Programmable rate modem utilizing digital signal processing techniques

    Get PDF
The engineering development study to follow was written to address the need for a Programmable Rate Digital Satellite Modem capable of supporting both burst and continuous transmission modes with either binary phase shift keying (BPSK) or quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation. The preferred implementation technique is an all digital one which utilizes as much digital signal processing (DSP) as possible. Here design tradeoffs in each portion of the modulator and demodulator subsystem are outlined, and viable circuit approaches which are easily repeatable, have low implementation losses and have low production costs are identified. The research involved for this study was divided into nine technical papers, each addressing a significant region of concern in a variable rate modem design. Trivial portions and basic support logic designs surrounding the nine major modem blocks were omitted. In brief, the nine topic areas were: (1) Transmit Data Filtering; (2) Transmit Clock Generation; (3) Carrier Synthesizer; (4) Receive AGC; (5) Receive Data Filtering; (6) RF Oscillator Phase Noise; (7) Receive Carrier Selectivity; (8) Carrier Recovery; and (9) Timing Recovery

Long, paired A'A/Pahoehoe flows of Mauna Loa: Volcanological significance and insights they provide into volcano plumbing systems

    Get PDF
The long lava flows of Mauna Loa, Hawaii have been cited as Earth's closed analogs to the large Martian flows. It is therefore important to understand the flow mechanics and characteristics of the Mauna Loa flows and to make use of these in an attempt to gain insights into Martian eruptive processes. Two fundamentally different kinds of long lava flows can be distinguished on Hawaiian volcanoes as in Martian flows. The two kinds may have identical initial viscosities, chemical compositions, flow lengths, and flow volumes, but their flow mechanisms and thermal energy budgets are radically different. One travels a distance set by the discharge rate as envisaged by Walker and Wadge, and the other travels a distance set mainly by the eruption duration and ground slope. In the Mauna Loa lavas, yield strength becomes an important flow morphology control only in the distal part of a'a lavas. The occurrence of paired flows on Mauna Loa yields insights into the internal plumbing systems of the volcano, and it is significant that all of the volume of the a'a flow must be stored in a magma chamber before eruption, while none of the volume of the pahoehoe needs to be so stored. Differentiation between the two kinds of flows on images of Martian volcanoes is possible and hence an improved understanding of these huge structures is acquired

Effects of atomic short-range order on the properties of perovskite alloys in their morphotropic phase boundary

The effects of atomic short-range order on the properties of Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_x)O_3 alloy in its morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) are predicted by combining first-principles-based methods and annealing techniques. Clustering is found to lead to a compositional expansion of this boundary, while the association of unlike atoms yields a contraction of this region. Atomic short-range order can thus drastically affect properties of perovskite alloys in their MPB, by inducing phase transitions. Microscopic mechanisms responsible for these effects are revealed and discussed.Comment: 4 pages, with 2 postscript figures embedded. Uses REVTEX4 and graphicx macro

High effectiveness contour matching contact heat exchanger

    Get PDF
There is a need in the art for a heat exchanger design having a flexible core providing contour matching capabilities, which compensates for manufacturing tolerance and distortion buildups, and which accordingly furnishes a relatively uniform thermal contact conductance between the core and external heat sources under essentially all operating conditions. The core of the heat exchanger comprises a top plate and a bottom plate, each having alternate rows of pins attached. Each of the pins fits into corresponding tight-fitting recesses in the opposite plate

Relations between depressed mood and vocal parameters before, during and after sleep deprivation: a circadian rhythm study

    Get PDF
The mechanism underlying improvement after total sleep deprivation (TSD) was studied in 14 major depressed patients. The suggestions that (1) circadian processes and/or (2) dimensions of arousal may play a role in the response to TSD were investigated. Diurnal variation of depressed mood and of mood- and arousal-related vocal parameters was studied in relation to the effect of TSD on depressed mood and vocal parameters. During 3 baseline days, during TSD and 2 days after TSD vocal parameters and depressed mood were assessed 6 and 3 times daily respectively. The mean fundamental frequency (frequency of vocal fold vibration, F0) (presumably reflecting aspects of arousal) as well as the range of the F0 (proposed to reflect sadness) showed a clear circadian pattern with a peak at about 4.00 p.m. TSD affected the circadian organization of the mean F0 and advanced the peak of the curve. After one night of subsequent sleep this effect disappeared. In addition, improvement after TSD coincided with an increase of the mean F0. The diurnal variation of mood before TSD predicted the mood response to TSD, whereas diurnal variation of vocal parameters did not. Moreover, circadian changes in vocal parameters were not related to changes in depressed mood. These findings suggest that the diurnal variations in mood and vocal parameters are regulated by different mechanisms. Data support the presumption that circadian as well as arousal processes are involved in the mood response to TSD. Circadian changes in vocal parameters due to TSD are not likely to reflect changes in the biological clock.

Search for IR Emission from Intracluster Dust in A2029

We have searched for IR emission from the intracluster dust (ICD) in the galaxy cluster A2029. Weak signals of enhanced extended emission in the cluster are detected at both 24 and 70 micron. However, the signals are indistinguishable from the foreground fluctuations. The 24 versus 70 micron color map does not discriminate the dust emission in the cluster from the cirrus emission. After excluding the contamination from the point sources, we obtain upper limits for the extended ICD emission in A2029, 5 x 10^3 Jy/sr at 24 micron and 5 x 10^4 Jy/sr at 70 micron. The upper limits are generally consistent with the expectation from theoretical calculations and support a dust deficiency in the cluster compared to the ISM in our galaxy. Our results suggest that even with the much improved sensitivity of current IR telescopes, a clear detection of the IR emission from ICD may be difficult due to cirrus noise.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ

Destructive Hostility: The Jeffrey Dahmer Case: A Psychiatric and Forensic Study of a Serial Killer

    Get PDF
We were involved as forensic experts in the case of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. We discuss the scene and victim autopsy findings, with a brief consideration of the basic emotion of hostility. These findings support the thesis that at the basis of this serial killer\u27s behavior were primary unconscious feelings of hate that he had channeled into a sadistic programmed destruction of 17 young men. The interview of the serial killer, the photographic scene documentation, and the autopsy findings stress the ambivalent homosexuality of the killer, his sexual sadism, his obsessive fetishism, and his possible cannibalism and necrophilia
