Response of Bose gases in time-dependent optical superlattices

The dynamic response of ultracold Bose gases in one-dimensional optical lattices and superlattices is investigated based on exact numerical time evolutions in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model. The system is excited by a temporal amplitude modulation of the lattice potential, as it was done in recent experiments. For regular lattice potentials, the dynamic signatures of the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition are studied and the position and the fine-structure of the resonances is explained by a linear response analysis. Using direct simulations and the perturbative analysis it is shown that in the presence of a two-colour superlattice the excitation spectrum changes significantly when going from the homogeneous Mott-insulator the quasi Bose-glass phase. A characteristic and experimentally accessible signature for the quasi Bose-glass is the appearance of low-lying resonances and a suppression of the dominant resonance of the Mott-insulator phase.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures; added references and corrected typo

Jet directions in Seyfert galaxies: B and I imaging data

We present the results of broad-band B and I imaging observations for a sample of 88 Seyfert galaxies (29 Seyfert 1's and 59 Seyfert 2's), selected from a mostly isotropic property, the flux at 60μ\mum. We also present the B and I imaging results for an additional sample of 20 Seyfert galaxies (7 Seyfert 1's and 13 Seyfert 2's), selected from the literature and known to have extended radio emission. The I band images are fitted with ellipses to determine the position angle and ellipticity of the host galaxy major axis. This information will be used in a future paper, combined with information from radio observations, to study the orientation of radio jets relative to the plane of their host galaxies (Kinney et al. 2000). Here we present surface brightness profiles and magnitudes in the B and I bands, as well as mean ellipticities and major axis position angles.Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, June 2000. 48 pages, 7 tables, 19 gif and 11 postscript figures. Positive Solutions of Quasilinear Boundary Value Problems

AbstractThis paper deals with the existence of positive solutions for the boundary value problem[formula][formula]wherefis either φ-superlinear or φ-sublinear at ∞ andf(t,0) may be negative andpis a positive continuous function. The results extend several known results for semilinear equations. Our approach is based on fixed point theory for completely continuous operators which leave invariant a suitable cone in a Banach space of continuous functions

Heat capacity of α\alpha-GaN: Isotope Effects

Until recently, the heat capacity of GaN had only been measured for polycrystalline powder samples. Semiempirical as well as \textit{first-principles} calculations have appeared within the past few years. We present in this article measurements of the heat capacity of hexagonal single crystals of GaN in the 20-1400K temperature range. We find that our data deviate significantly from the literature values for polycrystalline materials. The dependence of the heat capacity on the isotopic mass has also been investigated recently for monatomic crystals such as diamond, silicon, and germanium. Multi-atomic crystals are expected to exhibit a different dependence of these heat capacities on the masses of each of the isotopes present. These effects have not been investigated in the past. We also present \textit{first-principles} calculations of the dependence of the heat capacities of GaN, as a canonical binary material, on each of the Ga and N masses. We show that they are indeed different, as expected from the fact that the Ga mass affects mainly the acoustic, that of N the optic phonons. It is hoped that these calculations will encourage experimental measurements of the dependence of the heat capacity on isotopic masses in binary and more complex semiconductors.Comment: 12 pages, 5 Figures, submitted to PR

    A Low-cost Multi-channel Analogue Signal Generator

    Get PDF
A scalable multi-channel analogue signal generator is presented. It uses a commercial low-cost graphics card with multiple outputs in a standard PC as signal source. Each color signal serves as independent channel to generate an analogue signal. A custom-built external PCB was developed to adjust the graphics card output voltage levels for a specific task, which needed differential signals. The system furthermore comprises a software package to program the signal shape. The signal generator was successfully used as independent test bed for the ATLAS Level-1 Trigger Pre-Processor, providing up to 16 analogue signals

    Liquorproteine bei der Neuromyelitis optica

    Get PDF
