Origin of spin reorientation transitions in antiferromagnetic MnPt-based alloys
Antiferromagnetic MnPt exhibits a spin reorientation transition (SRT) as a
function of temperature, and off-stoichiometric Mn-Pt alloys also display SRTs
as a function of concentration. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy in these
alloys is studied using first-principles calculations based on the coherent
potential approximation and the disordered local moment method. The anisotropy
is fairly small and sensitive to the variations in composition and temperature
due to the cancellation of large contributions from different parts of the
Brillouin zone. Concentration and temperature-driven SRTs are found in
reasonable agreement with experimental data. Contributions from specific
band-structure features are identified and used to explain the origin of the

Alfven seismic vibrations of crustal solid-state plasma in quaking paramagnetic neutron star
Magneto-solid-mechanical model of two-component, core-crust, paramagnetic
neutron star responding to quake-induced perturbation by differentially
rotational, torsional, oscillations of crustal electron-nuclear solid-state
plasma about axis of magnetic field frozen in the immobile paramagnetic core is
developed. Particular attention is given to the node-free torsional
crust-against-core vibrations under combined action of Lorentz magnetic and
Hooke's elastic forces; the damping is attributed to Newtonian force of shear
viscose stresses in crustal solid-state plasma. The spectral formulae for the
frequency and lifetime of this toroidal mode are derived in analytic form and
discussed in the context of quasi-periodic oscillations of the X-ray outburst
flux from quaking magnetars. The application of obtained theoretical spectra to
modal analysis of available data on frequencies of oscillating outburst
emission suggests that detected variability is the manifestation of crustal
Alfven's seismic vibrations restored by Lorentz force of magnetic field

Heterostructure solar cells
The performance of gallium arsenide solar cells grown on Ge substrates is discussed. In some cases the substrate was thinned to reduce overall cell weight with good ruggedness. The conversion efficiency of 2 by 2 cm cells under AMO reached 17.1 percent with a cell thickness of 6 mils. The work described forms the basis for future cascade cell structures, where similar interconnecting problems between the top cell and the bottom cell must be solved. Applications of the GaAs/Ge solar cell in space and the expected payoffs are discussed
Looking at the Haldane Conjecture from a Grouptheoretical Point of View
Based on the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis construction we present a five parameter
family of Spin-1 Hamiltonians with degenerate groundstate. Starting from the
critical symmetric Hamiltonian, we look for those perturbations of the
symmetry, which leave the groundstate degenerate. We also discuss the

Surface response of spherical core-shell structured nanoparticle by optically induced elastic oscillations of soft shell against hard core
The optically induced oscillatory response of a spherical two-component,
shell-core structured, nanoparticle by nodeless elastic vibrations of soft
peripheral shell against hard and dynamically immobile inner core is
considered. The eigenfrequencies of the even-parity, spheroidal and odd-parity
torsional vibrational modes trapped in the finite-depth shell are obtained
which are of practical interest for modal specification of individual
resonances in spectra of resonant scattering of long wavelength electromagnetic

The influence of risk factors associated with captive rearing on post-release survival in translocated cirl buntings Emberiza cirlus in the UK
Population decline resulting from agricultural intensification led to contraction of the range of the cirl bunting Emberiza cirlus in the UK to a small area of south Devon. As part of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan for the species, a project to re-establish a population in suitable habitat in Cornwall was undertaken during 2006–2011, in which chicks were removed from the nest in Devon, hand-reared and then delayed-released. The survival of the birds to four time points in the year after release was analysed in relation to the effect of rearing factors, using a multivariable logistic regression model. Individuals with higher body weight at capture were more likely to survive to 1 January and 1 May in the year following release, and individuals released in June and July were more likely to survive than those released in August. Individuals released in 2006 and 2011 had a higher survival rate than those released during 2007–2010. Timing of capture, time spent at each stage in captivity, medication and the detection of parasites in the brood had no significant effect. Immunosuppressive disease, weather factors and predator activity may have led to some of the observed differences in survival. This analysis provides evidence with which to plan future translocation projects for cirl buntings and other passerine birds
Gauge Unification and Quark Masses in a Pati-Salam Model from Branes
We investigate the phase space of parameters in the Pati-Salam model derived
in the context of D-branes scenarios, requiring low energy string scale. We
find that a non-supersymmetric version complies with a string scale as low as
10 TeV, while in the supersymmetric version the string scale raises up to ~2 x
10^7 TeV. The limited energy region for RGE running demands a large tan(beta)
in order to have experimentally acceptable masses for the top and bottom
