Real time animation of space plasma phenomena
In pursuit of real time animation of computer simulated space plasma phenomena, the code was rewritten for the Massively Parallel Processor (MPP). The program creates a dynamic representation of the global bowshock which is based on actual spacecraft data and designed for three dimensional graphic output. This output consists of time slice sequences which make up the frames of the animation. With the MPP, 16384, 512 or 4 frames can be calculated simultaneously depending upon which characteristic is being computed. The run time was greatly reduced which promotes the rapid sequence of images and makes real time animation a foreseeable goal. The addition of more complex phenomenology in the constructed computer images is now possible and work proceeds to generate these images
Analysis of Skylab 2 S193 scatterometer data
SKYLAB II S193 Scatterometer data for the passes of June 5, 1973, over the Gulf of Mexico and June 6, 1973, over Pacific Hurricane AVA were analyzed. The S193 scatterometer measured the radar cross section of the ocean at 13.9 GHz (Ku-band) as a function of incidence angle. The fields-of-view of the scatterometer were known. In the absence of a large body of Ku-band ocean radar data, the results of the NRL experiments at X-band (8.9 GHz) were used for comparison. The S193 data of June 5, 1973, when a practically uniform wind field was present, show reasonable agreement with the NRL empirical and theoretical models

Enhancing Small Group Teaching in Plant Sciences: A Research and Development Project in Higher Education
The Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge uses a range of learning and teaching environments including lectures, practical laboratories and small group tutorials'. Under the auspices of the Cambridge-MIT Institute's Pedagogy Programme, a two-year research and development project concerned with the development of small-group teaching is being undertaken. The research element of this project endeavours to illuminate current practice and identify areas in which evidence-based development might take place. The development element will include professional development activities and the production of curriculum resources including appropriate online material. This is a multi-method study including a series of student questionnaires; focus groups of students; semi-structured interviews with staff members; and the collection of video of small group teaching. In this paper we report selected findings from the 'student data' of the first year of this project.The questionnaire, conducted with two cohorts of students (2nd and 3rd year Undergraduates), used a double-scale questionnaire in which students were asked to report both on the prevalence of a range of teaching and learning practices and on how valuable these were in supporting their learning. This type of questionnaire instrument is particularly appropriate because the data it generates is suggestive of areas for changes in practice. The gaps between 'practices' and 'values' (across both cohorts) suggested that students valued activities which improved their understanding of how elements of the course were interrelated; which related course content to 'authentic' examples; and those in which teachers made explicit the characteristics of 'high quality' student work. Small group teaching, in the view of most students, was best used to extend and explore concepts introduced in lectures rather than simply reinforcing them or assessing student understanding.Data gathered through focus group activities illuminated the questionnaire data, providing detailed accounts of how students managed their own learning, and the roles played in this by lectures, small group teaching and other resources. Students identified the processes of planning and writing essays as key learning activities during which they integrated diverse course content and reflected on problematic knowledge. Questionnaire and focus group data suggested that students had less clear views regarding the value of collaborative learning, peer-assessment or activities such as making presentations to other students. When students talked in positive terms about these activities, they often referred to the learning benefits of preparation for the tasks rather than of the collaborative activities themselves. These views may provide indications of potential barriers to changes in learning and teaching environments, and suggest that any such changes may have to be carefully justified to students in terms of benefits to their own learning. Many of our findings are broadly in accord with other work on teaching and learning in Higher Education settings (such as the 'Oxford Learning Context Project' and the 'Enhancing Teaching-Learning Environments in Undergraduate Courses' Project) in that 'deep learning' and 'authenticity' in learning activities are valued by students, and that the introduction of specific formative practices (such as sharing notions of 'quality') would be welcomed. At the same time, amongst the students in our sample, a view of learning as an individual process of 'learning-as-acquisition' predominates over a view that it is a social process of 'learning-as-participation', and this will inform the planning of the 'development' aspect of the project. We conclude with a discussion of how the approach we have used might be more widely applied both within and beyond the Cambridge-MIT partnership. We also identify potential affordances of, and barriers to, the development of research-informed teaching in Higher Education
Zeeman tomography of magnetic white dwarfs. III, The 70–80 Megagauss magnetic field of PG 1015+014
Aims. We analyse the magnetic field geometry of the magnetic DA white dwarf PG 1015+014 with our Zeeman tomography method.
Methods. This study is based on rotation-phase resolved optical flux and circular polarization spectra of PG 1015+014 obtained with FORS1
at the ESO VLT. Our tomographic code makes use of an extensive database of pre-computed Zeeman spectra. The general approach has been described in Papers I and II of this series.
Results. The surface field strength distributions for all rotational phases of PG 1015+014 are characterised by a strong peak at 70 MG. A separate peak at 80 MG is seen for about one third of the rotation cycle. Significant contributions to the Zeeman features arise from regions
with field strengths between 50 and 90 MG. We obtain equally good simultaneous fits to the observations, collected in five phase bins, for two different field parametrizations: (i) a superposition of individually tilted and off-centred zonal multipole components; and (ii) a truncated multipole expansion up to degree l = 4 including all zonal and tesseral components. The magnetic fields generated by both parametrizations exhibit a similar global structure of the absolute surface field values, but differ considerably in the topology of the field lines. An effective photospheric temperature of T eff = 10 000 ± 1000 K was found.
Conclusions. Remaining discrepancies between the observations and our best-fit models suggest that additional small-scale structure of the magnetic field exists which our field models are unable to cover due to the restricted number of free parameters
Zeeman tomography of magnetic white dwarfs. IV, The complex field structure of the polars EF Eridani, BL Hydri and CP Tucanae
Context. The magnetic fields of the accreting white dwarfs in magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) determine the accretion geometries, the emission properties, and the secular evolution of these objects.
Aims. We determine the structure of the surface magnetic fields of the white dwarf primaries in magnetic CVs using Zeeman tomography.
Methods. Our study is based on orbital-phase resolved optical flux and circular polarization spectra of the polars EF Eri, BL Hyi, and CP Tuc obtained with FORS1 at the ESO VLT. An evolutionary algorithm is used to synthesize best fits to these spectra from an
extensive database of pre-computed Zeeman spectra. The general approach has been described in previous papers of this series.
Results. The results achieved with simple geometries as centered or offset dipoles are not satisfactory. Significantly improved fits are obtained for multipole expansions that are truncated at degree lmax = 3 or 5 and include all tesseral and sectoral components with
0 ≤ m ≤ l. The most frequent field strengths of 13, 18, and 10MG for EF Eri, BL Hyi, and CP Tuc, and the ranges of field strength covered are similar for the dipole and multipole models, but only the latter provide access to accreting matter at the right locations on the white dwarf. The results suggest that the field geometries of the white dwarfs in short-period mCVs are quite complex, with
strong contributions from multipoles higher than the dipole in spite of a typical age of the white dwarfs in CVs in excess of 1 Gyr.
Conclusions. It is feasible to derive the surface field structure of an accreting white dwarf from phase-resolved low-state circular spectropolarimetry of sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio. The fact that independent information is available on the strength and
direction of the field in the accretion spot from high-state observations helps in unraveling the global field structure
Maps for Lorentz transformations of spin
Lorentz transformations of spin density matrices for a particle with positive
mass and spin 1/2 are described by maps of the kind used in open quantum
dynamics. They show how the Lorentz transformations of the spin depend on the
momentum. Since the spin and momentum generally are entangled, the maps
generally are not completely positive and act in limited domains. States with
two momentum values are considered, so the maps are for the spin qubit
entangled with the qubit made from the two momentum values, and results from
the open quantum dynamics of two coupled qubits can be applied. Inverse maps
are used to show that every Lorentz transformation completely removes the spin
polarization, and so completely removes the information, from a number of spin
density matrices. The size of the spin polarization that is removed is

Affine maps of density matrices
For quantum systems described by finite matrices, linear and affine maps of
matrices are shown to provide equivalent descriptions of evolution of density
matrices for a subsystem caused by unitary Hamiltonian evolution in a larger
system; an affine map can be replaced by a linear map, and a linear map can be
replaced by an affine map. There may be significant advantage in using an
affine map. The linear map is generally not completely positive, but the linear
part of an equivalent affine map can be chosen to be completely positive and
related in the simplest possible way to the unitary Hamiltonian evolution in

(Never) Mind your p's and q's: Von Neumann versus Jordan on the Foundations of Quantum Theory
In two papers entitled "On a new foundation [Neue Begr\"undung] of quantum
mechanics," Pascual Jordan (1927b,g) presented his version of what came to be
known as the Dirac-Jordan statistical transformation theory. As an alternative
that avoids the mathematical difficulties facing the approach of Jordan and
Paul A. M. Dirac (1927), John von Neumann (1927a) developed the modern Hilbert
space formalism of quantum mechanics. In this paper, we focus on Jordan and von
Neumann. Central to the formalisms of both are expressions for conditional
probabilities of finding some value for one quantity given the value of
another. Beyond that Jordan and von Neumann had very different views about the
appropriate formulation of problems in quantum mechanics. For Jordan, unable to
let go of the analogy to classical mechanics, the solution of such problems
required the identication of sets of canonically conjugate variables, i.e., p's
and q's. For von Neumann, not constrained by the analogy to classical
mechanics, it required only the identication of a maximal set of commuting
operators with simultaneous eigenstates. He had no need for p's and q's. Jordan
and von Neumann also stated the characteristic new rules for probabilities in
quantum mechanics somewhat differently. Jordan (1927b) was the first to state
those rules in full generality. Von Neumann (1927a) rephrased them and, in a
subsequent paper (von Neumann, 1927b), sought to derive them from more basic
considerations. In this paper we reconstruct the central arguments of these
1927 papers by Jordan and von Neumann and of a paper on Jordan's approach by
Hilbert, von Neumann, and Nordheim (1928). We highlight those elements in these
papers that bring out the gradual loosening of the ties between the new quantum
formalism and classical mechanics.Comment: New version. The main difference with the old version is that the
