    Cold atom confinement in an all-optical dark ring trap

    We demonstrate confinement of 85^{85}Rb atoms in a dark, toroidal optical trap. We use a spatial light modulator to convert a single blue-detuned Gaussian laser beam to a superposition of Laguerre-Gaussian modes that forms a ring-shaped intensity null bounded harmonically in all directions. We measure a 1/e spin-relaxation lifetime of ~1.5 seconds for a trap detuning of 4.0 nm. For smaller detunings, a time-dependent relaxation rate is observed. We use these relaxation rate measurements and imaging diagnostics to optimize trap alignment in a programmable manner with the modulator.     Resonant Charge Transfer In Symmetric Alkali-ion Alkali-atom Collisions

    Resonant charge transfer in alkali-ion alkali-atom collisions is investigated by using the molecular-orbital expansion method incorporating the use of electron translation factors. Molecular wave functions and eigen energies are obtained by the pseudopotential method. Molecular properties, Re, De, and e, obtained in the present calculation are in good accord with other recent theoretical results, as well as spectroscopic measurements. Three-state close-coupling calculations reproduce the positions of the maxima and minima in the oscillatory structure seen experimentally in the resonant-charge-transfer cross sections for the Li2 + and Cs2 + systems. The magnitude of the total cross sections and their velocity dependence are in agreement with experimental measurements. © 1986 The American Physical Society

    Terpenes and Carbohydrate Source Influence Rumen Fermentation, Digestibility, Intake, and Preference in Sheep

    We hypothesized that toxins and nutrients in foods interact to influence foraging behavior by herbivores. Based on this hypothesis we predicted that 1) terpenes in big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) influence intake and preference in sheep for diets varying in sources of nonstructural (barley grain) and structural (sugar beet pulp) carbohydrates, and 2) these effects are due to the differential effects of terpenes on fermentation products and apparent digestibility of each class of carbohydrates. Lambs were fed 2 isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets with varying proportions of the same ingredients (beet pulp- and barley grain-based diet) or offered a choice between the 2 diets; all feeds were fed without and with terpenes, in consecutive periods. We also compared intake and preference of the beet pulp- and barley-based diets before and after the lambs ate a meal of sagebrush. Finally, we assessed the effect of terpenes on ruminal variables and in vivo digestibility. Lambs ate less when fed beet pulp or when they were offered a choice of diets with terpenes (P \u3c 0.001), and intake of the beet pulp-based diet was the most affected (P \u3c 0.05). Lambs preferred the beet pulp- to the grain-based diet with terpenes, but their preference reversed when terpenes were removed from the diets (P \u3c 0.05). When lambs were offered both diets, intake and preference did not differ (P \u3e 0.20) before eating sagebrush, but they preferred the beet pulp-based diet after eating sagebrush (P \u3c 0.05). Intake of sagebrush did not differ among groups consuming the test diets (P = 0.21). Addition of terpenes to both diets increased the digestibility of DM, NDF, and ADF and decreased concentrations of total VFA and acetate (P \u3c 0.05). Terpenes also depressed butyrate concentration in the barley-based diet (P \u3c 0.05). Propionate concentrations were not affected by terpenes in either feed (P = 0.63). In summary, the predominant type of feed ingredient (beet pulp, grain) ingested with terpenes influenced fermentation products, intake, and preference in lambs. The source of energy from supplements, or other plants in the diet, is likely to influence intake and preference for sagebrush in sheep foraging on rangelands. Moreover, ingesting terpenes from sagebrush may also influence intake and preference for other plant species or supplements

    Direct observation of particle-hole mixing in the superconducting state by angle-resolved photoemission

    Particle-hole (p-h) mixing is a fundamental consequence of the existence of a pair condensate. We present direct experimental evidence for p-h mixing in the angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectra in the superconducting state of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}. In addition to its pedagogical importance, this establishes unambiguously that the gap observed in ARPES is associated with superconductivity.Comment: 3 pages, revtex, 4 postscript figure

    Comparative analysis of Wnt expression identifies a highly conserved developmental transition in flatworms

    Background: Early developmental patterns of flatworms are extremely diverse and difficult to compare between distant groups. In parasitic flatworms, such as tapeworms, this is confounded by highly derived life cycles involving indirect development, and even the true orientation of the tapeworm antero-posterior (AP) axis has been a matter of controversy. In planarians, and metazoans generally, the AP axis is specified by the canonical Wnt pathway, and we hypothesized that it could also underpin axial formation during larval metamorphosis in tapeworms. Results: By comparative gene expression analysis of Wnt components and conserved AP markers in the tapeworms Echinococcus multilocularis and Hymenolepis microstoma, we found remarkable similarities between the early stages of larval metamorphosis in tapeworms and late embryonic and adult development in planarians. We demonstrate posterior expression of specific Wnt factors during larval metamorphosis and show that scolex formation is preceded by localized expression of Wnt inhibitors. In the highly derived larval form of E. multilocularis, which proliferates asexually within the mammalian host, we found ubiquitous expression of posterior Wnt factors combined with localized expression of Wnt inhibitors that correlates with the asexual budding of scoleces. As in planarians, muscle cells are shown to be a source of secreted Wnt ligands, providing an explanation for the retention of a muscle layer in the immotile E. multilocularis larva. Conclusions: The strong conservation of gene expression between larval metamorphosis in tapeworms and late embryonic development in planarians suggests, for the first time, a homologous developmental period across this diverse phylum. We postulate these to represent the phylotypic stages of these flatworm groups. Our results support the classical notion that the scolex is the true anterior end of tapeworms. Furthermore, the up-regulation of Wnt inhibitors during the specification of multiple anterior poles suggests a mechanism for the unique asexual reproduction of E. multilocularis larvae

    Intercomparison of ground-based ozone and NO2 measurements during the MANTRA 2004 campaign

    The MANTRA (Middle Atmosphere Nitrogen TRend Assessment) 2004 campaign took place in Vanscoy, Saskatchewan, Canada (52° N, 107° W) from 3 August to 15 September, 2004. In support of the main balloon launch, a suite of five zenith-sky and direct-Sun-viewing UV-visible ground-based spectrometers was deployed, primarily measuring ozone and NO2 total columns. Three Fourier transform spectrometers (FTSs) that were part of the balloon payload also performed ground-based measurements of several species, including ozone. Ground-based measurements of ozone and NO2 differential slant column densities from the zenith-viewing UV-visible instruments are presented herein. They are found to partially agree within NDACC (Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change) standards for instruments certified for process studies and satellite validation. Vertical column densities of ozone from the zenith-sky UV-visible instruments, the FTSs, a Brewer spectrophotometer, and ozonesondes are compared, and found to agree within the combined error estimates of the instruments (15%). NO2 vertical column densities from two of the UV-visible instruments are compared, and are also found to agree within combined error (15%)

    Simulations of Astrophysical Fluid Instabilities

    We present direct numerical simulations of mixing at Rayleigh-Taylor unstable interfaces performed with the FLASH code, developed at the ASCI/Alliances Center for Astrophysical Thermonuclear Flashes at the University of Chicago. We present initial results of single-mode studies in two and three dimensions. Our results indicate that three-dimensional instabilities grow significantly faster than two-dimensional instabilities and that grid resolution can have a significant effect on instability growth rates. We also find that unphysical diffusive mixing occurs at the fluid interface, particularly in poorly resolved simulations.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure.     Formation of cosmological mass condensation within a FRW universe: exact general relativistic solutions

    Within the framework of an exact general relativistic formulation of gluing manifolds, we consider the problem of matching an inhomogeneous overdense region to a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background universe in the general spherical symmetric case of pressure-free models. It is shown that, in general, the matching is only possible through a thin shell, a fact ignored in the literature. In addition to this, in subhorizon cases where the matching is possible, an intermediate underdense region will necessarily arise.Comment: 6 page

    Moving Wigner Glasses and Smectics: Dynamics of Disordered Wigner Crystals

    We examine the dynamics of driven classical Wigner solids interacting with quenched disorder from charged impurities. For strong disorder, the initial motion is plastic -- in the form of crossing winding channels. For increasing drive, the disordered Wigner glass can reorder to a moving Wigner smectic -- with the electrons moving in non-crossing 1D channels. These different dynamic phases can be related to the conduction noise and I(V) curves. For strong disorder, we show criticality in the voltage onset just above depinning. We also obtain the dynamic phase diagram for driven Wigner solids and prove that there is a finite threshold for transverse sliding, recently found experimentally.Comment: 4 pages, 4 postscript figure
