Avoiding the polarization catastrophe in LaAlO3 overlayers on SrTiO3(001) through a polar distortion
A pronounced uniform polar distortion extending over several unit cells
enables thin LaAlO3 overlayers on SrTiO3(001) to counteract the charge dipole
and thereby neutralize the "polarization catastrophe" that is suggested by
simple ion-counting. This unanticipated mechanism, obtained from density
functional theory calculations, allows several unit cells of the LaAlO3
overlayer to remain insulating (hence, fully ionic). The band gap of the
system, defined by occupied O states at the surface and unoccupied Ti 3d
states at the interface in some cases 20 \AA distant, decreases with
increasing thickness of the LaAlO3-film before an insulator-to-metal transition
and a crossover to an electronic reconstruction occurs at around five

Persistent, symptomless, systemic, and seed-borne infection of lettuce by Botrytis cinerea
Experiments are presented which show that Botrytis cinerea, the cause of gray mould disease, is often present in symptomless lettuce plants as a systemic, endophytic, infection which may arise from seed. The fungus was isolated on selective media from surface sterilized sections of roots, stem pieces and leaf discs from symptomless plants grown in a conventional glasshouse and in a spore-free air-flow provided by an isolation propagator. The presence of B. cinerea was confirmed by immuno-labelling the tissues with the Botrytis-specific monoclonal antibody BC-12.CA4. As plants grew, infection spread from the roots to stems and leaves. Surface sterilization of seeds reduced the number of infected symptomless plants. Artificial infection of seedlings with dry conidia increased the rate of infection in some experiments. Selected isolates were genetically finger-printed using microsatellite loci. This confirmed systemic spread of the inoculating isolates but showed that other isolates were also present and that single plants hosted multiple isolates. This shows that B. cinerea commonly grows in lettuce plants as an endophyte, as has already been shown for Primula. If true for other hosts, the endophytic phase may be as important a component of the species population as the aggressive necrotrophic phase
Raising the Dead: Clues to Type Ia Supernova Physics from the Remnant 0509-67.5
We present Chandra X-ray observations of the young supernova remnant (SNR)
0509-67.5 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), believed to be the product of a
Type Ia supernova (SN Ia). The remnant is very round in shape, with a distinct
clumpy shell-like structure. Our Chandra data reveal the remnant to be rich in
silicon, sulfur, and iron. The yields of our fits to the global spectrum
confirm that 0509-67.5 is the remnant of an SN Ia and show a clear preference
for delayed detonation explosion models for SNe Ia. We study the spectrum of
the single brightest isolated knot in the remnant and find that it is enhanced
in iron by a factor of roughly two relative to the global remnant abundances.
This feature, along with similar knots seen in Tycho's SNR, argues for the
presence of modest small-scale composition inhomogeneities in SNe Ia. The
presence of both Si and Fe, with abundance ratios that vary from knot to knot,
indicates that these came from the transition region between the Si- and
Fe-rich zones in the exploded star, possibly as a result of energy input to the
ejecta at late times due to the radioactive decay of 56Ni and 56Co. Two cases
for the continuum emission from the global spectrum were modeled: one where the
continuum is dominated by hydrogen thermal bremsstrahlung radiation; another
where the continuum arises from non-thermal synchrotron radiation. The former
case requires a relatively large value for the ambient density (~1 cm^-3).
Another estimate of the ambient density comes from using the shell structure of
the remnant in the context of dynamical models. This requires a much lower
value for the density (<0.05 cm^-3) which is more consistent with other
evidence known about 0509-67.5. We therefore conclude that the bulk of the

Precision measurement of the 5 2S1/2 - 4 2D5/2 quadrupole transition isotope shift between 88Sr+ and 86Sr+
We have measured the isotope shift of the narrow quadrupole-allowed 5 2S1/2 -
4 2D5/2 transition in 86Sr+ relative to the most abundant isotope 88Sr+. This
was accomplished using high-resolution laser spectroscopy of individual trapped
ions, and the measured shift is Delta-nu_meas^(88,86) = 570.281(4) MHz. We have
also tested a recently developed and successful method for ab-initio
calculation of isotope shifts in alkali-like atomic systems against this
measurement, and our initial result of Delta-nu_calc^(88,86) = 457(28) MHz is
also presented. To our knowledge, this is the first high precision measurement
and calculation of that isotope shift. While the measurement and the
calculation are in broad agreement, there is a clear discrepancy between them,
and we believe that the specific mass shift was underestimated in our
calculation. Our measurement provides a stringent test for further refinements
of theoretical isotope shift calculation methods for atomic systems with a
single valence electron
Prevalence and predictors of postdischarge antibiotic use following mastectomy
OBJECTIVESurvey results suggest that prolonged administration of prophylactic antibiotics is common after mastectomy with reconstruction. We determined utilization, predictors, and outcomes of postdischarge prophylactic antibiotics after mastectomy with or without immediate breast reconstruction.DESIGNRetrospective cohort.PATIENTSCommercially insured women aged 18–64 years coded for mastectomy from January 2004 to December 2011 were included in the study. Women with a preexisting wound complication or septicemia were excluded.METHODSPredictors of prophylactic antibiotics within 5 days after discharge were identified in women with 1 year of prior insurance enrollment; relative risks (RR) were calculated using generalized estimating equations.RESULTSOverall, 12,501 mastectomy procedures were identified; immediate reconstruction was performed in 7,912 of these procedures (63.3%). Postdischarge prophylactic antibiotics were used in 4,439 procedures (56.1%) with immediate reconstruction and 1,053 procedures (22.9%) without immediate reconstruction (P<.001). The antibiotics most commonly prescribed were cephalosporins (75.1%) and fluoroquinolones (11.1%). Independent predictors of postdischarge antibiotics were implant reconstruction (RR, 2.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.23–2.60), autologous reconstruction (RR, 2.17; 95% CI, 1.93–2.45), autologous reconstruction plus implant (RR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.92–2.31), hypertension (RR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.00–1.10), tobacco use (RR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.01–1.14), surgery at an academic hospital (RR, 1.14; 95% CI, 1.07–1.21), and receipt of home health care (RR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.04–1.18). Postdischarge prophylactic antibiotics were not associated with SSI after mastectomy with or without immediate reconstruction (bothP>.05).CONCLUSIONSProphylactic postdischarge antibiotics are commonly prescribed after mastectomy; immediate reconstruction is the strongest predictor. Stewardship efforts in this population to limit continuation of prophylactic antibiotics after discharge are needed to limit antimicrobial resistance.Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol2017;38:1048–1054</jats:sec
3-Dimensional Core-Collapse
In this paper, we present the results of 3-dimensional collapse simulations
of rotating stars for a range of stellar progenitors. We find that for the
fastest spinning stars, rotation does indeed modify the convection above the
proto-neutron star, but it is not fast enough to cause core fragmentation.
Similarly, although strong magnetic fields can be produced once the
proto-neutron star cools and contracts, the proto-neutron star is not spinning
fast enough to generate strong magnetic fields quickly after collapse and, for
our simulations, magnetic fields will not dominate the supernova explosion
mechanism. Even so, the resulting pulsars for our fastest rotating models may
emit enough energy to dominate the total explosion energy of the supernova.
However, more recent stellar models predict rotation rates that are much too
slow to affect the explosion, but these models are not sophisticated enough to
determine whether the most recent, or past, stellar rotation rates are most
likely. Thus, we must rely upon observational constraints to determine the true
rotation rates of stellar cores just before collapse. We conclude with a
discussion of the possible constraints on stellar rotation which we can derive

Suppressing sensorimotor activity modulates the discrimination of auditory emotions but not speaker identity
Our ability to recognize the emotions of others is a crucial feature of human social cognition. Functional neuroimaging studies indicate that activity in sensorimotor cortices is evoked during the perception of emotion. In the visual domain, right somatosensory cortex activity has been shown to be critical for facial emotion recognition. However, the importance of sensorimotor representations in modalities outside of vision remains unknown. Here we use continuous theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (cTBS) to investigate whether neural activity in the right postcentral gyrus (rPoG) and right lateral premotor cortex (rPM) is involved in nonverbal auditory emotion recognition. Three groups of participants completed same-different tasks on auditory stimuli, discriminating between the emotion expressed and the speakers' identities, before and following cTBS targeted at rPoG, rPM, or the vertex (control site). A task-selective deficit in auditory emotion discrimination was observed. Stimulation to rPoG and rPM resulted in a disruption of participants' abilities to discriminate emotion, but not identity, from vocal signals. These findings suggest that sensorimotor activity may be a modality-independent mechanism which aids emotion discrimination. Copyright © 2010 the authors
Precision Determination of the Mass Function of Dark Matter Halos
The predicted mass function of dark matter halos is essential in connecting
observed galaxy cluster counts and models of galaxy clustering to the
properties of the primordial density field. We determine the mass function in
the concordance CDM cosmology, as well as its uncertainty, using
sixteen -particle nested-volume dark-matter simulations, spanning a
mass range of over five orders of magnitude. Using the nested volumes and
single-halo tests, we find and correct for a systematic error in the
friends-of-friends halo-finding algorithm. We find a fitting form and full
error covariance for the mass function that successfully describes the
simulations' mass function and is well-behaved outside the simulations'
resolutions. Estimated forecasts of uncertainty in cosmological parameters from
future cluster count surveys have negligible contribution from remaining
statistical uncertainties in the central cosmology multiplicity function. There
exists a potentially non-negligible cosmological dependence (non-universality)

Magneto-transport characteristics of La1.4Ca1.6Mn2O7 thin film deposited by spray pyrolysis
Polycrystalline thin films of double layer manganite La_1.4Ca_1.6Mn_2O_7
(DLCMO) have been deposited by nebulized spray pyrolysis on single crystal
LaAlO_3 substrates. These single phase films having grain size in the range
70-100 nm exhibit ferromagnetic transition at T_C ~ 107K. The short range
ferromagnetic ordering due to in plane spin coherence is evidenced to occur at
a higher temperature around 225 K. Insulator/semiconductor to metal transition
occurs at a lower temperature T_P ~ 55K. The transport mechanism above T_C is
of Mott`s variable range hopping type. Below T_C the current-voltage
characteristics show non-linear behaviour that becomes stronger with decreasing
temperature. At low temperatures below T_CA ~ 30K a magnetically frustrated
spin canted state is observed. The DLCMO films exhibit resonable low field
magnetoresistance and at 77K the magnetoresistance ratio is ~ 5% at 0.6 kOe and
