Positivity in the presence of initial system-environment correlation

    Get PDF
The constraints imposed by the initial system-environment correlation can lead to nonpositive Dynamical maps. We find the conditions for positivity and complete positivity of such dynamical maps by using the concept of an assignment map. Any initial system-environment correlations make the assignment map nonpositive, while the positivity of the dynamical map depends on the interplay between the assignment map and the system-environment coupling. We show how this interplay can reveal or hide the nonpositivity of the assignment map. We discuss the role of this interplay in Markovian models.Comment: close to the published version. 5 pages, 1 figur

Celebrating Diversity through Spirituality in the Workplace: Transforming Organizations Holistically

    Get PDF
Managing diversity effectively is the key to attract and retain a productive workforce. Research demonstrates that celebrating diversity leads to greater productivity, increased creativity, and heightened morale and motivation. Organizations often benefit from the differing perspectives and rich experiences a diverse workforce provides. Similarly, organizations can enhance their creativity by encouraging diverse perspectives and opinions. Thus, issues of managing diversity, valuing diversity, and celebrating diversity have assumed added importance. This paper suggests that diversity is not a problem, but rather a solution to most of the challenges organizations face such as employee engagement and participation. Managing workforce diversity effectively transcends meeting a company’s legal requirements and complying with equal opportunity and non-discrimination regulation. Leaders need to understand and deal constructively with their own biases and prejudices that hinder diversity. Celebrating diversity is the extension of healthy spirituality that leads us to celebrate our differences and view diversity as different manifestations of the underlying Unity that permeates every phenomenon. This paper discusses key advantages of celebrating diversity, pinpoints barriers to organizational diversity, and offers some perspectives to overcome barriers to inclusiveness

    Foundations of Quantum Discord

This paper summarizes the basics of the notion of quantum discord and how it relates to other types of correlations in quantum physics. We take the fundamental information theoretic approach and illustrate our exposition with a number of simple examples.Comment: 3 pages, special issue edited by Diogo de Oliveira Soares Pinto et a

What Are Optimal Blood Pressure Targets for Patients with Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease?

    Get PDF
To maximize the risk benefit ratio of blood pressure control in people with chronic kidney diseases (CKD), a number of guidelines provide recommendations on optimal blood pressure (BP) targets in CKD. This review examines these guidelines, their supporting evidence base, and generalizability and limitations of current standards of care. Over the years, the BP targets are liberalized. They now focus on the usual BP target of 300 mg/g creatinine, low-quality evidence suggests targeting BP to <130/90 mmHg. Individualization of BP lowering is a key based on comorbid conditions, response to treatment, and level of kidney function. Consideration of out of clinic BP monitoring either implemented by home BP recordings or ambulatory BP measurements may enhance BP control

On the rupture of DNA molecule

Using Langevin Dynamic simulations, we study effects of the shear force on the rupture of a double stranded DNA molecule. The model studied here contains two single diblock copolymers interacting with each other. The elastic constants of individual segments of the diblock copolymer are considered to be different. We showed that the magnitude of the rupture force depends on whether the force is applied at 333'-3'-ends or 555'-5'-ends. Distributions of extension in hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds along the chain show the striking differences. Motivated by recent experiments, we have also calculated the variation of rupture force for different chain lengths. Results obtained from simulations have been validated with the analytical calculation based on the ladder model of DNA.Comment: 7 pages and 4 figure

Measuring Energy Poverty: Focusing on What Matters

    Get PDF
The provision of modern energy services is recognised as a critical foundation for sustainable development, and is central to the everyday lives of people. Effective policies to dramatically expand modern energy access need to be grounded in a robust information-base. Metrics that can be used for comparative purposes and to track progress towards targets therefore represent an essential support tool. This paper reviews the relevant literature, and discusses the adequacy and applicability of existing instruments to measure energy poverty. Drawing on those insights, it proposes a new composite index to measure energy poverty. Both the associated methodology and initial results for several African countries are discussed. Whereas most existing indicators and composite indices focus on assessing the access to energy, or the degree of development related to energy, our new index – the Multidimensional Energy Poverty Index (MEPI) – focuses on the deprivation of access to modern energy services. It captures both the incidence and intensity of energy poverty, and provides a new tool to support policymaking.

Quantum Correlations in Multipartite Quantum Systems

We review some concepts and properties of quantum correlations, in particular multipartite measures, geometric measures and monogamy relations. We also discuss the relation between classical and total correlationsComment: to be published as a chapter of the book "Lectures on general quantum correlations and their applications" edited by F.
