Phase Mixing of Alfvén Waves Near a 2D Magnetic Null Point
The propagation of linear Alfvén wave pulses in an inhomogeneous plasma near a 2D coronal null point is investigated. When a uniform plasma density is considered, it is seen that an initially planar Alfvén wavefront remains planar, despite the varying equilibrium Alfvén speed, and that all the wave collects at the separatrices. Thus, in the non-ideal case, these Alfvénic disturbances preferentially dissipate their energy at these locations. For a non-uniform equilibrium density, it is found that the Alfvén wavefront is significantly distorted away from the initially planar geometry, inviting the possibility of dissipation due to phase mixing. Despite this however, we conclude that for the Alfvén wave, current density accumulation and preferential heating still primarily occur at the separatrices, even when an extremely non-uniform density profile is considered
Induced antiferromagnetism and large magnetoresistances in RuSr2(Nd,Y,Ce)2Cu2O10-d ruthenocuprates
RuSr2(Nd,Y,Ce)2Cu2O10-d ruthenocuprates have been studied by neutron
diffraction, magnetotransport and magnetisation measurements and the electronic
phase diagram is reported. Separate Ru and Cu spin ordering transitions are
observed, with spontaneous Cu antiferromagnetic order for low hole doping
levels p, and a distinct, induced-antiferromagnetic Cu spin phase in the 0.02 <
p < 0.06 pseudogap region. This ordering gives rise to large negative
magnetoresistances which vary systematically with p in the
RuSr2Nd1.8-xY0.2CexCu2O10-d series. A collapse of the magnetoresistance (MR)
and magnetisation in the pre-superconducting region may signify the onset of
superconducting fluctuations.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figure

Gamma-Ray Bursts Black hole accretion disks as a site for the vp-process
We study proton rich nucleosynthesis in windlike outflows from gamma-ray
bursts accretion disks with the aim to determine if such outflows are a site of
the vp-process. The efficacy of this vp-process depends on thermodynamic and
hydrodynamic factors. We discuss the importance of the entropy of the material,
the outflow rate, the initial ejection point and accretion rate of the disk. In
some cases the vp-process pushes the nucleosynthesis out to A~100 and produces
light p-nuclei. However, even when these nuclei are not produced, neutrino
induced interactions can significantly alter the abundance pattern and cannot
be neglected.Comment: 9 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Molecular dynamics simulations of an anomalous response of diamond to shock compression
We performed molecular dynamics simulations of shock wave propagation in diamond in the [110] crystallographic direction and observed an anomalous response of the material. This regime is characterized by absence of plastic deformation in the intermediate interval of shock wave intensities between shear-deformation and overdriven rehybridization shock wave regimes
Neutron capture rates and r-process nucleosynthesis
Simulations of r-process nucleosynthesis require nuclear physics information
for thousands of neutron-rich nuclear species from the line of stability to the
neutron drip line. While arguably the most important pieces of nuclear data for
the r-process are the masses and beta decay rates, individual neutron capture
rates can also be of key importance in setting the final r-process abundance
pattern. Here we consider the influence of neutron capture rates in forming the
A~80 and rare earth peaks.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, appears in the Proceedings of the 14th

Single-photon single ionization of W ions: experiment and theory
Experimental and theoretical results are reported for photoionization of
Ta-like (W) tungsten ions. Absolute cross sections were measured in the
energy range 16 to 245 eV employing the photon-ion merged-beam setup at the
Advanced Light Source in Berkeley. Detailed photon-energy scans at 100 meV
bandwidth were performed in the 16 to 108 eV range. In addition, the cross
section was scanned at 50 meV resolution in regions where fine resonance
structures could be observed. Theoretical results were obtained from a
Dirac-Coulomb R-matrix approach. Photoionization cross section calculations
were performed for singly ionized atomic tungsten ions in their , =1/2, ground level and the associated
excited metastable levels with =3/2, 5/2, 7/2 and 9/2. Since the ion beams
used in the experiments must be expected to contain long-lived excited states
also from excited configurations, additional cross-section calculations were
performed for the second-lowest term, 5d^5 \; ^6{\rm S}_{J}, =5/2, and for
the F term, 5d^3 6s^2 \; ^4{\rm F}_{J}, with = 3/2, 5/2, 7/2 and 9/2.
Given the complexity of the electronic structure of W the calculations
reproduce the main features of the experimental cross section quite well.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures, 1 table: Accepted for publication in J. Phys. B:

Exploring Flaring Behaviour on Low Mass Stars, Solar-type Stars and the Sun
We report on our project to study the activity in both the Sun and low mass stars. Utilising high cadence, Hα observations of a filament eruption made using the CRISP spectropolarimeter mounted on the Swedish Solar Telescope has allowed us to determine 3D velocity maps of the event. To gain insight into the physical mechanism which drives the event we have qualitatively compared our observation to a 3D MHD reconnection model. Solar-type and low mass stars can be highly active producing flares with energies exceeding erg. Using K2 and TESS data we find no correlation between the number of flares and the rotation phase which is surprising. Our solar flare model can be used to aid our understanding of the origin of flares in other stars. By scaling up our solar model to replicate observed stellar flare energies, we investigate the conditions needed for such high energy flares
Spatiotemporal communication with synchronized optical chaos
We propose a model system that allows communication of spatiotemporal
information using an optical chaotic carrier waveform. The system is based on
broad-area nonlinear optical ring cavities, which exhibit spatiotemporal chaos
in a wide parameter range. Message recovery is possible through chaotic
synchronization between transmitter and receiver. Numerical simulations
demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, and the benefit of the
parallelism of information transfer with optical wavefronts.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
