

We present arguments in favor of the idea that supersymmetric sigma models with compact symmetric K\"ahler spaces as target manifolds have a second-order phase transition in four dimensions. When applied to electroweak symmetry breaking, these models then do not require a light Higgs boson or techni-resonances but predict fermionic superpartners of longitudinal W's and Z with masses at or below TeV scale. Presence of the phase transition leads to a fractional-power energy dependence of fixed-angle scattering amplitude of longitudinal W's and Z's at high energies.Comment: 8 pages, LATEX, UCLA/93/TEP/2

Euler number of Instanton Moduli space and Seiberg-Witten invariants

    Get PDF
We show that a partition function of topological twisted N=4 Yang-Mills theory is given by Seiberg-Witten invariants on a Riemannian four manifolds under the condition that the sum of Euler number and signature of the four manifolds vanish. The partition function is the sum of Euler number of instanton moduli space when it is possible to apply the vanishing theorem. And we get a relation of Euler number labeled by the instanton number kk with Seiberg-Witten invariants, too. All calculation in this paper is done without assuming duality.Comment: LaTeX, 34 page
