    Nanoscale density fluctuations in swift heavy ion irradiated amorphous SiO2

    We report on the observation of nanoscale density fluctuations in 2 μm thick amorphous SiO₂ layers irradiated with 185 MeV Au ions. At high fluences, in excess of approximately 5 × 10¹² ions/cm², where the surface is completely covered by ion tracks, synchrotron small angle x-ray scattering measurements reveal the existence of a steady state of density fluctuations. In agreement with molecular dynamics simulations, this steady state is consistent with an ion track “annihilation” process, where high-density regions generated in the periphery of new tracks fill in low-density regions located at the center of existing tracks.The authors acknowledge the Australian Research Council and the Australian Synchrotron Research Program for financial support and thank the staff at the ANU Heavy Ion facility for their continued technical assistance.     Chemical identification of luminescence due to Sn and Sb in ZnO

    We show that the I10 line in ZnO photoluminescence is associated with Sn impurities. The evidence comes from material implanted with radioactive 117Ag, which decays through 117Cd and 117In to stable 117Sn, and 121Ag which decays through the same chain to stable 121Sb. Supporting evidence is provided by ZnO:Sn prepared by the in-diffusion of stable Sn. The I2 and I9 lines are also shown conclusively to be due to In, confirming earlier identifications in the literature. We also observe shallow bound exciton emission at 3.3643(3) eV due to Sb impurities produced at the end of the decay chain of 121Ag

    A study of drop-coated and chemical bath-deposited buffer layers for vapour phase deposition of large area, aligned, zinc oxide nanorod arrays

    Zinc oxide films derived from drop-coating solutions of zinc acetate in ethanol followed by chemical bath deposition were examined for their suitability as buffer layers for high temperature vapour phase deposition of large area, aligned, zinc oxide nanorod arrays. An XPS analysis of substrates drop coated with zinc acetate solutions clarifies the chemistry of the deposition mechanism of the initial acetate-derived ZnO seeds. SEM, AFM and white light profilometry studies show that while zinc acetate-derived buffer layers are suitable for chemical bath deposition of aligned zinc oxide nanorod arrays, during high temperature vapour phase depositions these buffer layers undergo substantial changes leading to a loss of nanorod alignment and poor substrate coverage. We present a method to deposit aligned zinc oxide nanorod arrays uniformly over large area substrates, which combines zinc acetate drop coating, chemical bath deposition of buffer layers and vapour phase transport deposition of nanorods

    GPs’ strategies in exploring the preschool child’s wellbeing in the paediatric consultation

    Background: Although General Practitioners (GPs) are uniquely placed to identify children with emotional, social, and behavioural problems, they succeed in identifying only a small number of them. The aim of this article is to explore the strategies, methods, and tools employed by GPs in the assessment of the preschool child’s emotional, mental, social, and behavioural health. We look at how GPs address parental care of the child in general and in situations where GPs have a particular awareness of the child. Method: Twenty-eight Danish GPs were purposively selected to take part in a qualitative study which combined focus-group discussions, observation of child consultations, and individual interviews with GPs. Results: Analysis of the data suggests that GPs have developed a set of methods, and strategies to assess the preschool child and parental care of the child. They look beyond paying narrow attention to the physical health of the child and they have expanded their practice to include the relations and interactions in the consultation room. The physical examination of the child continues to play a central role in doctor-child communication. Conclusion: The participating GPs’ strategies helped them to assess the wellbeing of the preschool child but they often find it difficult to share their impressions with parents

    Mobile phone app aimed at improving iron intake and bioavailability in premenopausal women: a qualitative evaluation

    BACKGROUND: Low iron intake can lead to iron deficiency, which can result in impaired health and iron-deficiency anemia. A mobile phone app, combining successful dietary strategies to increase bioavailable iron with strategies for behavior change, such as goal setting, monitoring, feedback, and resources for knowledge acquisition, was developed with the aim to increase bioavailable iron intake in premenopausal women. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the content, usability, and acceptability of a mobile phone app designed to improve intake of bioavailable dietary iron. METHODS: Women aged 18-50 years with an Android mobile phone were invited to participate. Over a 2-week period women were asked to interact with the app. Following this period, semistructured focus groups with participants were conducted. Focus groups were audio recorded and analyzed via an inductive open-coding method using the qualitative analysis software NVivo 10. Themes were identified and frequency of code occurrence was calculated. RESULTS: Four focus groups (n=26) were conducted (age range 19-36 years, mean 24.7, SD 5.2). Two themes about the app\u27s functionality were identified (frequency of occurrence in brackets): interface and design (134) and usability (86). Four themes about the app\u27s components were identified: goal tracker (121), facts (78), photo diary (40), and games (46). A number of suggestions to improve the interface and design of the app were provided and will inform the ongoing development of the app. CONCLUSIONS: This research indicates that participants are interested in iron and their health and are willing to use an app utilizing behavior change strategies to increase intake of bioavailable iron. The inclusion of information about the link between diet and health, monitoring and tracking of the achievement of dietary goals, and weekly reviews of goals were also seen as valuable components of the app and should be considered in mobile health apps aimed at adult women

    Quiescience as a mechanism for cyclical hypoxia and acidosis

    Tumour tissue characteristically experiences fluctuations in substrate supply. This unstable microenvironment drives constitutive metabolic changes within cellular populations and, ultimately, leads to a more aggressive phenotype. Previously, variations in substrate levels were assumed to occur through oscillations in the hĂŚmodynamics of nearby and distant blood vessels. In this paper we examine an alternative hypothesis, that cycles of metabolite concentrations are also driven by cycles of cellular quiescence and proliferation. Using a mathematical modelling approach, we show that the interdependence between cell cycle and the microenvironment will induce typical cycles with the period of order hours in tumour acidity and oxygenation. As a corollary, this means that the standard assumption of metabolites entering diffusive equilibrium around the tumour is not valid; instead temporal dynamics must be considered

    On the binary nature of 1RXS J162848.1-415241

    We present spectroscopy of the optical counterpart to 1RXS J162848.1-41524, also known as the microquasar candidate MCQC J162847-4152. All the data indicate that this X-ray source is not a microquasar, and that it is a single-lined chromospherically active binary system with a likely orbital period of 4.9 days. Our analysis supports a K3IV spectral classification for the star, which is dominant at optical wavelengths. The unseen binary component is most likely a late-type (K7-M) dwarf or a white dwarf. Using the high resolution spectra we have measured the K3 star's rotational broadening to be vsini = 43 +/- 3 km/s and determined a lower limit to the binary mass ratio of q(=M2/M1)>2.0. The high rotational broadening together with the strong CaII H & K / Halpha emission and high-amplitude photometric variations indicate that the evolved star is very chromospherically active and responsible for the X-ray/radio emission.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy of magnetite (110) surfaces

    Reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS) has been used to measure the optical anisotropies of bulk and thin-film Fe3O4(110) surfaces. The spectra indicate that small shifts in energy of the optical transitions, associated with anisotropic strain or electric field gradients caused by the (110) surface termination or a native oxide layer, are responsible for the strong signal observed. The RAS response was then measured as a function of temperature. A distinct change in the RAS line-shape amplitude was observed in the spectral range from 0.8 to 1.6 eV for temperatures below the Verwey transition of the crystal. Finally, thin-film magnetite was grown by molecular beam epitaxy on MgO(110) substrates. Changes in the RAS spectra were found for different film thickness, suggesting that RAS can be used to monitor the growth of magnetite (110) films in situ. The thickness dependence of the RAS is discussed in terms of various models for the origin of the RAS signal

    Systems biologists seek fuller integration of systems biology approaches in new cancer research programs

    Systems biology takes an interdisciplinary approach to the systematic study of complex interactions in biological systems. This approach seeks to decipher the emergent behaviors of complex systems rather than focusing only on their constituent properties. As an increasing number of examples illustrate the value of systems biology approaches to understand the initiation, progression, and treatment of cancer, systems biologists from across Europe and the United States hope for changes in the way their field is currently perceived among cancer researchers. In a recent EU-US workshop, supported by the European Commission, the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, and the National Cancer Institute of the NIH, the participants discussed the strengths, weaknesses, hurdles, and opportunities in cancer systems biology
