The Spin--Symmetry of the Quark Model
Corrections to the exact heavy--quark symmetry results are expected to follow
the mass effect of the heavy--quark. We show, by an explicit
calculation, that there is something other than the mass effect that suppresses
the breaking of the spin symmetry
An efficient hybrid model and dynamic performance analysis for multihop wireless networks
Multihop wireless networks can be subjected to nonstationary phenomena due to a dynamic network topology and time varying traffic. However, the simulation techniques used to study multihop wireless networks focus on the steady-state performance even though transient or nonstationary periods will often occur. Moreover, the majority of the simulators suffer from poor scalability. In this paper, we develop an efficient performance modeling technique for analyzing the time varying queueing behavior of multihop wireless networks. The one-hop packet transmission (service) time is assumed to be deterministic, which could be achieved by contention-free transmission, or approximated in sparse or lightly loaded multihop wireless networks. Our model is a hybrid of time varying adjacency matrix and fluid flow based differential equations, which represent dynamic topology changes and nonstationary network queues, respectively. Numerical experiments show that the hybrid fluid based model can provide reasonably accurate results much more efficiently than standard simulators. Also an example application of the modeling technique is given showing the nonstationary network performance as a function of node mobility, traffic load and wireless link quality. © 2013 IEEE
Fokker-Planck equations for nonlinear dynamical systems driven by non-Gaussian Levy processes
The Fokker-Planck equations describe time evolution of probability densities
of stochastic dynamical systems and are thus widely used to quantify random
phenomena such as uncertainty propagation. For dynamical systems driven by
non-Gaussian L\'evy processes, however, it is difficult to obtain explicit
forms of Fokker-Planck equations because the adjoint operators of the
associated infinitesimal generators usually do not have exact formulation. In
the present paper, Fokker- Planck equations are derived in terms of infinite
series for nonlinear stochastic differential equations with non-Gaussian L\'evy
processes. A few examples are presented to illustrate the method.Comment: 14 page
Coherent molecular bound states of bosons and fermions near a Feshbach resonance
We analyze molecular bound states of atomic quantum gases near a Feshbach
resonance. A simple, renormalizable field theoretic model is shown to have
exact solutions in the two-body sector, whose binding energy agrees well with
observed experimental results in both Bosonic and Fermionic cases. These
solutions, which interpolate between BEC and BCS theories, also provide a more
general variational ansatz for resonant superfluidity and related problems.Comment: Minor changes -- to match the final published versio
A Graph-Based Approach to Address Trust and Reputation in Ubiquitous Networks
The increasing popularity of virtual computing environments such as Cloud and Grid computing is helping to drive the realization of ubiquitous and pervasive computing. However, as computing becomes more entrenched in everyday life, the concepts of trust and risk become increasingly important. In this paper, we propose a new graph-based theoretical approach to address trust and reputation in complex ubiquitous networks. We formulate trust as a function of quality of a task and time required to authenticate agent-to-agent relationship based on the Zero-Common Knowledge (ZCK) authentication scheme. This initial representation applies a graph theory concept, accompanied by a mathematical formulation of trust metrics. The approach we propose increases awareness and trustworthiness to agents based on the values estimated for each requested task, we conclude by stating our plans for future work in this area
Balancing the Tradeoff between Profit and Fairness in Rideshare Platforms During High-Demand Hours
Rideshare platforms, when assigning requests to drivers, tend to maximize profit for the system and/or minimize waiting time for riders. Such platforms can exacerbate biases that drivers may have over certain types of requests. We consider the case of peak hours when the demand for rides is more than the supply of drivers. Drivers are well aware of their advantage during the peak hours and can choose to be selective about which rides to accept. Moreover, if in such a scenario, the assignment of requests to drivers (by the platform) is made only to maximize profit and/or minimize wait time for riders, requests of a certain type (e.g. from a non-popular pickup location, or to a non-popular drop-off location) might never be assigned to a driver. Such a system can be highly unfair to riders. However, increasing fairness might come at a cost of the overall profit made by the rideshare platform. To balance these conflicting goals, we present a flexible, non-adaptive algorithm, \lpalg, that allows the platform designer to control the profit and fairness of the system via parameters and respectively. We model the matching problem as an online bipartite matching where the set of drivers is offline and requests arrive online. Upon the arrival of a request, we use \lpalg to assign it to a driver (the driver might then choose to accept or reject it) or reject the request. We formalize the measures of profit and fairness in our setting and show that by using \lpalg, the competitive ratios for profit and fairness measures would be no worse than and respectively. Extensive experimental results on both real-world and synthetic datasets confirm the validity of our theoretical lower bounds. Additionally, they show that \lpalg under some choice of can beat two natural heuristics, Greedy and Uniform, on \emph{both} fairness and profit
A time dependent performance model for multihop wireless networks with CBR traffic
In this paper, we develop a performance modeling technique for analyzing the time varying network layer queueing behavior of multihop wireless networks with constant bit rate traffic. Our approach is a hybrid of fluid flow queueing modeling and a time varying connectivity matrix. Network queues are modeled using fluid-flow based differential equation models which are solved using numerical methods, while node mobility is modeled using deterministic or stochastic modeling of adjacency matrix elements. Numerical and simulation experiments show that the new approach can provide reasonably accurate results with significant improvements in the computation time compared to standard simulation tools. © 2010 IEEE
Learning-aided Stochastic Network Optimization with Imperfect State Prediction
We investigate the problem of stochastic network optimization in the presence
of imperfect state prediction and non-stationarity. Based on a novel
distribution-accuracy curve prediction model, we develop the predictive
learning-aided control (PLC) algorithm, which jointly utilizes historic and
predicted network state information for decision making. PLC is an online
algorithm that requires zero a-prior system statistical information, and
consists of three key components, namely sequential distribution estimation and
change detection, dual learning, and online queue-based control.
Specifically, we show that PLC simultaneously achieves good long-term
performance, short-term queue size reduction, accurate change detection, and
fast algorithm convergence. In particular, for stationary networks, PLC
achieves a near-optimal , utility-delay
tradeoff. For non-stationary networks, \plc{} obtains an
utility-backlog tradeoff for distributions that last
time, where
is the prediction accuracy and is a constant (the
Backpressue algorithm \cite{neelynowbook} requires an length
for the same utility performance with a larger backlog). Moreover, PLC detects
distribution change slots faster with high probability ( is the
prediction size) and achieves an convergence time. Our results demonstrate
that state prediction (even imperfect) can help (i) achieve faster detection
and convergence, and (ii) obtain better utility-delay tradeoffs
