Nuclear Effects in Neutrino Induced Coherent Pion Production at K2K and MiniBooNE Neutrino Energies
The coherent pion production induced by neutrinos in nuclei is studied using
a delta hole model in local density approximation taking into account the
renormalization of properties in a nuclear medium. The pion absorption
effects have been included in an eikonal approximation. These effects give a
large reduction in the total cross section. The numerical results for the total
cross section are found to be consistent with recent experimental results from
K2K and MiniBooNE collaborations and other older experiments in the
intermediate energy region.Comment: 4pages, 5figure
Enantioselective Total Synthesis of Macfarlandin C, a Spongian Diterpenoid Harboring a Concave-Substituted cis-Dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octanone Fragment.
The enantioselective total synthesis of the rearranged spongian diterpenoid (-)-macfarlandin C is reported. This is the first synthesis of a rearranged spongian diterpenoid in which the bulky hydrocarbon fragment is joined via a quaternary carbon to the highly hindered concave face of the cis-2,8-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octan-3-one moiety. The strategy involves a late-stage fragment coupling between a tertiary carbon radical and an electrophilic butenolide resulting in the stereoselective formation of vicinal quaternary and tertiary stereocenters. A stereoselective Mukaiyama hydration that orients a pendant carboxymethyl side chain cis to the bulky octahydronapthalene substituent was pivotal in fashioning the challenging concave-substituted cis-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octanone fragment
Magnetic flux pumping in 3D nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic simulations
A self-regulating magnetic flux pumping mechanism in tokamaks that maintains
the core safety factor at , thus preventing sawteeth, is analyzed
in nonlinear 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations using the M3D-C code. In
these simulations, the most important mechanism responsible for the flux
pumping is that a saturated quasi-interchange instability generates
an effective negative loop voltage in the plasma center via a dynamo effect. It
is shown that sawtoothing is prevented in the simulations if is
sufficiently high to provide the necessary drive for the
instability that generates the dynamo loop voltage. The necessary amount of
dynamo loop voltage is determined by the tendency of the current density
profile to centrally peak which, in our simulations, is controlled by the
peakedness of the applied heat source profile.Comment: submitted to Physics of Plasmas (23 pages, 15 Figures
Soft Finger Model with Adaptive Contact Geometry for Grasping and Manipulation Tasks
This paper presents a method for building analytical contact models for soft fingers. Friction constraints are derived based on general expressions for non-planar contacts of elastic bodies, taking into account the local geometry and structure of the objects in contact. These constraints are then formulated as a linear complementarity problem, the solution of which provides the normal and frictional forces applied at each contact, as well as the relative velocity of the bodies involved. This approach captures frictional effects such as coupling between tangential force and frictional torque. We illustrate this method by analyzing manipulation tasks performed by an anthropomorphic robotic hand equipped with soft fingerpads
