    Change point detection in social networksCritical review with experiments

    © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Change point detection in social networks is an important element in developing the understanding of dynamic systems. This complex and growing area of research has no clear guidelines on what methods to use or in which circumstances. This paper critically discusses several possible network metrics to be used for a change point detection problem and conducts an experimental, comparative analysis using the Enron and MIT networks. Bayesian change point detection analysis is conducted on different global graph metrics (Size, Density, Average Clustering Coefficient, Average Shortest Path) as well as metrics derived from the Hierarchical and Block models (Entropy, Edge Probability, No. of Communities, Hierarchy Level Membership). The results produced the posterior probability of a change point at weekly time intervals that were analysed against ground truth change points using precision and recall measures. Results suggest that computationally heavy generative models offer only slightly better results compared to some of the global graph metrics. The simplest metrics used in the experiments, i.e. nodes and links numbers, are the recommended choice for detecting overall structural changes

    Climate reconstruction from Barrow Island, Western Australia

    Barrow Island ( 20.7°S) is ideally situated to register the first coastal occupations in Australia as well as peoples' responses to major changes in sea level, climate and eventual isolation from critical resources on the mainland. Its location in the arid region between monsoonal and extratropical rainfall belts also imply that Barrow Island may have experienced dramatic changes in precipitation over the period of human occupation. Boodie cave has been the focus of Barrow Island Archeological Project and records a rich record of human occupation. Also present at Boodie cave are significant quantities of water-lain cave carbonates (flowstones, stalactites, and stalagmites). Active (modern) deposition of such carbonates is limited to very small encrustations and consists primarily of stalactites that are less than 5 cm in diameter. This situation indicates that deposition of significant carbonates is indicative of wetter conditions at Barrow Island and dating of these carbonates using the U/Th method provides a record of wet intervals at Barrow Island over the last 120 thousand years. In addition to ages from flowstones, three complete speleothems were collected Ledge Cave for climatic reconstruction using stable isotopes. Ledge cave is large subterranean with high relative humidity (>98%) and abundant, but largely inactive speleothems. The wettest interval in our cave carbonate record predates stratigraphic units with cultural material, but indicates that wet intervals on Barrow Island were broadly coincidental with lake expansions on the Australian mainland. In particular, a very wet interval between 120 and 90 ka is recorded in two of the Ledge Cave speleothems. The Barrow Island speleothem record suggests that displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the strength of the Indo-Australian monsoon may have been the most important influence on water balance at Barrow Island. Continued development of these climate archives will offer insights into climate that is directly applicable to the unique human occupation record also preserved at this site

    Determining the electrochemical transport parameters of sodium-ions in hard carbon composite electrodes

    Sodium-ion batteries offer advantages over conventional Li-ion batteries, including cost and safety. However, much less is known about their operation and performance properties, particularly at the anode. The electron and ion transport in the active materials and composite electrode significantly impact battery performance. Understanding the changes in transport properties as a function of state-of-charge and state-of-health is essential for effective electrode design and performance assessment. In this work, the resistivity and diffusivity of sodium transport in hard carbon composite electrodes are studied at different states-of-health, using Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique (GITT), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and Electrochemical Potential Spectroscopy (EPS) in a stable 3-electrode test cell configuration. The reference electrode eliminated some voltage errors arising from the overpotentials on the counter electrode. The resistance contributions from the surface electrolyte interface, electrolyte transport in the electrode pores, and the charge transfer resistance are extrapolated from the impedance measurements and the diffusion coefficient from the GITT and EPS. The different techniques indicate similar trends in the diffusion coefficient during sodiation, desodiation, and ageing, although different orders of magnitude were observed between the EPS and GITT data. The accuracy of the parameters calculated using the different electrochemical techniques is discussed in detail

    Observation of a Turbulence-Induced Large Scale Magnetic Field

    An axisymmetric magnetic field is applied to a spherical, turbulent flow of liquid sodium. An induced magnetic dipole moment is measured which cannot be generated by the interaction of the axisymmetric mean flow with the applied field, indicating the presence of a turbulent electromotive force. It is shown that the induced dipole moment should vanish for any axisymmetric laminar flow. Also observed is the production of toroidal magnetic field from applied poloidal magnetic field (the omega-effect).     Intermittent magnetic field excitation by a turbulent flow of liquid sodium

    The magnetic field measured in the Madison Dynamo Experiment shows intermittent periods of growth when an axial magnetic field is applied. The geometry of the intermittent field is consistent with the fastest growing magnetic eigenmode predicted by kinematic dynamo theory using a laminar model of the mean flow. Though the eigenmodes of the mean flow are decaying, it is postulated that turbulent fluctuations of the velocity field change the flow geometry such that the eigenmode growth rate is temporarily positive. Therefore, it is expected that a characteristic of the onset of a turbulent dynamo is magnetic intermittency.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

    Mesoarchean partial melting of mafic crust and tonalite production during high-T–low-P stagnant tectonism, Akia Terrane, West Greenland

NJG acknowledges support from Australian Research Council grant FL160100168.Different geodynamic models exist for the growth and differentiation of Archean continental crust, ranging from horizontal tectonics with subduction zones to vertical tectonics with foundering of greenstone sequences. U–Pb zircon geochronology, field relationships, and pressure–temperature constraints from granulite-facies metabasite of the Akia Terrane of the North Atlantic Craton in West Greenland show that this terrane grew through two major magmatic growth episodes: an earlier one at c. 3.2 Ga, and a later one at c. 3.05–2.97 Ga. Phase equilibrium modelling for assemblages related to the latter indicates temperatures of >800 °C at 0.8 GPa in the stability field of garnet. U–Pb zircon geochronology and existing Hf isotope data are also consistent with a model involving protracted Mesoarchean magmatic growth with limited mantle addition during a prolonged period of high temperatures in a relatively stagnant tectonic regime prior to Neoarchean compressional tectonism in the Akia Terrane.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Hyperfine structure of the A1Π\mathbf{A^{1}\Pi} state of AlCl and its relevance to laser cooling and trapping

    The majority of molecules proposed for laser cooling and trapping experiments have Σ\Sigma-type ground states. Specifically, 2Σ^2\Sigma states have cycling transitions analogous to D1-lines in alkali-metal atoms while 1Σ^1\Sigma states offer both strong and weak cycling transitions analogous to those in alkaline-earth atoms. Despite this proposed variety, to date, only molecules with 2Σ^2\Sigma-type ground states have successfully been confined and cooled in magneto-optical traps. While none of the proposed 1Σ^1\Sigma-type molecules have been successfully laser cooled and trapped, they are expected to have various advantages in terms of exhibiting a lower chemical reactivity and an internal structure that benefits the cooling schemes. Here, we present the prospects and strategies for optical cycling in AlCl -- a 1Σ^1\Sigma molecule -- and report on the characterization of the A1ΠA^{1}\Pi state hyperfine structure. Based on these results, we carry out detailed simulations on the expected capture velocity of a magneto-optical trap for AlCl. Finally, using {\it ab initio} calculations, we identify the photodissociation via a 31Π3^1\Pi state and photoionization process via the 31Σ+3^1\Sigma^+ state as possible loss mechanisms for a magneto-optical trap of AlCl.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

    Infrared spectroscopy of phytochrome and model pigments

    Fourier-transform infrared difference spectra between the red-absorbing and far-red-absorbing forms of oat phytochrome have been measured in H2O and 2H2O. The difference spectra are compared with infrared spectra of model compounds, i.e. the (5Z,10Z,15Z)- and (5Z,10Z,15E)-isomers of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-bilindion (Et8-bilindion), 2,3-dihydro-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethyl-bilindion (H2Et8-bilindion), and protonated H2Et8-bilindion in various solvents. The spectra of the model compounds show that only for the protonated forms can clear differences between the two isomers be detected. Since considerable differences are present between the spectra of Et8-bilindion and H2Et8-bilindion, it is concluded that only the latter compound can serve as a model system of phytochrome. The 2H2O effect on the difference spectrum of phytochrome supports the view that the chromophore in red-absorbing phytochrome is protonated and suggests, in addition, that it is also protonated in far-red-absorbing phytochrome. The spectra show that protonated carboxyl groups are influenced. The small amplitudes in the difference spectra exclude major changes of protein secondary structure

    Hedgehog pathway dysregulation contributes to the pathogenesis of human gastrointestinal stromal tumors via GLI-mediated activation of KIT expression.

    Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) arise within the interstitial cell of Cajal (ICC) lineage due to activating KIT/PDGFRA mutations. Both ICC and GIST possess primary cilia (PC), which coordinate PDGFRA and Hedgehog signaling, regulators of gastrointestinal mesenchymal development. Therefore, we hypothesized that Hedgehog signaling may be altered in human GIST and controls KIT expression. Quantitative RT-PCR, microarrays, and next generation sequencing were used to describe Hedgehog/PC-related genes in purified human ICC and GIST. Genetic and pharmacologic approaches were employed to investigate the effects of GLI manipulation on KIT expression and GIST cell viability. We report that Hedgehog pathway and PC components are expressed in ICC and GIST and subject to dysregulation during GIST oncogenesis, irrespective of KIT/PDGFRA mutation status. Using genomic profiling, 10.2% of 186 GIST studied had potentially deleterious genomic alterations in 5 Hedgehog-related genes analyzed, including in the PTCH1 tumor suppressor (1.6%). Expression of the predominantly repressive GLI isoform, GLI3, was inversely correlated with KIT mRNA levels in GIST cells and non-KIT/non-PDGFRA mutant GIST. Overexpression of the 83-kDa repressive form of GLI3 or small interfering RNA-mediated knockdown of the activating isoforms GLI1/2 reduced KIT mRNA. Treatment with GLI1/2 inhibitors, including arsenic trioxide, significantly increased GLI3 binding to the KIT promoter, decreased KIT expression, and reduced viability in imatinib-sensitive and imatinib-resistant GIST cells. These data offer new evidence that genes necessary for Hedgehog signaling and PC function in ICC are dysregulated in GIST. Hedgehog signaling activates KIT expression irrespective of mutation status, offering a novel approach to treat imatinib-resistant GIST

    Local stochastic non-Gaussianity and N-body simulations

    Large-scale clustering of highly biased tracers of large-scale structure has emerged as one of the best observational probes of primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type (i.e. f_{NL}^{local}). This type of non-Gaussianity can be generated in multifield models of inflation such as the curvaton model. Recently, Tseliakhovich, Hirata, and Slosar showed that the clustering statistics depend qualitatively on the ratio of inflaton to curvaton power \xi after reheating, a free parameter of the model. If \xi is significantly different from zero, so that the inflaton makes a non-negligible contribution to the primordial adiabatic curvature, then the peak-background split ansatz predicts that the halo bias will be stochastic on large scales. In this paper, we test this prediction in N-body simulations. We find that large-scale stochasticity is generated, in qualitative agreement with the prediction, but that the level of stochasticity is overpredicted by ~30%. Other predictions, such as \xi independence of the halo bias, are confirmed by the simulations. Surprisingly, even in the Gaussian case we do not find that halo model predictions for stochasticity agree consistently with simulations, suggesting that semi-analytic modeling of stochasticity is generally more difficult than modeling halo bias.Comment: v3: minor changes matching published versio
